Vermouth is one of those things one acquires a taste for when living in Spain. I never thought I would love dry sherry as much as I do. My affection for Spanish plonk is renown. Vermuteria Lou is a typical place with the typical good values on drinks and tapas. It's location near the Metro makes it a great choice for when I'm visiting my friends in Gracia.

I think of all the tapas places we visited in Barcelona, this was the best of all. It's just a small spot at the bottom of the hill from Parc Guell on the way to the metro. Some of the menu was in English, but no one spoke it (or cared to do so.) The menu itself was useless. When I asked for some things, they led me inside to choose from the bar. There was a crowd of locals at the front counter and we sat at the outside tables. No one bothered us as we enjoyed some of their amazing chorizo, croquettes, and empanadas. I ordered a lot and we had a few rounds of wine. I didn't know all the prices and was worried about the bill, and by the end it was still less than 20 euros.

After visiting Parc Guell, we decided to lose ourself in small streets on the way to Sagrada familia, we arrived around Joanic station and found a nice local restaurant. Customers in this restaurant were all Catalans, some of them seemed to know very well all waiters. There wasn't really a menu option there, some boards indicated outside the special of the day but you could ordered anything really, you just had to point what you wanted on the counter. When you walked to the loo, you walked passed the kitchen where you could see it is an old women who cooked every single dishes for the whole restaurant, my friend and I wondered if she was not the wife or even the mum of the head waiter behind the bar. We had some exqueisada, cod has been marinated in lemon, it was served with cooked red pepper and tomatoes salad. This dish was amazing, fresh and light. I don't usually think about eating 'raw' cod but it was really nice. Pan con tomate was ok, not the best but it was free so you can't really complain for it. It had a little bit too much oil and not enough tomato taste. For the garlic they put the right amount on it. My friend had tuna empanadas while I was having a few croquetas. Those croquetas were very nice, homemade, there were a little bit creamy and full of ham. Our main dish at Vermeturia Lou was impressive, a massive plate of fries served with eggs, wonderful slice of Iberico ham and foie gras on top. For sure it wasn't the most healthy dish ever, but it was so good. A rich dish well deserved after 5 hours walking. I would recommend you share this dish. In the counter, there was some nice langoustines, unfortunately after the plato estrella, I was too full to have even one of them, such a shame. I really liked Vermeturia Lou restaurant. It was a small typical restaurant full of local people, like I was hoping to find in Barcelona. There was no extravagance, food was simple, good and well executed. Prices were very cheap considering the portion in the plate.

Authentic tasty tapas with quaint, fun atmosphere...local Barcelona vibe. Really enjoyed the tortillas y chorizo. Lot of options in a cute spot not too far from the Joanic metro stop. Bread with smashed tomatoes and olive oil was an added bonus. Go!

Food was delicious, drinks were cold and service was great! A nice stop in between Sagrada Familia and Güell Park.

Costa Coffee felt even more crowded than the huge landmark across the street. Both are packed with tourists. The baristas behind the counter were working their collective culata off and deserve props even though the line was nearly to the door. This just might be the most profitable Costa Coffee on the planet. I got a Chocolate-frosted Cronut and a Cappuccino to enjoy while relaxing on the couches outside looking up at Sagrada de Familia plus the steady stream of pedestrians and bicycles passing by. The coffe was fine. The cronut was ok. Both are worthy of 3 stars, but the location and view raise Costa Coffee to a solid choice whether you're early for your entry time or tired after leaving Sagrada Família.
