Quick and easy service at your front door. Knives haven't been that sharp since we bought them.

Are your knives so dull they'll hardly dice an onion, much less shave thin slices off a tomato? If so, you need to meet Woody, pronto. He'll lovingly fix up your knives using the Bob Kramer (official American knife god) method, and he'll give you a really thorough lesson in how to maintain those lovely edges once they're restored - one that actually is practical and does not refer to magical angles you'll never achieve. You will go home and find things to chop up even if you did eat dinner out somewhere, because he'll have you totally excited about knives. He works at the Oregon Culinary Institute, is a wonderful guy, and seriously, what he does to your sorry old knives will make you sad you didn't meet him sooner. He is mobile, so if you have enough knives to be whipped back into shape, he will come to you in the Portland metro area, or he does in-store shindigs at Kitchen Kaboodle sometimes on weekends, or you can go visit him at OCI. Stop reading. Wrap up those knives, throw out that nasty electric knife sharpener, and make an appointment with Woody!

Additionally, everyone working at the store is so nice! They seem genuinely happy to help problem solve or explain. A few years ago the incoming waterline to my house was broken on the Friday afternoon before Christmas - we had to turn the water off at the street. Unfortunately getting a plumber to come out was not going to be feasible and we didn't want to go without water all weekend. We popped on down to Ace with some pictures and someone helped us pick out a solution that would allow us to have our water on until a plumber could come out. In fact, we were going to purchase extra parts and return what we didn't need later, but the guy helping us was doing his best to trim down our order so it was a cheap as possible (I guess to help save money for Christmas). We actually live a lot closer to the Hillsboro Ace, but I prefer to go out of my way to this location.

This store carries all the typical items found at hardware stores including paint, plumbing and electrical merchandise in addition to lawn and garden. With a few exceptions, the employees are all knowledgeable and welcoming. There are two downsides to shopping here. The prices are a bit higher than their competitors and they have somewhat limited hours of operation, closing early and only open 12-5 on Sunday. But overall it's a nice local store.

Please appreciate this review as a very positive review for a business that deserves your business…read more I am an amateur home cook that cooks a lot because my wife has a lot of food allergies. I have been looking for knife sharpening better than William Sonoma since we moved back to Portland and have had a hard time finding a spot. I saw there was another location in Washington Square to sharpen knives and I decided I'd check it out. I read a lot of bad reviews but thought I'd give it a go. Stopped by on a Sunday and said "do you sharpen kitchen knives / repair?" (I have a shun 8 inch that had a large chunk out of it that multiple places refused to repair). The response I got was "Yes but let us follow up in regards to the repair / write your contact on this post it and we will follow up." Two weeks went by and I didn't have a message or note / call regarding an update. I decided to go stop in and lo and behold they were done including the major knife repair. This was a thin Japanese knife completely shaved down to perfection. The other knives - precise. Cost was insanely reasonable but the care was over the top. In my experience working with small businesses, the passion is in the craft. Yes everyone likes Amazon up to the date updates but I appreciate the quality and Highlander provides quality / craft.
