From the moment Glen introduced himself, he shepherded our group from site to site, finding us shady spots whenever he could whilst sharing his voluminous historical, cultural, and cultural knowledge of Berlin and Germany. He also used multimedia very effectively to explain the sites and sights. His knowledge of Berlin and Germany is matched perhaps only by his love and respect for both--the latter of which was particularly manifest when he explained the book burning site, the location of Hitler's bunker, and the Holocaust memorial. Jeremy is indeed a masterful story teller with great insights on the city and its history. I learned there were 2711 blocks in the Holocaust Memorial which ironically are the same as the pages in the Talmud. Jeremy has a very easy going style and pays close attention to feedback which is so rare and important. I've had other experiences where I simply wasn't heard and that is Jeremy's special sauce... an ability to listen and carve out parts that appeal to travelers. When we…read morefirst met (as he picked us up at our hotel), I'd realized the folks at the Instrument Museum in Berlin had failed to return my passport, so I asked if we could stop by there, on the way to Potsdam, our tour destination, and Johannes made a special trip there for me! What a relief it was to get my passport back. The van Johannes uses is very comfortable, and he stocks cold drinks in case you get thirsty. You can shape your tours based on your interests. Our itinerary included a trip through the countryside to view Bablesberg castle and park- what an idyllic place! Then we traveled to Potsdam to view some of the reconstructed buildings. After that, we saw the water pump (which looks like a mosque and powered the fountains at Sanssouci), and we got our tickets for our tour. As we had time before our tour, we ate lunch in the old Dutch quarter- at the Flying Dutchman (delicious!). Our tour of Sanssouci was marvelous, and we never could have seen so much, and learned so much, so pleasantly, without our guide Johannes.

Paul Sullivan's tour of Prenzlauerberg "Beyond the Clichés"/"Beyond Kollwitzplatz" was so…read moreinteresting, relaxed, and enjoyable (an embodiment of the man himself!) that I even forgot the rain on this gray Sunday. Paul is affable and easy-mannered, as well as a font of knowledge about Berlin in seemingly all periods of its tumultuous history--from the 17th century to the present day. Walking around the neighborhood with him is my version of heaven: a casual stroll with a historical expert to drag you into Innenhöfe and explain the bullet holes, or point out the best hummus restaurant in the area, contextualizing everything in terms of Berlin's very particular history. At the start Paul asked each of us in the group about where we're from and whether we are residents or visitors, for the purpose of pitching his tour at the right level; and as a tour guide myself, I was in awe of his ability to walk the line between deep historical detail for those in the know and basic facts for neophytes. That's tough to do. The pacing was superb, the atmosphere friendly, you can ask questions or just lay back and watch--it really could not be improved in any way. I can hardly wait for the next tour: shall it be the Wall, Alexplatz, or Berlin's cemeteries? It hardly matters--at 20€ for two hours, they're a bargain; I'll do them all!
