Back in the 90ties I were studying Geography, and we were making a analysis of the street. It had been a vibrant street in a working class area with all kinds of shopping. The street died, and it raised again like a phoenix. All the essential shopping is back, but it's a hipster community. Fortunately a lot of the housing in the area is non-profite, so the area known as The Black Square is still black by it's emigrants and drunks. You can also spot a student or two. In the street you can buy to expensive coffee, support Islamic extremists, have icecreme, buy clothing, hang out with cheap beer, or do what you want. We're inclusive at Blågårdsgade. Just remember we live here, and you're a probably a guest.

A great area that embodies Inner Nørrebro perfectly. A lot of Danes (including those "with another…read moreethnic background than Danish," as ethnic Danes would say), international hipsters, and immigrants like me hang out here. Although the street itself is dirty, the shop fronts are colourful and attractive and the graffiti is cool (NOT the tagging). Why are we all hanging out here? Because there is something for everyone. Blågårds Apoteket for the older day-drinking crowd, Harbo Bar for the hipsters, Beyti for drunks in need of a meal, and Cafe N for the vegetarians. Obviously these divisions are not cut and dried and of course there are also some places with a mostly mixed demographic like Props, Hind Marked, or the library. Although this street has had a troubled past, it is a nice blend now and when I'm here I feel at home. It's especially great when there is a block party or fleamarket going on. Definitely check it out if you are visiting Copenhagen, just stay out of the way of cyclists. Nørrebrogade is the main street in the old working class neighbourhood Nørrebro. Like most old…read moreworking class neighbourhoods has Nørrebrogade undergone a gentrification the last 20 years. Fortunately the neighbourhood fights back and hipsters have not overtaken Nørrebro. Nørrebrogade is a very vibrant example. Because of Nørrebro's many social housing estates the neighbourhood is still one of the areas in Denmark with the lowest income. Nørrebrogade still is a shopping street, where you can do most of your shopping without getting riped. The part of the street closest to Indre By (the central part of Copenhagen) is the hipster area. And the other end is dominated by emigrant shops. Parts of Nørrebrogade have been turned into bikes and public transportation only, and a lot of the lane is devoted to bikes. It is a joy to ride your bike here. At the same time a large part of the street next to Assistens Kirkegård was turned into pavemen, and here you can sit in the sun enjoying a meal or a beverage.

Wow!!! Rundetaarn is on the Top Ten must see list when in Copenhagen. What makes " Round Tower" so…read morespecial and intriguing? I'm glad you asked... With its distinctive spiral ramp, the Round Tower has become a Danish landmark. Here are some notable facts and points of interest: 1.The Hollow Core: the shape of the tower was Denmark's geographical zero point. 2. There is an Observatory which houses a telescope built in 1929. 3. The Library Hall is used for changing exhibits, cultural events and concerts 4. The Spiral Ramp will get you to 10,000 steps easily; it is the only way to the top of the tower and spins 7 1/2 times around the Tower's hollow core. Believe me, you feel those twists as you climb. 5. The Bell Loft is situated above the Library Hall and two floors above the Trinity Church where the bells have rung for hundreds of years. 6. The Platform: once you climb the narrow stairs you are atop and can see all of Copenhagen's charms and Sweden. During the summer there is a kiosk that sells sweet treats 7. The Planetarium: shows the solar system I highly recommend visiting Rundetaarn. It is located in Norreport; beautiful shops and restaurants. Plus, it was raining so a good way to wait it out while taking in the sights. You walk up a gentle spiral to get a nice view of the city. Along the way, there are rooms you can stop in for art exhibitions, a view of the actual church (there was service going on when we were there), random alcoves, refreshments, and even the toilet. The place is clean and it wasn't overly crowded when we went on a weekday in the afternoon. Because of the gentler slope, it's friendly for all ages. The view isn't very high, but it's still pretty good! There are little "benches" along the way - in case you do need to rest or plan the next stop of your day. A good place to stop by to get a view of the city!

This is a truly strange tourist attraction. And, I use that term,"Tourist Attraction," lightly…read more It is said that this place is the home to many of those who live an alternative lifestyle in Copenhagen. They claim that this area is completely beyond the rules and the laws of Copenhagen. In some ways, that is pretty easy to see as the main street is lined with people selling weed and hash, which is still illegal in Denmark. Copenhagen is not Amsterdam. Though a bit sketchy, this city within a city is very well maintained. I am sure there is some other story going on here. ...One that we will never know. This being said, what you will find here is some of the best street art and graffiti that you will witness anywhere across Copenhagen. Of course, it is clearly stated all over the place, "No Photos." But, I'm guess that is more to keep the people dealing drugs safe and off the radar than anything else. One of the funny/interesting things I find about this location is that tour buses actually pull up to it. I don't know, maybe it's just me me, but if you are truly embracing an alternative lifestyle that all seems rather intrusive. Nonetheless, this is an interesting place. Even if all you do is look at the great street art, it is worth the visit.

So it's December and dark and I'm day-dreaming of long days and dock jumping at Islands Brygge…read more Not to stereotype or anything, but this is definitely where the beautiful Danes hang out during the summer the second it's above 18 degrees (celsius). The families tend to stay closest to the gated bathing areas (havnebadet), while the 20/30-somethings are in the middle near the "badebro" just after Kulturhuset. All areas are jam-packed on the warm summer afternoons, and by mid-August the ground is basically dirt and covered with cigarette buds, but it's still my all-time favorite place to spend a warm summer afternoon. Hourly dips in the canal (points for fanciest dives!) are an absolute must. Don't forget your beer, én-gangs-grill, and pølser, if you want the true Danish experience. Obviously the marshy land around was terraformed through massive military engineering, beginning in 1620, with the distinctive star shaped citadel and surrounding moats being complete sometime in the late 1600's. It's a working Danish army base with soldiers and guards. But they allow tourists to just walk around...if I didn't know see other tourists around, I would have felt very uncomfortable...like I was in a place I wasn't supposed to be. I came in from the south via the bridge (where vehicles would also come in, sharing the road with pedestrians). One can go up to the ridge and see around as well. I walked out through the front bridge, which had been blocked so only walkers could come in. There are a few artifacts inside the fort, representing the history of this place as a protector of this city during history.

Instead, as I came to find out, it was more like a park. First walking through the front gate, you are greeted by these two long rows of buildings that line the street. But, as you continue to walk around, that is all it really is. Nothing super exciting, and borderline boring. If you do visit, the main thing you should focus on is the walk along the walls. You get a nice view of the surrounding area. It is really cool to see the walls from on top, and you get to see the various fish in the moat surrounding the fort.
