Pandora Tour Puerto Rico - Bird Trail at El Portal, El Yunque Rain Forest

**This is a fairly long review - but highly informative!**…read more I booked an El Yunque hike with Pandora a few months ago based on some reviews I had read - and my wife and I are glad that we did! Our driver (and owner of the company) was Eddie. I got a couple of follow up texts and emails from Eddie confirming our pick-up time and a text 20 mins before we were supposed to get picked up...gotta love that follow up! We started out for the hike about 10 mins earlier than expected. We were supplied with water, soda and fruit for the trip. Along the way, we were given a lot of information - current and historical - on the areas we were driving through and the island in general. Once we got there, we watched a video on the rainforest that really tied together the information we had received on the ride in. We then trekked it up the mountain in the van until we hit the trailhead. The hike from the La Mina trail was amazing! So many photo-ops, plus there's a waterfall (wear shoes good for hiking and water of you're going to swim). The trail was mostly down-hill and paved....but it was closed at the waterfall, so the walk back was uphill and a little rough. Don't let that deter you ....We wouldn't have traded the experience for anything! After the hike and more photos on the way down the mountain (which lasted about 90 mins total), Eddie took us over to a local eatery near the airport...the food was great and cheap (even if we got the world's worst waitress! LOL). After lunch, we headed back to the hotel. Eddie asked us what we were getting into the rest of the day, so we told him we were headed to Old San Juan for the afternoon. Eddie offered to give us a ride down there (which we gladly accepted). He allowed us time to go up to our room and change before we left. He picked it's up in his personal car and drive us over...still giving us great information about the island, and also life - advice we will surely cherish. He left us near the docks - and I must say, it was a little sad ending our time with him. It was like being with an Uncle you haven't seen in a while. He really takes care of people, and seems to genuinely enjoy what he does. He puts a lot of hard-work into perfecting his craft as an excursionist and it really shows. I know it has already been said in another review, but we honestly do feel like we have made a friend in Puerto Rico, and will definitely be calling WHEN we come back! Thank you very much for your time today, Eddie...We thoroughly enjoyed it - you made our vacation extremely memorable and special!

My wife and I researched various tours and decided that Eddie was the one because he was willing to do a private tour with just us two to the top of the rainforest and Bacardi Factory. He went out of his way to make sure we had a blast! Our morning started with him picking us up promptly at 8:00AM at our hotel. He had fresh fruits, cold water, great service, and very good conversations. The night before he made sure we had all we needed before booking with him so we were all set as soon as we jumped in the van. He told us all about El Yunque and what we would see, while taking his time driving the crazy streets of Puerto Rico. Once parked, he made sure we stretched and took a few pics of us before starting the hike. We went through the trails taking all the time we needed since it was very muddy and wet. We went all the way to the highest rock and spent a few minutes admiring the view; then we went back down to see Mt Britton. He took a bunch of great pictures of us as we went through the trails and shared them on dropbox when we were done. After El Yunque he took us to Bebo's BBQ in San Juan which was phenomenal (he said it would be)! He then took us to the Bacardi factory and patiently waited for us to take the tour, all this and it was his birthday! We had a full day with him. He showed us interesting areas of San Juan on the way back to the hotel and we couldn't be happier! Eddie is a trusted, funny, respecting, fun, and caring tour guide! So much so that I feel we must contact him next time just to say hi and have a drink even if we do not want to go on any tours. One of the best things about Eddie is that he is VERY flexible with his schedule and he will take you anywhere (that is reasonable of course). I feel he is an excellent guide and companion which is great because Puerto Rico has gotten pretty dangerous over the years and it is best to be with someone who knows the area and the history, even if you just want to be cabbed around the island. We recommend Eddie and Pandora Tours with our eyes closed! We loved our tour!

We arrived on time and we were warmly greeted by the captain and 2 crew. After a basic safety briefing we charted out towards Culebra in overcast weather. Instead of Culebra we settled on the uninhabited beach of Caya Luis Pena before Culebra with crystal clear waters in about 20 minutes. The waters were translucent clear turquoise and beach sand was pristine. Water temp was around 79-80F. Weather was overcast and comfortably cool. They laid out a simple light sandwich buffet for lunch with beers and tropical cocktails. Snorkeling, swimming and relaxing for a few hours, we spotted small schools of fish and a very cool bachelor Stingray circling looking for scraps. Crew was incredibly friendly and helpful and everyone enjoyed the short beach visit. The return trip was much smoother and after jumping back on the bus we were able to stop by a bbq joint for coconuts and fried stuffed empanadas.

