Fat Tire is located behind the building that faces the fountain. The staff was friendly and in abundance. Alicia led us for four hours through a flat Berlin in the bike lanes, city streets, and dirt paths. At each stop, Alicia discussed both the pre-20th century Germanic history, to WWII events, to Cold War fallout. Her clever and sarcastic recollection of anecdotes and small details made sure the tour wasn't just lectures with an exercise break. At the end, you stop at a bier garten for some beer and food (not included) which means you won't burn out. Try to get in Alicia's group and bring some water. 100% recommend biking over walking tours. read more

I was a tour virgin before going on this tour, and I only went because it was mandatory on a work trip. Looking back on my visit to Berlin, the bike tour was my favorite part. The city is flat so it was wonderful cruising around. The tour guide told good stories, friendly/funny/social in the right mix. We went to Alexander Platz, Reichtag, Tiergarten for lunch, the underground bunker where Furhrer died, a watchtower by the wall and lots more. I think we were on the City Tour. We never biked more than 15 min, mostly shorter so it is at a leisurely pace. If you like to take pictures, wear something that makes it easy to pull out a camera while on a bike. read more

Berlin is enormous. There is no way to see the entire city in just a few days; but if you want to try, taking a bike tour is an excellent start. At first I wanted to try one of the Segway tours, but I'm not sure if Berlin could've handled my awesomeness if I was riding around on one of those things. We opted for the all-in-one tour that gave us a delightful overview of the major sights in Berlin. Our guide was funny and knowledgable, if a bit hard to follow sometimes. To be sure, this is not an in-depth tour. You see the Berlin Wall, the Jewish Memorial, The Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and more. But while you stop at Museum Island for instance, obviously you don't head inside any of the museums themselves. Your guide will give you the rundown on what all these sights are all about, and which ones he thinks are worth a return trip. I couldn't help but think of the contrast between Germany and the US's own litigious culture. Somehow I don't think any company would lead 20 bikers around a major metropolis without helmets. In addition, I'm fairly sure if it did happen, alcohol would be completely prohibited so the mid-tour stop at the beer garden would probably not fly either. All in all, it's a fun way to get a little exercise (although it is not strenuous by any means) and see a lot of Berlin in very little time. Just don't get killed, because I don't want that on my conscience. read more

What a great way to see the city! Tobi was or tour guide here in Berlin and he did a great job. I arrived at the business about 30 minutes early and they were still putting their rentals out for the day so asked me to wait. Of course I didn't mind. I knew I was early and it was a beautiful day to sit outside. About 15 minutes later, other people started showing up and they began having us fill out paper work, Only 2 short forms to read and sign. Simple. Once everyone in our group had arrived Tobi began explaining how Segway's work, demonstrated how to use them then gave each of us an opportunity to try it out with him giving one-on-one attention. After evefryone had a tunr, he gave each of us our own Segways and allowed us to practice for about 20 minutes, showing us how to navigate small bumps, speeding up, and braking. We were soon on our way, single file, through the streets of Berlin. Our actual tour, less the training, lasted about 3-3 1/2 hours.. It was so much fun feeling the breeze on my face. Some of the sights we saw were Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin Wall, Holocaust Memorial, Brandenburg Gate, the last watchtower, the parking lot over Hitler's bunker. Tobi was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. He gladly took our cameras to take pictures of us and even got down on the ground so he could get a picture of me on the segway with the watchtower behind me,. I was impressed with him and with the tour in general. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting berlin, or any other city where City Segway Tours operates. read more

Fat Tire Bike Tours rock! My first experience with them was back in Paris in 2005 (where I learned some of the owners are from Texas, my home state! Woo!) and now again in 2013 in Berlin with the All-In-One-City-Bike-Tour, which was even better because it included the option to buy and drink a German beer in the middle of it! Regardless if you are crunched for time or have a lot of time, bike tours are the best way to quickly get oriented to a city so you can scope down areas of interest for a follow-up visit post bike tour. Think of it this way, burn some calories before you indulge in vacation eating sprees! I highly recommend doing these within the first or second day of arrival of a new city. Kiran from Ireland was our guide and not only was he entertaining, passionate about his job, and super knowledgeable about Berlin's history, from start to finish (11AM-4:30P/5P), he was easy on the eyes! *wink* Ha! This was the highlight of my trip to Berlin. I've gone to many other cities around the world and have always done a walking tour, but when I saw a bike tour, I decided to give it a try. It was so worth it. On the bike, I was able to see the majority of Berlin without getting tired. Starting from the TV tower we went through the majority of East and West Berlin. I particularly liked seeing where Hitler died and going through the Tiergarten to drink and eat at the biergarten. I met a lot of tourists on this bike tour and it was fun to learn about different cultures and countries. It's definitely a lot better than exploring on your own. My guide was a Canadian and he knew a lot about Berlin having lived there for a few years. He was funny at times but in the end he kept us safe from getting hit by cars. The bikes were all in good condition. They were 3 speed beach cruisers with fat seats so your ass won't get sore after 4 hours of riding around. They each come with lights so if it's dark, pedestrians and automobiles can see you. I'd definitely go on another bike tour in Europe run by Fat Tire Bike Tours. read more

