They claim that this area is completely beyond the rules and the laws of Copenhagen. In some ways, that is pretty easy to see as the main street is lined with people selling weed and hash, which is still illegal in Denmark. Copenhagen is not Amsterdam. Though a bit sketchy, this city within a city is very well maintained. I am sure there is some other story going on here. ...One that we will never know. This being said, what you will find here is some of the best street art and graffiti that you will witness anywhere across Copenhagen. Of course, it is clearly stated all over the place, "No Photos." But, I'm guess that is more to keep the people dealing drugs safe and off the radar than anything else. One of the funny/interesting things I find about this location is that tour buses actually pull up to it. I don't know, maybe it's just me me, but if you are truly embracing an alternative lifestyle that all seems rather intrusive. Nonetheless, this is an interesting place. Even if all you do is look at the great street art, it is worth the visit.

Nyhavn is a beautiful waterfront adorned with restaurants, canal tours, and connection to the fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen, who lived in several of its houses. The vibrant colors of the houses were spectacular. "Nyhavn is a historic 17th-century canal district in Copenhagen, Denmark, famous for its colorful 17th-century townhouses, historic ships, and vibrant atmosphere." I made it a point to pass by daily because the beauty of the waterfront was a great way to start my day. It was a joy to see the shopkeepers get their restaurants ready for business, customers lining up for the canal tours and getting a peek at the Kissing Bridge. My visit in December was special due to the Christmas spirit at Nyhavn, where the iconic harbour is lined with festive stalls selling Christmas decorations, traditional Danish Christmas treats and steaming cups of gløgg (mulled wine). There are numerous restaurants offering fine dining to casual eating, especially the famous open faced sandwich, Smorrebrod. Nyhavn is close to the Royal Opera House, Royal Danish Theater and the Broen Food Market. It is a must see in Copenhagen.

In any case, this is where you can see many of the local prostitutes and drug addicts. They are normally not aggressive as long as you avoid eye contact, so just be cool. Wait, where are you going? Come back, it is really worth a visit. For one thing, there are a lot of great restaurants here or on its side streets; especially if you want Asian food. Although Magasasa and Thai Corner scream "tourist trap!" due to their close proximity to the central station, you can get good, authentic food. After that you'll want a drink, and it's easy to roll your distended belly down to Ølbutikken or Mikkeller. And if you drink one too many, drag yourself further down to Kebabistan for that late night stomach-padding. Although it is sort of an ugly street, it has its own charm and so many nice places to eat and drink. Just refrain from buying any people or drugs and you'll have a great time. Back in the 90ties I were studying Geography, and we were making a analysis of the street. It had been a vibrant street in a working class area with all kinds of shopping. The street died, and it raised again like a phoenix. All the essential shopping is back, but it's a hipster community. Fortunately a lot of the housing in the area is non-profite, so the area known as The Black Square is still black by it's emigrants and drunks. You can also spot a student or two. In the street you can buy to expensive coffee, support Islamic extremists, have icecreme, buy clothing, hang out with cheap beer, or do what you want. We're inclusive at Blågårdsgade. Just remember we live here, and you're a probably a guest.

A great area that embodies Inner Nørrebro perfectly. A lot of Danes (including those "with another…read moreethnic background than Danish," as ethnic Danes would say), international hipsters, and immigrants like me hang out here. Although the street itself is dirty, the shop fronts are colourful and attractive and the graffiti is cool (NOT the tagging). Why are we all hanging out here? Because there is something for everyone. Blågårds Apoteket for the older day-drinking crowd, Harbo Bar for the hipsters, Beyti for drunks in need of a meal, and Cafe N for the vegetarians. Obviously these divisions are not cut and dried and of course there are also some places with a mostly mixed demographic like Props, Hind Marked, or the library. Although this street has had a troubled past, it is a nice blend now and when I'm here I feel at home. It's especially great when there is a block party or fleamarket going on. Definitely check it out if you are visiting Copenhagen, just stay out of the way of cyclists. It has everything you would expect it to have: cozy cafés, cute restaurants, charming flower shops and little alleyways that lead you to more interesting places and corners. Just have a stroll down here if you can, and I guarantee you, one of the little boutique shops will call out your name, begging for you to go explore it further!

Early mornings are for the running people (and the walk of shame people) then comes the fashionable girls walking with a latte, the dog people, the late runners and finally the sunset chasers. Copenhagen's waterfront is facing east, so one of the best places to see the sun set behind the rooftop is here. My favorite is to share a bottle of wine (yes, this is legal here) by the stairs next to the Planetary. From here you can enjoy the last sun and wonderful atmosphere.

It's hard to miss the lakes, but whenever I'm in Copenhagen, I want to pay them a proper visit too. This time I was staying in an AirBnB very close to the lakes - in Østerbro, and gladly walked all the way pass the lakes to Vesterbro a snowy Friday morning. There weren't many people, but it was the best tour to start my trip with. This is the perfect place for a nature-ish walk (without even leaving the city center!), for a run, for walking the dog, for just sitting and chatting and having picnics when the weather is nice. It simply really is a pretty place! Walking from Østerbro to Vesterbro, along one side of the lakes, takes about 40-45 minutes.

Along the canal you can see individual "kutters", I mean sail boats and old, but charming and colorful stone buildings. I have also had a chance to paddle along the canal in a kayak tour. That was awesome!

There were various booths set up with a number of foods, mostly fruits, veggies, and herbs. My friend who lives in the area says a lot of the vendors just give what they have left at the end of the day to needy people who can't afford to purchase the items. I thought that was a really good idea, and very progressive of them. This area was surrounded by shops, restaurants and cafes. There were some benches to sit, and made for good people watching, as well as getting acclimated to the area.

Offerings are raw; veggies, fruits, flowers. Prices are great and business is usually high, especially in Saturdays. Don't expect any ready made foods at this market, but rather run to some of the smaller falafel places around the square. Best coffee break after your shopping is the coffee bar without a name on the corner.
