And there are positives: It has a nice retro vibe, and it is cute, clean, and seems well maintained. However.... Room 9 smells like an old stale ashtray. When I asked the person who checked us in if we could have a no smoking room, he said that room 9 was a no smoking room. It was midnight, I was tired so we took the smelly room. Later I woke up and started the air-conditioner because the room had become very warm. Turning on the air-conditioner caused a massive blast of stale tobacco air to fill the room. It was so strong I was nauseated. (Note: Thirty years ago I was a heavy smoker. I have a pretty high tolerance for the smell of my formerly beloved cigarettes, stale or otherwise.) And.... The guy at the desk told us his "credit card machine was down" and we would need to pay in cash. I offered to pay by card in the morning. No, didn't think it would be working then. I didn't really buy it. Never got a receipt for the cash. Maybe it was true, but to be honest I felt scammed. The guy was nice enough, though quite insistent that we pay in cash. My apologies if it really was a one time thing. Overall, I do actually recommend this motel, but before you make a reservation or check in, get confirmation that you will be able to pay by credit card and that your room is not saturated with stale tobacco if those things are important to you.

Reviews were great so we quickly pulled the trigger! Check in process was super simple. You can check in on the app and you can actually pick your room. Since we have never stayed here before, we didn't have a preference so we let them pick. We quickly verified the ID at the front desk and we were on our way to our room. Receptionist were both very friendly and even offered us waters. They do have hot coffee and hot water for tea/hot chocolate available 24/7 in the lobby. They also have a 24/7 store at the desk with sooo many snacks and drink options! They have multiple TVs, sittting areas and shuffle board/foosball in the lobby, which we saw lots of people enjoying. Our room was spacious. Plenty of room for storage. It smelled fresh and clean. The shower was perfect size, just wish the water was a bit warmer. My boyfriend has been raving about the hand soap since the second he tried it (it's a great scent!). They have hand soap, body lotion, conditioner, shampo, body wash all hanging on the wall for your convenience. Our king bed was very comfy and the AC worked perfectly in our room. The breakfast was probably the best hotel breakfast I have ever eaten. So many options! I opt for the cheese egg omelets, sausage patties, and pancakes. Plenty of toppings for your pancakes, as well as toppings for yogurt and oatmeal too. Large variety of breads and carbs. It was perfect before a long day at Cedar Point! The Wagner's Inn website does not do it justice. Everything is bigger in real life than the pictures. Especially the billiard/ rec room. It's very comfortable and full of fun stuff to do. We absolutely loved it!…read morePrior to booking the bed and breakfast, the two owners (Virgil and Suzee) were great at communicating prices (very low) and accommodations, as well as on point with reminders. They went out of their way to make our stay pleasant, they even changed their own plans as well! As for the house itself, it is something out of a story book! Suzee is an exceptional designer, and the entire house feels lively and comfortable. You truly feel at home. You get the entire upstairs which includes a massive bedroom, a TV room, and a private bathroom. No one bothers you or even checks up on you. You are given the house key, so you are free to come and go as you please. With being only 1 mile from the lake (great for sunsets!), and just minutes from the great local shops and restaurants in Sandusky, OH, the Cottage Rose is the place to stay! (Especially at only $85 a night!).

Front desk staff very nice at check-in. 2 queen room was spacious with trundle sofa, that was comfortable for school age child. Extra pillow and comforter in closet for trundle soft but no additional sheets. Room has spacious bathroom, mini fridge, but no microwave. In hallway there is an ice machine and filtered water refill, which was great. Hotel had just opened within 1 month, but concerning is how dirty the floors/hallways are already. Carpet wasn't cleanly placed and you can see a lot of flaws throughout but not a huge deal. The dirty tile and carpeted floor just soon after opening is a little concerning so soon after opening. The stairs and hallways were not vacumed the 3 days we were there. The room was clean but not spotless on check-in. We asked for towels one evening and they were brought up within minutes by very kind staff. Breakfast had microwave style pork bacon, spinach/swiss crustless quiche (which was really great), assorted bagels, plain Greek yogurt, dairy and non-dairy milk options. Warm oatmeal and topping station for oatmeal/yogurt was great. Basic hotel hot coffee/tea options, Scrambled eggs with salsa/hot sauce. Waffle making station (2). The breakfast area is quite small and gets very busy after 8am, with staff having a hard time keeping items stocked and long wait to make a waffle. Breakfast is great prior to 8am. Pool area is very small and when more than 2 families are in pool, feels cramped and busy. No hot tub. I went to 24/7 gym each morning and used treadmill, which was nice. The sensor for lighting when working out (during dark hours) is a safety issue. Every 20 minutes the lights turned off completely, you would need to get off equipment and walk over to the door to turn lights back on. Filtered water station but bring your own bottle. Pricey for location, amenities but not a bad choice overall.
