Today, in 90-degree heat and direct sunlight, four senior citizens--three women and one man,…read moreranging in age from 70 to 88--were waiting outside for the Spectrum store to open at 10:00 a.m. Staff members could clearly see us through the windows but chose not to unlock the doors a few minutes early so we could get out of the dangerous heat. After the store opened, I politely suggested to two employees, Hope and Ryan, that in the future it might be wise to allow elderly customers inside when weather conditions pose a health risk. Ryan explained that company policy does not allow it and said we should have left and come back later. I responded that this wasn't the humane thing to do, especially since prolonged exposure to extreme heat can quickly become a medical emergency for older adults. His response was that it would have been our responsibility, not Spectrum's. I understand businesses have policies, but good customer service also requires compassion and common sense. Refusing to help vulnerable customers avoid dangerous heat sends the message that policies matter more than people. I left disappointed by what I felt was a lack of empathy and concern for customer well-being.
