Paris definitely does not have a craft beer culture. This is a real shame because there are many wonderful beers produced in France. But you would be hard pressed to find 95% of them in bars in Paris, even bars known for having good beer. One of your only options is going to Cave a Bulles and buying individual bottles of French beer. If Simon is not busy, you can easily chat with him for an hour about beer. He will help you choose a good variety of beers to bring home, ones that you are probably not going to find in the US. His English is excellent. And If you really want to make a friend, bring him a rare beer from the US (or elsewhere).

I showed up 15-20 minutes before closing, and I wish I had gone in sooner. Simon loves what he does and it's evident. My 2 biggest regrets were not bringing him a bottle from back home and not having a checked bag to bring the loads of Cantillon (that I wish I had bought) back to where I was staying in Nice. La Cave a Bulles will certainly be a staple for me whenever I visit Paris.

Within that small store, they carry a good selection of wines from the southwest of France, the Languedoc-Roussillon region, a selection of whiskeys from all over the world, even India and Japan, as well as crafted Parisian whiskeys, rums from the Caribbean, vodkas, calvados, and artisanal canned produce and air-dried sausages. The owner speaks some English and very helpful in answering questions and very knowledgeable in what he carries. And if the friendliness and openness of the staff is any indication I wouldn't be surprised if rum drinkers weren't the happiest spirit drinkers in the world. Seriously, you know how afficionados can be super snobs, especially when you have no clue what their talking about? Well at A Rhûm, the attitude is as warm, soothing and inviting as the spirits being served. When we walked in we were a bit overwhelmed with the endless options at first. It was a Saturday evening and the place was packed. Just as we were about to turn around and head out someone from the far corner of the boutique called to us and asked what we'd like to try. We told him we were looking for a disgetive at around 30E, and he poured us four different types at the little tasting station they have set up in the shop. His first choice, a Botran Reserve, was right on the money and at the right price. To say it's been a hit at our place is an understatement. Everyone who tastes it oohs and ahhs and can't believe how smooth and subtle the spirit is, not at all sweet and cloying as you would expect. No surprise that we're making a trip to A Rhum this weekend to replenish!
