On this visit, I chose Cocomama for part of the trip. Cocomama is close to Fredericksplein, which is the main artery for some hip places you'll want to go. It is near the city centre, but not too close, otherwise it gets tacky. The ladies at the front desk are friendly and helpful. They give you a full tour of the hostel, which was once a brothel. Just my luck... In the basement, there is a nice lounge area with shared kitchen and dining space. Lots of lovely couches to fall asleep on and a beautiful cat to keep you company. There is also a garden and you can go out there from 9AM - 9PM, only cigarette smoking allowed. Tons of books, movies to keep you entertained. You can also play old-school Nintendo. Wow brings back memories. They will also do your laundry for €6. If you don't have a tablet or computer, they can loan you one. Good wifi throughout the hostel. If you arrive before check-in time, you can leave your bag and check-in later, the front desk open 9AM - 9PM. I stayed in a 4 bed coed room aptly named, "The Brothel Room." Beds are comfy and also there are lockers in the room if you need to lock up something. The bathroom is in the room, so not as big of a hassle to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. My only gripe is that they don't serve breakfast. It is probably one of the only places I've stayed at in Amsterdam that doesn't have breakfast. Bummer...

Unfortunately, the day after we checked out of the hostel my room mate woke up with bed bug bites all over her back and on her face. I understand that this is the risk you take when staying in a hostel, however I always expect for the staff to do thorough examinations of every bed before a new guest checks in. We immediately alerted Coco Mama via email about the bed bug situation. We told them about the time and money that we lost having to dry clean everything we brought into their hostel and asked for them to check the beds we stayed in. I received a response telling me that unfortunately things like this happen in hostels. There was no apology or mention of a partial refund for our stay. I reached out two more times about the situation and inquired about a refund and got no response. I find this to be completely unprofessional and telling of Coco Mama. It's unfortunate that what started out as a great stay ended up costing us time, more money, and a bad case of bed bug bites. I would not recommend staying at this hostel.

I had never stayed in a hostel before, so I was a bit nervous based on stories from friends in other crowded cities. The check-in process was very easy. I booked through hostelworld and they just needed a passport to verify, then gave me the entrance key, house rules, and directions to my room. I stayed in a co-ed room with about 20 other people. Each bed was in bunk form with clean sheets and pillows with plenty of secure space to keep luggage underneath and an outlet to charge devices on the wall. The showers were clean and I felt like I had privacy while changing as well. The atmosphere at night was awesome. During my first night, I met four people each from a different area of the United States/England and we ended up bar hopping together. What an experience that was! The nightly rates are only a few more bucks than other similar ones, but I can assure you that they do not have the energy like the downtown Flying Pig does!

Can change out towels as needed from a file cabinet in the common area; I shared a room with my friend, so grabbed an extra comforter as well- both items included! Pod living was similar to that of Japan, limited but adequate space. Common area available if you needed more room, place to work, etc. It felt a bit cramped for two people, but was fine overall. Something to kite if you are traveling with friends and value your privacy. Otherwise, we liked our stay overall and would definitely choose this hotel again. The prices are extremely reasonable, I think I paid about €20/ night. My friend and I had such a great stay that we actually re-routed our trip back to Rotterdam for another night. Breakfast was simple, but high quality and they also rent bikes for a very reasonable rate. The only downside (which was only half a bad) was that at night I discovered have some very tasty, and slightly expensive, deserts for sale. That said, I only regret that part because of my abnormally high cravings for food during my stay at King Kong.

The atmosphere of the hostel is so relaxing and inviting and the fresh lilacs made everything smell fantastic. Every morning we had a breakfast prepared by the staff and there was an option to have fresh eggs that were absolutely delicious. One complaint, or rather a warning: there's a man who lives above the bar across the street (lovely little local bar, by the way) who kind of just...hates people. He yelled and swore at my friends and I for simply being outside at any time of day, and at one point, he actually dumped a bucket of water out his window onto my friends. I hope this man receives the help he needs but he is extremely rude and bad for business.

The room I stayed in was for 14 people and had 2 shower, and a separate toilet for everyone to use. There are bike rental available if you want to cycle around town like the natives & even had a musician come in to entertain the guests once a week. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to everyone if you want to have a comfortable stay at a hostel.