Here in Vieques, this fort that served the same purpose is much smaller, not fully intact and locally managed. On my visit last week there was no admission fee nor would they even accept a donation. This initially surprised me but then while touring it I realized that this museum is still recovering from Hurricane Maria. Therefore not all of the normal displays are out for view but I still think this fort/museum is worth your time to visit. It takes about one minute to drive here when you leave the downtown area of Isabel II. At its unassuming entrance you drive up a steep hill to the fort. Parking is mostly on grass wherever you want to. Up there is the old fort brick entrance and the old fort brick walls with a few cannon added in. This area offers a commanding view of the town, port and Puerto Rico about 10 miles offshore. It is beautiful up there. Inside the newer building (built in 1991 that houses the indoor artifacts) it's a 2 story structure with exhibit rooms on both floors. It's open air ventilation with usually a breeze blowing though. My boyfriend and I wanted to go with a company where you can kayak in the water but by the time we got there, all of the seats were taken. Biobay Tours was the only company with a boat tour that had extra seats left. Since we had driven all the way from San Juan to see the bay, we said why not. Boy, did we get lucky not taking the kayaks. Yes, the kayaks would have been a great bonding activity for my boyfriend and I but knowing how paranoid I get about nature, especially in the dark, I'm really glad we took the Biobay tours. When you're in the kayaks, they don't have a light to show you the way so you can't see the environment you're in and since the kayaks do not go that far out into the bay (for safety purposes), you see the plankton light up less than with Biobay Tours. With Biobay tours, you sit in the boat which was perfect for my boyfriend since he was pretty reluctant about doing the work kayaking (haha). The boat has a light so you could clearly see through the mangrove channel we had to go through before getting to the bay. This was pretty cool because I've never seen trees like them and our tour guides pointed out giant iguanas and termite nests hidden in the trees. Since we were in a motorized boat, we were able to go farther into the bay and the farther into the bay you go, brighter the plankton were. Also, since we were in a motorized boat, we saw the plankton light trail behind us (so pretty). On the boat, they gave us sticks to put in the water to agitate the plankton to see them light up. If you were lucky, you got to hit jellyfish which also lit up because of the plankton! Our head tour guide was Mario who was super informative and really funny. We learned about the science and history of the mangroves and the bay and legends about the reserve. I had a couple of questions about the bay and he was able to answer my questions with no problem. It was also interesting getting to know him and the crew. The price for a tour was $52 per person, only a couple dollars more than the kayaks. They take card so don't worry about carrying a ton of cash with you. Overall, I highly recommend Biobay tours and would consider coming back again. Tips: ** Bring a DSLR camera if you can and if you can trust yourself with it. I was super disappointed that I didn't bring mine with me because phone cameras cannot capture the light of the plankton. I consider myself a pro-phone picture taker but you could BARELY see anything in the dark. ** Do not expect the plankton to be as blue as you see in the pictures. That's the magic of photoshop. ** Plan out when you go to the bay. If the moon is really bright, it is really hard to see the plankton. Also, throughout our trip it rained a lot so we were really lucky we went on a night it didn't rain.

What a great, happy captain and tour!…read more Frank is a USCG Master Captain and is fluent in both Spanish and English. He has a great wealth of knowledge on the history and current situation of Monkey Island, Isla de Mona. According to Frank, the monkeys were brought over in the 1930's by American researchers for scientific purposes from India,as they're closely related to us humans. It's the largest colony of monkeys in the world. Because of its sensitivity, only researchers are allowed on the actual island. However, Frank gets close enough to the island to observe a lot of the monkeys. He also anchors at a responsible length away to ensure that he does not disturb the monkeys. If you'd like to get even closer, he has a kayak, but again, he'll kindly remind you to be mindful of the monkey's habitat and that you cannot go on the island. Apart from the Monkey Island tours, he does snorkel, kayak, dive and fish. The boat is safe and has water, life jackets and other safety measures like a fire extinguisher. He will even play some music for you! My father and the people I was with, didn't get seasick, but I'll be honest, I did a little...so keep that in mind if that might be you! Haha Bring something that controls seasickness - it is a boat ride after all.
