I am leaving one star because mr Veff is good at sharpening but has taken the liberty of dumping whatever is going on in his personal life onto me in the form of anger for basically no reason at all. his ability to patiently and respectfully deal with his clients was sadly lacking. As a dog groomer, I work very hard and spray my shears with a solvent, blow them out, and oil them after every groom. I admit that this time around there was an incident and they were in bad shape.. Well- mr Veff lectured me on keeping them clean before working on them as per usual. Then, upon picking them up, he lectured me again about cleaning them and keeping them fastened shut when not in use.. fine I've heard it before but I acquiesced.. ..he explained with muted anger and impatience, at a quicker pace of speaking than what is usual for him, that if I keep the blades fastened together, I can drop them and nothing will happen While they were fastened(after he sharpened them), He dropped them twice on a rubber mat on the table(to my shagrin as I hate to see them drop in any way shape or form) And then took the fastener off and dropped them again!- in the very way he was explaining will damage them(though he dropped them on rubber which he understood would not put them at risk of being damaged) I know he knows what he's doing, but still politely requested that he not drop my shears regardless of what surface he was dropping them onto and he became even more upset. In a nutshell: He shamed me again for the way I treat my own shears.. ..he belittled me, telling me at one point that hes been working at shears for longer than I've been born, that I don't even know what stress is and another time that I don't even know what abuse is(I guess he's been through enough crap to justify him treating his clients poorly?.. or maybe he is some kind of mind reader that knows everything I've been through?) .. he was even posturing aggressively and told me "don't push it!" Which was confusing to me- as I only wanted to take my shears and leave. I though for a second that he wanted to have a fist fight. .. and, pathetically, he told me that I will never find anyone to sharpen my shears as good as he, after I had made up my mind never to work with him again. Almost as if I'm he thought I'd change my mind and say "ok- I'm sorry, please continue to sharpen my shears for me and drop them whenever you want" I informed him that they are my shears and I can treat them however I want- and that they were not his to drop in any way.. and requested to pay and have my shears to end the transaction once and for all. For being such a tough guy who has done so much and dealt with so many more hardships than me, mr Veff has proven to be quite weak where it really counts.. and I wish him well- I will continue to work with the shear sharpeners in the area that can, and have, helped me IN A RESPECTFUL MANNER and do not need the disrespect or poor mastery of emotion that comes with Veff sharpening. read more

Recently I bought a Benchmade folder from a local pawn shop for a decent deal, but the blade was beyond dull that attempting to cut anything was more of a bludgeoning then slicing. I searched on Yelp and found Tom Veff who operates Veff Sharpening Service out of his garage behind his home. While he does sharpen everything from kitchen knives to gardening tools, I really wanted to see what he could do to my dull folder, along with a few of my personal collections. Also, apparently he installs something called the Veff serration on knives which is a wickedly effective serration and allows you to melt through tougher materials like hard leather, hemp and rope. I brought in a few of my folders. I was so blown away. He sharpens blades at a convex grind which leaves the knife extremely sharp and with a mirror edge that just looks gorgeous. The Veff serration is everything Tom Veff has claimed my folder just melts tougher materials now. Testing on thick cardboard was a joke. A few things: 1. Since this is a home shop, make sure you call and schedule before hand as he may not always be in 2. When he returns your knives, he gives you a bandaid. I laughed until I cut myself. Your ew knives will be really sharp. 3. Prices are beyond fair. I think I paid $8 per folder and maybe $5 per kitchen knife. read more

Or, like me, you Yelp "knife sharpening", and come across 2 stellar 5-star reviews for what looks to be the most dedicated and technically proficient blade sharpening dude in all the land. Had I seen this in the Yellow pages, I doubt I would have made the call/drive, but with two positive reviews, I knew I had struck gold. Mr. Veff has been buying, using, sharpening, and selling knives since he was a very young guy. He worked many years as a journeyman meat cutter, and he has owned Veff Sharpening Service for the past 20 years. He also designs knives for a local manufacturer and came up with a super effective style of serration that he calls his own. But what really matters, is that this guy gets your edges sharp, polished, and ready to slice. Kitchen knives, blades, shears, chainsaws, you name it. Anything with an edge can be honed down to a convex razor sharp slicing tool. For $12.75 I got a 6" Santoku knife, a 5" blade, a 5" serrated knife, and a 5" paring knife polished to a shiny sharpness (sharp enough to cut belt leather with only a small amount of pressure). It was done while I waited (you need to call ahead for sharpen-while-u-wait service), and in all, it took about 30 minutes. This is a CASH ONLY establishment that will