The hostel is located just beyond Amsterdam's city limits (about 25 minutes away from central station) and is well connected with the best free shuttle service ever. The distance may worry you at first, but the magic of Lucky Lake will touch your spirit in a unmatched way. It's quite possibly the best hostel experience I've ever had. Here's the deal: LL is made up of 30-something caravans, cabins and dorms. Breakfast is served on an old yellow school bus and if that doesn't make you want to stay, nothing will. It's genius. We stayed in a yellow caravan and I will never forget it. It was so cute, homey and decked out in vintage decor. It looks like they hired Baddy Winkle to decorate and I say that in the most flattering way possible. Basically, get ready to have a photoshoot, we did. Instagram vanity aside, the staff at Lucky Lake is incredible. Getting to know them all over the course of a weekend, seriously felt like a lifetime. We left with genuine laughs, conversations and the best memories to date. From a smooth check-in at reception, ordering toasties (grilled cheese) at 11 PM to shuttle rides, every second felt oddly familiar. Getting to Lucky Lake: Don't let the distance scare you. Amsterdam's transportation system is very reliable. We felt well connected to the city center and had no trouble getting from the hostel to the city for attractions like visiting the Anne Frank House. The best part is that Lucky Lake has free shuttle that will take you a 10 minute ride away to 'Amsterdam Holendrecht' station where you can get a direct train to 'Amsterdam Centraal' station (plus many others). I highly recommend buying a metro card because they are based on time instead of distance. So we picked up a 72 hour metro card for only 17 Euros and could ride an unlimited amount of times within those 72 hours. #Blessed. I know what you're thinking, can I smoke at Lucky Lake? Of course you can. this is Amsterdam we're talking about. You can smoke everywhere in the common areas, other than within your caravan, cabin or dorm. There's also the Lucky Lounge, which is a great place to relax, but it also doubles a smoking room. Smoke in the hammocks, smoke at breakfast, smoke by the lake (a 5 min walk)- do you. What to do at Lucky Lake: I'll be honest. When you're planning your trip, you will think about spending most of your time in the city center but you'll actually end up spending a decent amount of time at the hostel. To occupy your time, you can head to the lake (the weather wasn't in our favor on this trip) for kayaking, biking, paddle boarding and swimming. Grab a beer from reception and head to a bonfire island party or pull out your fishing rods by the water. Frankly, Lucky Lake has enough to be a vacation in and of itself, so it is truly what you make it. Eating at Lucky Lake: Breakfast is free and goes until 11:30 AM for all you stoner kids. There's a choice of either eggs or pancakes on alternating days, bread, fruit and juice. It's simple and saves you a ton of money. Rent a bike for just 1.50 euros per hour and take a bike ride (15 minutes) to the nearest grocery store if you want to cook a few meals in the outdoor kitchen. Or be like us and never cook, yet eat 2 toasties per day (get the sweet chili dipping sauce and thank me later) for only 1.50 euro. Crazy. Simply put, Lucky Lake felt like home. If you want to have a unique experience in Amsterdam, you have to stay here. Plus, you'll look cute in all your grams'. Seriously, there's not one bad thing to say about this place. Keep in mind that you're sleeping outside, so there will be a few bugs in the room, but the linens and space are as clean as a whistle. I seriously want to work here- it's magical. #YouMeTravel

Bad advertising and bad business practice. Well, then when she got to the hostel (I arrived later), they didn't have our beds ready on time, she had to wait in the kitchen/dining area (THERE IS NO COMMON SPACE HERE OTHER THAN THE KITCHEN), and they forgot about her! Haha. Luckily by that time I showed up, and we got our beds. We went out, came back to the room, and someone had put their luggage on my friend's bed. The owner of the luggage returns and explains that she had put the luggage there because no one had made her bed/changed the sheets. We go to the guy at the front desk to ask him to put clean sheets on this girl's bed, and he proceeds to turn on the lights in the dorm (everyone is sleeping), and YELL at my friend! Now, come on, yes, I love boys, but the honest truth is, they are dirty. And if it isn't a boy I like or love, I am not sure I want to deal with their funkiness just for a few nights when passing through a city. This hostel is clean and very cute. Very girly, lots of pink all around. There is a cool lounge area where you can read, use your comp, lounge and meet other interesting travelers. The girl at the front desk was super nice even though it was crazy busy. She was trying to check a bunch of people in and answer the phone also. I booked for a 4-bed room, but apparently, they overbooked and she only had an 8-bed room for me. I said ok, wasn't a big deal. She also discounted my stay and gave me free breakfast in the morning (normally it is 5 euros). They have a kitchen, so you can store your food and cook. Also, a nice library full of interesting books. Bathrooms are clean and there are many, so no waiting in the morning. I really liked this hostel and when I come thru Amsterdam again, I would consider staying here. But the only problem is it is a bit out of Central Amsterdam. It is easily accessible by train, but still a bit of a pain to get to when it is late at night, so that's why the 4 stars.
