Organic by name, organic by nature, this place is positively brimming in organic goodness. Upon entering I found myself confronted with a rack of vegetables which I had a feeling were all locally sourced given their quite limited range (NOT a bad thing!). There is also a fruit section, but both of these racks are slightly overshadowed by the jars upon jars of exotic herbs, spices, pulses and grain (obscurity seemingly being the name of the game, I managed to find one jar labelled 'crocodile pops'). With ingredients like these no dish could ever be accused of being dull or unimaginative. Their clear containers and little shovels are just like those you'd find in a pick n' mix stall but I think you'd find a lot cause of tooth decay in these ones.
Rather less aesthetically pleasing are the shelves of industrial sized containers with taps on the end positioned in the corner of the shop. Never judge a book by it cover, these containers hold all sorts of exciting vinegars and oils as well as organic soap, shampoo, conditioner, washing machine liquid and dishwasher liquid which you would ecologically dispense into your own receptacle. I was seriously impressed!
To top it off the shop assistants exude a suitably cheery and healthy demeanour too. I overheard them giving delicious sounding vegan recipe tips to a customer.
Infact, there is so much enthusiasm for organic and vegan food in here that I began to fear, like the early Western explorers in China, that I might reek of meat or dairy products so made a quick and ashamed exit, one hand clamped over my mouth, the other desperately searching for some gum.
The only thing I'm not 100% sure about is the name of this shop, as you'll see from my photo it's got about 3 different titles plastered above the shop, but in an online directory it's called Vegan's Choice Grocery. If I'm wrong I do apologise! read more
