It also leads to the dog park as well which is a super great one that is separated by dog size. It was so nice to walk along the river with my dog on our way to the dog park and I saw people having a picnic next to the river which was such a cute idea that I wish I had. Walton Street Park has a really nice looking pool (well, the water's not great right now as the…read morepark is closed for the season) but there is also a fenced in full-court basketball court and a large baseball field with a backstop. The playground set is large with a climbing frame and ramps. Very large picnic shelter with ten picnic tables and barbecue grills. The park is clean and in very good condition. There is a nice paved walking trail here that follows the riverside. Even in the rain, I saw a bicycler and a jogger with his dog. The park is named for Jean Wbb, who for many years has been a key advocate for the river through her leadership and contributions to the French Broad River Foundation and later RiverLink. We walked in the direction of the bridges. That worked out well because there was a bench in the shade under the first bridge and with a nice breeze we were feeling cooler than we had felt in the sun. It was 82 degrees that day. While we sat, numerous groups of people in tubes, in kayaks, and in canoes came by. The bench had a nice view of the River .

Pack Square is the heart of downtown Asheville, with an old-town charm surrounded by rows of local…read moreshops, taverns, antique stores, and historic municipal buildings that bring the community together. It's the old meeting the new of offices and restaurants. It's a wonderful place to stroll with your dog as along cobbles paths or park, grab a slice of pizza, and spend the afternoon browsing the weekend arts and crafts vendors. What's missing is music...preferable from shops or speaks from town square...that would really hit the mark.

It is a short hike from the parking lot to the summit. The concessions lady was super nice and even had a biscuit for my dog. There are gorgeous hiking trails throughout the area. I will be back for sure.

Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. We heard the sunrise was pretty awesome…read morethere so we just had to do it. Many roads were still closed offer Hurricane Helene so it literally took us 2 hours to drive about 20 miles to get there for sunrise. But, we made it. Driving up that high and then hiking up to the summit, the temperature dropped into the 20's. It was a brisk adventure, but it was a beautiful and peaceful experience. You can drive to a parking lot and then take about a 1/4 of a mile hike straight up on a semi paved path.
