My intro instructor and the staff member who signed me up were POC, and I see that diversity is reflected in my fellow students in almost every class. ​Why I love this studio: ​The Vibe: I was so nervous about being "underdressed," but people here show up in Crocs, leggings, and oversized t-shirts. It's a true "come as you are" environment. ​The Community: A fantastic range of ages and backgrounds. I've never felt out of place. ​The Instructors: I started out super nervous, but every instructor has made me feel safe and supported. I've been practicing here for just over three months, and I continually leave class with a calm state of mind feeling relaxed and refreshed. All the instructors are super friendly and encouraging, fostering a safe, judgment-free environment. Shout out to all the instructors that have taught me SO MUCH. Thank you, Liz (owner), Ashley, Jamie, Julie, Michelle, and of course Beau. I love that they each have their unique teaching style, keeping classes fun and exciting. They consistently reinforce fitting the practice to fit your own body's needs. Whether you're just starting or have been doing this for years, all yogis are welcome here. Pilates and barre are still on my to-do list, but I've heard great things about them! They also hold events such as Barre-oke (barre meets karaoke), sound baths, buti yoga, and drum circles. They even did a special puppy (foster puppies) yoga session last month! Things To Note: Although the Shiva Studio remains listed on the Active & Fit website, it no longer participates in the A&F program. In The Kutt, a hip-hop dance studio is right next door; sometimes, each studio has a class simultaneously. Unfortunately, at no fault of Shiva's own, can be distracting to hear their music during a yoga session. However, this happens infrequently and isn't enough to negatively impact their score. FYI, after my two-week trial, I needed some assistance initiating the monthly membership through the Shiva website. Liz quickly and efficiently helped me with this in person at the studio. The Mind Body app is the most efficient way of looking up the weekly schedule and signing up for classes. Liz checks in on you by email after your first few sessions to see if you have any questions or comments! She has been timely and informative with my email inquiries. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The instructor did not appear particularly engaged or enthusiastic about teaching. Instructions were delivered quickly while walking around the studio, with no demonstrations on the equipment, which made it difficult to follow--especially for beginners. Additionally, the studio's acoustics made it challenging to hear or understand much of what was being said. Most of us were scrambling to keep up. I could see myself getting injured and probably won't be going back. The whole experience felt transactional and very uninspired.

Jenny is an amazing, patient and non-intimidating instructor who made me feel comfortable right away. I started with a few private lessons and easily transitioned into the beginner classes. I love the small class size (max 4) and I find the movements to be somewhat familiar from lifting weights, but more fluid with an emphasis on breathing, stretching and core. I definitely enjoy the mind-body element to Pilates that I didn't get in the gym, it feels like I am doing something good for my mental wellness as well as my physical health!
