Finding vegan food on a business trip is always an effort. Vegelicious is closed Monday, so I went there today and tried their BBQ Po' Boy sandwich. Apparently this is "soul food", something I never tried, until today. It was very good and satisfying! The bread roll was just perfect, soft, fresh. FWIW, this sandwich pairs exceptionally well with cold beer. They are located in a residential area, so trust your GPS. The service the food and the atmosphere were all inviting and comfortable. The food was simply delicious and yummy. I ate everything even though I had to take some home. I got the Mac and cheese the collards and strawberry cake and everything was so yum. I will say though that the only issue I had was the gravel in the parking lot and it was difficult for me to maneuver because I am handicapped with mobility issues but it wasn't a big hindrance that I couldn't eat there. The kitchen, from all appearances, is commanded by a single overworked (and clearly talented) cook. The wait for the food was long. But then it arrived and just like that, time made sense again. The vegan BLT, served on a hoagie roll with a too-generous shot of house sauce and plant-based mayo, was good, if more about the bread and sauce than its coconut bacon flakes. The BBQ tofu, sticky with a thick housemade sauce and grilled to a caramelized edge, seems to be the clear crowd-pleaser here. It's backyard cookout quality--tangy, sweet, satisfying. Delicious vegan soul food!!! Vegan Soul It's not the type of food you think of when visiting Nashville but Vegelicious is a great alternative to the traditional if you are not vegetarian/vegan. I had the Soul Food Plate because it came with "Chick" plus the sides I would order at any Soul food place: Mac & cheese, collard greens and yams. It was definitely yummy (side note: Mac was good/okay but not great) To drink I had the Vegelicious Iced tea which I enjoyed because no one does iced tea like the South! And to end my meal I had the Blueberry Bread Pudding and I fell in Love!!! Words can't even describe how good it was!!! You just gotta taste it... Uber dropped us off at the listed address but the restaurant is located on the back side of the building. There is a small parking lot if u drive. Limited indoor seating but there is also outdoor seating under a tent. Not sure if that is only for take-out or if they provide outdoor service. The customer service was friendly!!! Vegan Soul Food?! Hell yes!! I'm in town for a work conference and I thought for sure I would be eating salads the whole time, so I was elated to see a vegan spot within walking distance of my hotel. I never get to enjoy soul food because it's always meat, so I'm so excited I get to indulge here. It's the cutest little spot. There's picnic table area outside with a tent to cover from elements if you want to dine outside, there's a pickup window, and a small dine-in area (5 little tables). The music playing is a vibe and immediately set me in a good mood. I ordered the Soul Chik Plate (no spice please ) and a house made sweet tea. The food came out pretty quickly and it smelled amazing!!! I dove right into the greens first. They were cooked perfectly and not too salty. The chikn was crisp on the outside and chewy in the center, the seasoning was just right, and the ranch dressing it came with was delicious (I don't normally like ranch vegan or not, but I was dipping the chikn and fries in it)! The steak fries had nice crisp edges with chewy center and again well seasoned. Just proves that you don't have to douse everything in spices because it's vegan...it can be enjoyed with regular seasonings. I saved the Mac n cheese for last, because duh, save the best for last. Good vegan Mac n cheese is hard to come by and usually full of all the fake crap. It was scrumptious and creamy and you can taste the nutritional yeast and tell they made it all from scratch. I also had to get dessert (to have later in the hotel). I asked Miss Bettina what her favorite was and she gave me a few options, and of course had to go with the carrot cake! I was planning to wait until later but seeing how it came out warm, I had to take a bite right away. The frosting is divine and the cake is moist and "buttery." I will be for sure enjoying every bite after dinner tonight. The place is clean, the staff is super friendly, and the food speaks for itself. If you're vegan, you have to stop by! I would come back every day to try everything on the menu if I lived here! If you're not vegan, do yourself a favor and stop in and treat yourself to some bomb Soul food!! I was so excited to see that there was a vegan version of Nashville hot chicken! This place is totally worth it, lots of free street parking when I went. The server was nice and let me swap fries for yams. Seasoned so well. The ranch was so creamy, I wasn't sure if it was vegan. My husband and I decided to eat inside and enjoy the lovely music, although their outdoor covered space also looked inviting. The sandwich was flavorful and when I asked about it they said they make their own seitan which explained why it was so good. We were so full we took a piece of their carrot cake home. The menu has several options that derive from African American culture. There was music to accommodate the soul vibe when you walk in. This restaurant is small and quaint on the inside, so large parties may be a problem. The service was nice and friendly. I noticed several people came in to pick up their to go orders. I commend them for offering vegan soul food because soul food has deep roots in being not the healthiest food to consume while being some of the best comfort food on earth. Well Vegelicious fell short on flavor. The greens, yams, and macaroni n cheese just missed the flavorful soul that grandma was able to impart into a dish. The bacon cheese burger was not bad, it was just pale to the palate especially to have some kind of bacon on it. Texture and flavor play a big part in what makes vegan food good or bad. First time trying this restaurant. Nice, small cafe. Ambiance was good with fun artwork on the walls. Clean. I asked for recommendations, and the cashier told me he wasn't vegan and could only recommend the one thing he has tried. I asked if the mango tea was a sweet tea, because I don't like southern sweet tea. He didn't know because he hasn't tried it. I ordered the "Not" Bacon Burger: House-made black bean patty, grilled onions, sautéed mushrooms, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, coconut bacon, veganaise, ketchup, mustard, on a bun. It came with thick cut fries, and I ordered a mango tea. Total: $24.92 Overall, I thought the flavor of the burger was good, but could have done without the coconut. Although it gave a needed texture component, the sweetness clashed with the other flavors. The burger quickly fell apart while eating, so I needed a fork to finish it. The mango tea was good, but felt $7 was a bit high. It did come with free refills though. The obvious point of comparison here is to the Southern V, another local vegan soul food spot. I also have been to a few restaurants in this vein elsewhere. I am not someone who would ever have been able to eat most of the non-vegan soul food, so this is where it's at for me. Vegelicious had some in-person dining, but they are crammed into a tiny shotgun house with only a couple of indoor tables. A the time of my visit, they appeared to be doing construction on a larger outdoor picnic area. I took one of the couple of tables they did have. The menu here is quite large, but I figured the combo platter with hot "chicken" would give me the best rounded meal. It took quite a while apparently because I got forgotten. Thankfully, I was not in a huge hurry, but just to be clear, it's good to come here and get a different vibe of the city than you'd get downtown, but calibrate expectations on ambiance and service accordingly. When my food did arrive, it was indeed a nice variety. I mixed all the different ingredients together. I don't like the greens much by themselves, but as an accent for mac and "cheese" or the sinus-clearing hot whatever-it-was, the flavor works much better. Some fries with what tasted like Old Bay rounded things out. I didn't think the flavors popped like what I got at Southern V, but this place did produce some worthy and interesting food, and I could easily imagine going back and ordering around. read more

Pineapple cake was worth going back for on its own. Strawberry cake, too. Cheesecake, was good, but just not the same(I'm not vegan, gimme a break). Ok--4 stars? We all pulled up this restaurant and figured it was a good sign. At first we couldn't find the place because it is a little hidden. OMG this is the best hidden vegan restaurant EVER.
