Not Your Typical Mexican Restaurant I've eaten my share of Mexican food, and frankly, I'm bored with it. So when my wife suggested Vecindad in Tacoma, I bit my tongue and went along with it just to appease her. Glad I did. This place was excellent, and had some interesting choices. First up, we ordered guacamole as a starter. So what, you say? Every Mexican restaurant offers that. Yeah but have you ever had the guac served in the shape of a round cake ring, accompanied by whole tortilla chips? The presentation felt upscale, even though the price was reasonable. And the guac was very good. My wife then ordered their famous Tacos Don Ramón, made from ribeye steak and melted asadero cheese. These used to be prepared and served tableside, until some local government agency ordered them to stop making it that way. The waitress told us they're modeled after the Michelin-star rated tacos from a well-known Mexico City taquería called El Califa de León. These were delicious, and unlike any tacos I've ever had. I ordered their short ribs entrée, an item I've never seen on the menu of any Mexican restaurant. The ribs had a fantastic char, with a tasty slightly fatty flavor, and a portion size that felt like a very good value. Also, the beans/frijoles accompanying the short ribs were puréed, making them another item I've never seen served in that fashion at a Mexican place. They were also flavorful and perfectly complemented the short ribs. Even though we live about 30 minutes away, we're definitely planning on going back to Vecindad. Points for cute decor and good customer service, but the food was not great. I ordered an horchata and the tacos a la brasa (two pastor, one asada). The horchata came prepackaged, meaning in a plastic cup with plastic seal that you have to break with the straw. It was good. The al pastor meat was the better of the two, it tasted quite a bit of pineapple but nothing else and the meat was cooked but there was no char. The asada was drenched in jugo maggi, don't know if they marinate it or the cook just sprinkled the jugo maggi on the meat as it cooked but it was off putting, again the meat was just cooked probably on a griddle that wasn't hot enough and/or too crowded so the meats just kind of boil on the plancha. The tortilla was nice and charred, I liked that and the beans were tasty, the tiny bit of red salsa they give you with the tacos was ok. I didn't finish my meal which was almost $18 for the 3 tacos. Overall it was a disappointing first impression, hoping it was just a fluke. read more

Our waitress was so warm and nice, and the food is definitely worth it. Each dish we ordered was great, albeit a bit pricey, especially the tacos, but honestly, if you're willing to pay for Asadero prices, you're definitely getting your money's worth here. Entree was salsa verde with carnitas it came with house made tortillas. My spouse had the Tacos à la brasa. The salsa chile was good but I do prefer a bit more spice but the dish was very tasty. Vecinidad de Seattle is a step up from the usual Mexican restaurants in the quality and level of the preparation. Everything here is just a little bit more interesting than in your average place. It's not really a fancy slow-food kind of place, but it's closer than most Mexican restaurants you'll visit. They did an excellent job with the interior, and a third of the floor space is dedicated to a mock up of the set of the "El Chavo del Ocho", and you can watch Don Ramon getting slapped by Doña Florinda on the television as you enjoy your meal. Service is attentive and knowledgeable about the food and the menu. The appetizers are excellent: The taquitos were the biggest hit, and be warned that the stuffed Jalapeños were full on burners and not for the meek (seeds are not removed). It would have been even better had they'd been a little more roasted, but I'd definitely order them again. Every one of the plates I've tried: the Tlayuda, the Tortilla Soup, Tongue in Salsa Verde, and especially the Torta de Chilaquiles were excellent. The Torta was my favorite, from its crusty loaf that was grilled first, then filled with chilaquiles, eggs, and eggs, and chorizo. I'm going to have a hard time not ordering it every time I go. The menu was changed between my last two trips, and the current menu is now on a spiral ring binder as opposed to the paper menu that was given before. The new menu mirrors the online menu. Gone is the lengua in salsa verde and the pozole. Descansa en paz! It's a little more expensive, as noted before by others, but you're getting a bigger bang for your buck in taste and quality. If you're not interested in the quality and care put into your food, then take a right out of the parking lot, and then take the first left, and you'll find that there's a Taco Bell with your name on it just a mile away. read more

