Vern's Tavern: Local Musical Watering Hole Small, dark, filled with broken chairs from mosh pits past and the famous cymbal wall are all sights one can expect to see after climbing down the grungy flight of stair into the bar. This cosy rock and roll bar is a place where local musical talent can find refuge. Clint Pike, owner of Vern's Tavern has a simple approach to the musical talent he chooses to showcases, anyone and everyone. Came here with a couple of coworkers on a business trip because it looked like a fun, funky place…read moreto grab some food and a beer. Jackpot! Good music, nice bar and beer assortment, variety on the menu and wacky decor. Server was quick and helped us pick out what to try. The "bucket of bacon" appetizer was good, and the right amount for the 3 of us. I tried the traditional poutine and was a little disappointed as I thought it was a bit bland. Not sure if that's just how it is, or this place was a little off. Fun dinner, not expensive. They also have a crazy poutine challenge but our server wasn't clear on what you won if you finished it, so we passed. Fun place to check out if you get the chance!

The first thing you notice are the decorations that are all over the place that tells you this is Calgary . We were greeted very promptly by a pleasant gentleman who knew everything that was on the menu. my brother and i shared a buffalo chicken taquitos. i was concerned that this might be too spicy but it was just right . it had flavor but fire was not coming out of your mouth . As for the mains, i had smashburger with 2 patties and got waffle fries while my brother got the mac and cheese. which he says melted in his mouth and might have been the best mac and cheese he has had this year. Another thing make Leopold's stand out as it has tv every where. This is the first place that actually focussed on the Winter Olympics focussing on all the events. for those of you who don't know Calgary hosted the winter olympics in 1988 but you would not know it this week throughout the city. Not one sign or notice to tell you about. That said Leopolds is a place you can go after a long work week, listen to some country tunes watch sports and have a super meal. We may actually come back before i leave to go back to Ontario catch a certain Olympic mens hockey game Canada vs Finland in the semi final. This place is that good .

Border Crossing - Order upon arrival... no dip for the beef dip. The dog didn't need the extra salt, but maybe would have helped

I don't think I have been so disgusted in a LONG time!…read more A beef dip with no dip, as it was notified as already all over the order boxes by driver upon pick up. Beef Dip: A piece of bread with a couple of slices of chewy and grisly beef, NOTHING ELSE, not sauce or dip. Poutine: The poutine was undercooked, cheap fries in congealed gravy. Starving, I tried it and decided to pass and eat chocolate pretzels until dinner was ready. My partner walked through and asked for a bite as he was working and rushing... it went in the garbage... Tried to feed the sandwich to the dog, even he was unimpressed. To send out food like this is an utter embarrassment! Avoid this place at all costs. McDonalds would do better (and that IS an insult!) ** DoorDash photo of the sandwich didn't save to phone. It was the worst sandwich I have been presented, with bare bread and chewy, fatty, poorly sliced beef. Even the worst road food is WAY better **

Let's just say there's a general dinge in the air. Within that expansive general dinge, they have 10 VLTs, a jukebox, and a stage with a dance floor in front. Border Crossing offers a few nightly specials to coax the strays in. Come Friday and Saturday, live music is offered. Thursday night from 9pm - 1am they get a Karaoke Jam going. On Flames game days, they offer $3.25 pints and $9.75 jugs. This place is certainly not a destination pub, but if you're in the area and you're thirsty, it's there. Word to the wise, just like an actual border crossing, make sure you've got your story straight before making the trip - it'll just be easier that way.
