Today I made a special trip and the front door was locked, the lights on inside with employees milling around and a huge dumpster blocking the front door. No sign on the door with an explanation. I got the attention of a male employee who gave me this rude sign language response which I couldn't understand. I inquired at the concierge desk in the mall and the guy said they had remodeled recently but he was surprised they were still closed. I bought a hat at Champs in the mall instead.

This a pop up rock T-shirt vintage shop in the Aventura mall. It is located across from the model…read moretrain display. My friend alerted me to its presence or I might have walked right past it. Jara Eisen is the designer of the brand. Jara is a breast cancer survivor and her company supports the charity Fight Like a Girl. The idea for SoJara came to her when she and her daughter were unpacking a box and found an old shirt from a breast cancer walk they did and they didn't have the heart to throw it out. Instead Jara cut it up and sewed it on to a cozy flannel shirt. Now she's doing the same thing with band T's. It is her mission to "spread good vibes through inspirational messages and love for Rock & Roll". I think this is an awesome idea. All the shirts are sourced by Jara. Bands they had included my favorite Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard which was my first ever concert, as well as Metallica, The Who, The Beatles, and Nirvana to name just a few. Some of the band T- shirts have been repurposed and put on the back of vintage jackets and flannel plaid shirts. The also had hats, stickers, and jewelry. It definitely made me feel old that shirts from concerts of my era are now vintage. It also made start thinking about where my old shirts were. My daughter never wanted them although she did steal her father's Lollapalooza shirt. I guess she thinks he was cooler than me. LOL Coming here brought back so many memories about concerts I had gone to and how excited I was to wear the shirt the next day in high school. It was fun to look through the clothes and see the names of the bands I loved in my youth. If you want to check out what they have you can follow Jara on Instagram @SoJara. Rock on!

Architectural features of the buildings include those used the 1920's Florida land boom time and after it went bust during the Depression and New Deal eras. Melina's Lingerie Shoppe is part of the city of Hollywood's Historical Landmark Plaque Tour sponsored by the Hollywood Historical Society and the Community Redevelopment Agency. This is stop number 10. Opened in 1945, Melinas is the oldest family owned and continuously operated business on Hollywood Blvd. The store is named for the current owner Elsie Johns "Miss J"'s stepmother Melina Tomich. The store started out selling children's underwear and clothes and evolved into selling lingerie. 98 year old Miss J still runs the family business. When they first started selling undergarments all women wore girdles, hosiery, and bras. As girdles fell out of fashion they began to sell the more revealing lingerie that is popular today. With its jewel colored walls the store maintains a vintage feel. A historic plaque on the outside of the building notes its historical significance.

Regular hours are from 11:30 to 4:30 pm on most other days. The store specializes in women's clothing and accessories -- bras, girdles, etc., but also hats, scarves, and the like. We weren't here to shop, however. We came here to find the historic plaque on the outside of the building. This store was honored as the "oldest continuously operated business on the (Hollywood) Boulevard". Last year, Elsie Johns, 97 at the time, was interviewed. She still was going into work everyday in the building that her father built. Melina's was named after her father's second wife. In this location since 1946, this is quite an accomplishment. Today, the average life of a small business is under 10 years. And they are still going at over 70 years!