I absolutely love Vecindad de Seattle. The food is consistently delicious, and the atmosphere is wonderful -- it truly feels like you're sitting in a cozy little café somewhere in Mexico. Everything about the space is warm and intentional. I will say, it's definitely on the more expensive side, so my friends and I usually save it for special occasions or the occasional treat. I do wish it were a bit more affordable because I'd be here all the time if I could. That said, the quality absolutely shows. The coffee deserves its own moment -- it's incredible. Honestly, I have dreams about it. It's that good. The servers here are also wonderful. I feel like I often get the same server when I come in, and she's always fantastic. I love the aesthetics of the restaurant too. The flatware and dishes feel authentic, like they were brought straight from Mexico, and I really appreciate the traditional water jugs left on the tables -- such a thoughtful touch. The food itself is always impeccable. I genuinely haven't tried a single thing here that I didn't like. I haven't had the chance to try their bread or fresh-squeezed juices yet, but I have tried the pancakes, and they are hands down some of the best pancakes I've ever had in my life. At first glance, they almost seem out of place on the menu, but trust me -- even if you just order them for the table to share, they are unreal. Went here for brunch with a friend and ordered the surf and turf tacos along with the porterhouse. I also tried the café de olla -- it was decent, though lighter on cinnamon than I expected and not quite warm enough, but it did come in a charming cup. The portions are huge. I liked the grilled shrimp on the taco, but the steak underneath was overcooked and dry, which made it pretty bland. The beans were standard and the sauces were just okay. My friend thought the steak was fine, and we both ended up full after eating only about half our plates. Overall, it didn't leave much of an impression. The service was quick and there was no wait. There were so many interesting dishes to choose from including the ribeye tacos that looked amazing. However I went with the Al Pastor that came cooked in half a pineapple! Outstanding! We're out looking for Mexican food from Gig Harbor to Tacoma and just drove around and found it on Google. We had never been there and what a pleasant surprise oh my gosh, we got there at the right time because while we were waiting for a table, the line was getting longer... The decor is adorable and it replicates an old tv show apparently.. super cute inside! It seemed relatively clean. The bathrooms were nice and the people that worked there were very helpful and welcoming. Two of us had the three street taco plate which you can choose which tacos you would like and it came with the most delicious refried beans and some salsas; neither of us finished our food. We took half of it back because it was such a generous serving. One person in our group got a Carne Asada plate, it was huge! I would say the pricing is pretty fair. It's not cheap but you get what you pay for, it is very authentic and delicious and you get a generous portion. I would say two people can share a plate. We did get the best appetizer. In fact we thought it was the best thing out of all of our food and we will be back just for that. For the life of me, I can't remember what it was called, but it was something to do with frijoles, they were whole beans and they looked to be Peruvian beans, with a creamy broth with fresh cut chorizo on top and a huge mound of chopped Carne Asada. It came with five tostada shells, we broke them up and use them for chips to eat with the beans. It was a huge portion. It was enough for all three of us for an appetizer, but then we had a hard time eating our food. the music is loud, but we really enjoyed it. We felt like we were somewhere in Mexico. Everyone was in such a good mood. The tables were full and everybody had a great vibe. We did not drink any alcohol so I can't say how good the drink drinks were, but the pictures looked delicious and servers walked by with drinks and they looked so good! I'm so excited we found this place. It is so authentic and we absolutely loved it. The only thing I will say is I can't believe the Michelada is $14.50. I think that is way overpriced. They are usually about $8-$10 at most restaurants. I wanted to try one. It is my favorite cocktail, but there's no way I can pay twice the price for one. I love the lively atmosphere. We were excited to give this place a try and it didn't let us down. We are also excited to come back and try their brunch menu. We went here with some friends and everyone ordered a main dish that they were happy with. We also started with the Guacamole, which was excellent! Other things that we tried were the Carne Asada, Taquitos, Macho Burrito, and the Tacos Asada. Everything was delicious. We also tried their Churros, which were great. I wish I took more photos of how unique and vibrant and colorful the interior of this location is because it was beautiful and made me feel like I was transported to Mexico. Service was top tier. Absolutely disgusting experience. My partner and I drove 2 1/2 hours to try this restaurant, only to be treated like we were invisible. We waited 45 minutes and never got seated, despite there being multiple empty tables available. Meanwhile, I watched white American customers walk in after us and get seated immediately while we continued to be ignored. To add insult to injury, you conveniently waited until we had already driven away to call and say a table was "ready." Really? After 45 minutes and several empty tables? The timing was beyond suspicious and frankly insulting. I don't know if it was poor management, incompetence, or blatant discrimination, but I know what I saw. Customers should never be made to feel like they're less deserving of service because of who they are or what they look like. If you treat some customers with urgency and hospitality while others are left waiting and overlooked, don't be surprised when people speak up about it. We drove 2 1/2 hours to support your business, and instead, we left feeling disrespected and unwelcome. Needless to say, we won't be back, and I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone waste their time making a special trip just to be treated as though they don't matter. read more

Theyve really spent a lot of time trying to capture the flair of a family restaurant in Mexico. I had the two ribeye cooked table side. My wife had the 3 asada tacos. The whole experience was very relaxed. Prices were good. Our female host I suspect was the owner. She came to our table and answered all of our questions expertly.