sharpen your steel or sell you a great knife, all with a friendly and charming smile and a folksy, talkative banter. The 30 minutes I was there seemed like a mere flash in the pan. I left happy and with a free band-aid (stamped with a disclaimed that he bears no responsibility for any spilled blood). First let me say that I personally enjoy sharpening knives and many of my friends think my knives are about as sharp as it gets... Well... there is sharp and there is spooky magic sharp and Mr. Veff falls in the latter category. Not only are the edges he produces sharp enough to make the hair jump right off your arms in fear, but they have a strange burnished, mirror like finish that looks simply wicked. Talking to this man also gives you an insight into one of those people who have found their calling and not only enjoy what they do, but have turned it into an art form... and all this about as cheap as it comes... I had 4 kitchen knives and a hand made hunting knife done for $17.50 and I believe that they came out sharper and prettier looking than they have ever been. Tom Veff is *literally* as good as it gets. (and he's an insanely nice guy too) I thought I had a sharp knife, but the before/after comparison of what he did made my old blade seem like a children's toy. He also made a few recommended modifications to the opening mechanism, thumb studs and blade that, again, made my knife manufacturer look like amateurs. Why aren't all knives first approved by him before they're manufactured?! He's not just good, he's the best, probably hands down the best in the country, and he lives right here in Oregon City. I had a great time chatting with him while he sharpened my pocket knife, and learned a crazy amount about blades. It's clear that he's passionate about his craft, and not doing it just because it's a "job." Tom is an old-school artisan and runs a small local business worth supporting. He sharpened six kitchen knives for us, and the difference is like night and day. He also gave good advice about protecting the knives and keeping them sharper for longer. Call ahead to make sure he's open (regular hours are M-F 9-5 but vary somewhat) and see if he has time to sharpen while you wait. He took care of all of ours is under half an hour. I took my chef knives into Tom about a month ago. I had read all the reviews and was extremely impressed. So I had to try it for myself. Working in a professional kitchen, sometimes your knives may be left out for other employees to openly use them and they won't treat your knives all well as you would. Let's talk knife sharpening. Sharp knives are one of the kitchen's unsung joys. I didn't care much about knives until I actually got nice knives. That is when I began to ENJOY cooking. My mother bought me 3 Global Knives and the suckers were finger slicing sharp right out of the package. They made me nervous, but I liked it. Fast forward a year and they perform more like butter knives. So, I do a few google searches for professional knife sharpening and find TOM VEFF! Not only does this man knows sharp knives, he is a total treat to meet and chat with. He has all sorts of witty quotes and what-nots posted about in his very tidy workshop. I learned more about knives in 30 minutes (I waited while he sharpened) than I did in 1 year of Home Ec. in High School. I really want to share all the tid bits right here and now, but I think you should gather up your knives and make the 30 minute trip to Oregon City (it's so worth it) and find out for yourself. Call ahead if you want to wait while he sharpens or you can drop off in his drop-box. He does it all, kitchen knives, processor blades, chainsaws, pocket knives, hedge trimmers, scissors (lots more listed on his website)... if it has a blade he will sharpen it. I recently took five high-quality, but neglected Wusthof kitchen knives to Veff Sharpening. I left with the sharpest edges these knives had ever seen. The edges had a nice polish as well. I had a great chat with Tom (the owner) about all things knife related. He showed me his Shun collection and had an impressive display of kitchen, hunting, boning and fishing knives. Surprisingly, he had many for sale at reasonable prices too. If you need a knife of any kind and want the most knowledgeable salesman you could ever hope for, Tom is your guy. He designs knives for Kershaw and really knows his stuff. He's at the top of his craft. I was also given some instruction on how to use a honing steel properly, a little history on the business (over 20 years!) and advice on knife storage and materials. He sharpened everything while I waited and told me exactly what he would be doing. Five knives took about 25 minutes. Prices were great. .50 per inch for regular and .75 per inch for serrated. I had a dull SOG navy seal fixed blade knife with a chip on the edge. Found Veff on the internet and drove over after talking to Tom on the phone. It is hard to put into words how sharp really sharp is because until you experience it, you have no frame of reference. What I can say is the first time my wife sliced potatoes and cheese the response was OMG. When I cut meat then used our steak knives to then eat it another OMG experience. I just wish I would have taken our knives to him sooner. They were in very poor shape- now they are slicing and dicing anything and everything we shove onto a cutting board. Such an AMAZING job on some craptastic knives that I thought were doomed for the garbage cuz not even Goodwill would have taken these junkie knives. Now they work like magic.