Berlin is the perfect city for a bike tour. Unlike Paris or London (other Fat Tire locations), it's a very bike-friendly city (wide roads, bike paths, bike-aware drivers, few hills, etc), and also unlike those cities it's very spread out and impossible to cover on foot. I enjoyed my Fat Tire tour, and met some really interesting people on it. The guide was knowledgeable, the bikes were good, and the 5+ hour tour had good site coverage. The reasons I don't give 5* are that the group was a little large (around 20 bikes) and the guides solicitation for tips put me off a little. However, neither of these things should dissuade you from the tour. read more

It is very interactive too, you get to discuss and exchange opinions on this important piece of our history. The only way to see a city (when you have this option) is via a Segway. And if you are in Berlin, hopefully, Tobi will be your guide. As we had to deal with a torrential rain, we stood under an umbrella for about 30 minutes. During this time, Tobi gave us his insight of what it was like to like in communist Germany and how it is different now. Tobi was refreshingly honest with his overview of the city and sites. Early November we went on a Fat tire Bike tour with guide Hannah. The tour was absolutely perfect. It was the highlight of our trip to Berlin (actually it was the highlight of our week). In high season they have several types of tours during the week, I wish I could have gone on them all. Everything about the tour was so easy. We looked up when the tour was, and went to their office a few minutes beforehand. The office was easy to find, we meet out front of the TV tower. They had a location there, and put up a big flag that said Bike tours meet here. It was very easy to find. They gave us an overview of how the tour would work, what we needed, how we would be split up, to get cash for lunch, and that we would have a chance to go to the bathroom before the tour started. Then they had us go to the bathroom, get cash, get gloves, etc. before we got bikes. This worked quite well at keeping everyone comfortable! This was a completely useful into that covered everything. I couldn't believe how organized they were. The bike ride was pretty fast paced, which was great because we covered a lot of ground. We stopped for lunch in the Tiergartent Beergarden. It was quite good, and had a few vegetarian options! It was surprisingly outstanding. All of the people at Fat Tire seemed super knowledgeable and interesting. I was really quite impressed with Fat Tire. We saw Brandenberg gate, Reichstag (Berlin Parliament), Tiergartetn park (which was lovely), Victory column, Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe, the Berlin Wall, and Checkpoint Charlie. We covered a lot of the must see sights! I also thought it was interesting to see the Nazi Air Force base, to be in what used to be the death strip, and to see the building Angela Merkel works in! read more

My husband and I did the all day city bike tour (6.5 hours). Despite the chilly weather, Jim was able to keep us informed and entertained with his high energy and knowledge. I loved my adorable cruiser bike from Fat Tire! 12 euros to rent a bike for a day! That is a major score in my books. Berlin is quite spread out and I'm not the biggest fan of hopping on and off buses and subways, so biking around the city is key. You also get to feel like a local, and you're getting in exercise between rounds of beer! Berlin is super bike friendly. Someone (was it you?!) recommended these tours to us for checking out Berlin - they offer a few different options but the tour that got me excited was the evening food tour. Biking AND eating?! Oh yeh! We'd got the Berlin Card/Welcome ticket thingy when we arrived so we got a discount when booking - it's normally €49pp but we paid about €79 for the two of us (plus we left a €20 tip as our guide was awesome AND he'd ridden a 120km bike race that day!). The only issue was that we needed to go to the booking office in Alexanderplatz to book it to get the discount, I couldn't see a way of getting the discount booking through their website. No biggie, the office is super easy to find (just keep walking around the TV tower and you'll find it eventually). We arrived a little early for our tour but our guide was there and ready to go. They have toilets at the office as well as bag storage, and they were pretty punctual about leaving at 5.30pm. There were 9 people on our tour in all which was a good sized group. We first rode to James-Simon Park where we parked our bikes and our guide, Andrew, cracked open three bottles of bubbles which was a fun way to start the ride! From there, we headed to our entree/starter stop - DaDa Falafel. We'd had dinner here the night before but it was good enough that we were happy to stop here again. This time we sampled a falafel platter and a halloumi platter which were both nice. It's important to note the tour includes all food, but you need to pay for any drinks you have along the way. We got back on our bikes and rode to the Berlin Wall Memorial and stopped there while Andrew told us some history. His knowledge is excellent and interesting, and he clearly knows his stuff. Our next stop was at Restaurant Die Schule where we tried a selection of German tapas dishes as well as a flat bread/pizza type thing. Delicious! Finally, we stopped at Cafe Anna Blume for dessert where we got a choice of cake and hot drink. I was totally melting from the ride by this point so was offered a soft drink which was nice! We then rode back to the Fat Bike office to drop the bikes off and by this point it was around 11pm so it had been a long but nicely paced evening! Tips: - The tour guide will look after any bike maintenance needs you have and will help you with road rules/crossing busy streets etc so you can relax. - Wear comfortable clothes for riding and take some layers as it can get chillier at night. - Most roads you ride on are small streets where cyclists have right of way over cars, or in special bike lanes. Riding in Berlin is heavenly! - Take cash for paying for drinks/extras. - Hopefully your tour guide will give you a tonne of recommendations - Andrew marked a bunch on a map for us at the end of the tour which was super nice of him. - You can leave your bag locked up at their office if you don't want to take it on the tour. - If you like good food, you'll like this tour - I was worried the places were going to be mediocre but I was really impressed with the choices. - Some level of fitness is recommended - I was pretty exhausted by the end of the ride but I am about "sloth" on the fitness scale of animals. read more
