This is a new shop in De Courcy's Arcade (but the entrance is on Cresswell Lane). It's a massive shop, really well laid out and with some seriously amazing gifts - ranging from kids stuff (Sooty & Sweep hand puppets!), nice stationery, cute koala cushions and tshirts. There's quite a bit of niche stuff too, like Dr Who, Breaking Bad etc which is worth checking out if you're into that kind of thing. Prices are really reasonable and I have my eye on the large Kilner jug with a tap on it - I'm sure that's essential for an upcoming Yelp event, surely? This time I didn't buy anything but I will be scouting this place for all my present-buying needs.

Paper Plane is one of them, especially if you're looking for a gift (for yourself, or someone else). There's nice crafting kits, as well as lots of things for kids. A nice range of mugs, jewellery, wedding stationery, books, artwork, candles - typical gift shop supplies. There isn't much that falls into the realm of "tat" which is always a good sign. They had on display a Lisa Donati (formerly Psychopants) tea towel - "You will always find me in the kitchen at parties" which always makes me giggle, so obviously they're stocking local artists which is great to see. I'd recommend you spend a day of your weekend heading to check out some of the delights of Skirving Street and make sure that you leave plenty of time for a nosey around here! I was in looking for a little housewarming gift and card for a friend and loved having a nosey around while the woman working offered me helpful suggestions and showed me some of the new stuff they had in. They have a big range of stuff; from jams and fudge, to candles, prints, kids clothes/toys, lovely fabrics and cushions, bunting and some jewellery bits and bobs. But this doesn't quite do justice to what you'll find in this little gem. Stuffed full of prints, mugs, t-shirts and cards, mostly made by local artists and designers, this is a perfect place to pick up a gift that's unique and special. I popped in here on Saturday afternoon and, as is normally the case, I had nothing in mind I just fancied a browse. After thumbing through some prints and objet d'art I spotted an awesome yellow and white laser-cut image. This now looks totally at home in my living room. Be prepared to rummage a little when you come in - not in a jumble sale kinda way, it's actually part of the charm of this shop. The owner is happy to let you browse, pick things up and wander around. You won't be rushed and the staff won't try to up-sell. If your purchase is a gift, they'll even wrap it for you. Most of the items are pretty affordable, starting at a few pounds but for some bespoke items are a bit more expensive. And a handy wee 20% Yelp discount when you check in makes it all the more affordable. I've been to lots of shops in, say, London and Paris that are way more overtly stereotypical and crude with their tourist paraphernalia. Overall, it's a decent tourist shop, nothing is terribly embarrassing or poorly made, and although there are shops that do Scottish merchandise better, this is a good place for tourists.

Fifteen years ago Byres Road was full of individual wee shops like this; today it's all coffee emporiums and charity outlets. I discovered Owen Bissett when doing my Christmas shopping in December. It's not the sort of place that would normally attract me, but I was looking for a nice present for my sister, and their window display looked inviting, so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I made that decision. The place is a veritable Aladdin's Cave of jewellery, bijoux, craft wares, designer knick-knacks and generally precious things (preeeeccccciouuusssss!). I soon found a lovely bracelet and necklace combo that my sister was delighted with, and would probably have ended up spending a lot more than I wanted to had not common sense kicked in. There's such a wide range of really unusual things in here, it is ideal if you're looking for that 'special gift' or just want a thing of beauty for yourself. I think my favourite items were the glass bowl sculptures with the natural wood stands - these large thick glass works appear to have been melted and poured onto driftwood or tree-branch tripods, so that they have flowed into the perfect shape for the support. I have no idea what I would use one for (and I couldn't afford one anyway), they were just lovely pieces of craftsmanship. A definite thumbs-up for the most original and unusual shop in Hyndland Street, if not the entire West End. Check it out - you're sure to find something you like.

There's something here for all budgets, which is a bonus. I bought a gorgeous necklace for myself a while back that people always comment on, and it only cost £10. Regardless of price, you can be assured that whatever you buy will always be top quality. Owen's window displays are always eye-catching and well thought out; I defy you to walk past and not at least stop for a good look! Displays are changed regularly, which is a great way to showcase the wide range of what's on offer. I highly recommend liking the shop on Facebook too, as it's an extension of the window displays. The service is always fantastic, and everyone there is so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They'll point out things you might like or will leave you to browse the stock without being over-bearing. It's customer service done correctly, and it's refreshing to behold. It's a great place to go and treat yourself or a loved one, be it Christmas, birthdays or just for the sake of it.
