It's not just a creative name folks, I truly believe this is Bondi's best seafood. And apparently…read moreso does the rest of the world as more often than not, there's a sign on the door at the end of the evening noting that certain fish (sometimes even the entire stock) is sold out. Whether you're grabbing something fresh and practically flopping to take home and prepare yourself, or planning to sit at their outward facing bar (overlooking the glamorous North Bondi bus terminal) and devour some freshly grilled, battered and fried, or sashimi'ed and sushi-rolled fish, you really can't go wrong. The menu is continually changing with whatever's fresh and they do a damn good job of preparing it with as little fuss and flash as possible to let the beautiful flavour of the fish speak for itself. My advice? Try whatever roll they have on special. Check out my photos and you'll understand why.

Bondi's Best cooks up a smart fish and chip. Restaurant quality meals from the sea, offered up in a casual place. There are lean and light options like grilled salmon and steamed greens, sleek looking sushi dishes, plus the classic salty battered fish and chips. The batter is gorgeously light, like a Japanese tempura. Stylings are casual and breezy, and the view of Bondi beach is bliss. Summer Sundays should be spent right here. BB has it all

We shared the sashimi appetizer, which was very fresh and tasty. The pieces were not particularly large, so don't expect it to fill you up. My niece had fish and chips, and really enjoyed it. For my main, I had the barramundi and chose the miso butter with it. The barramundi is described on the menu as "200g," which comes to more than 7 ounces. Cooked, it felt like a small portion, particularly because the plate didn't come with much else. Judged by the food and ambiance, I'd give this four stars. What soured the meal for us was our experience at the end with the waiter. My niece had spent the semester abroad in Australia and I was visiting her. She had explained to me that tipping was not a usual thing in Australia. I also learned that from my hotel desk clerk when I asked how I would change some currency for tips (e.g., for the chambermaid etc.). The desk clerk told me outright that people didn't tip in Australia. So when the check came at North Bondi, I was surprised to see options on the credit card machine for 10%, 15%, and 20% gratuity, although there was also an option for no tip. Puzzled, I turned to my niece, who picked "no tip." After that, the waiter questioned us, asking if we had had a problem with the meal or the service (which is entirely what I would have expected from a NY waiter who had been stiffed on a tip, but not what I expected in Australia). Then he practically threw the receipt on the table. Maybe North Bondi Fish gets a lot of American tourists who tip as if they were back home. (And I definitely would have tipped in the U.S. -- service was totally fine.) Under the circumstances, the waiter's attitude at the end was an unpleasant surprise. (And as a result, I ended up tipping 5% at every restaurant in Australia thereafter.)

Inside you have a bar with informal bar tables with a great view over the deck and harbour. It also has a dining area that is slightly a little more formal (tables are set) the whole place is a relaxed atmosphere. Considering it is upmarket Double Bay, the wine list offers inexpensive choices and it has a great pub-style menu. Even though it is summer I had the seafood chowder and it was to die for. Simply amazing and must say I will be back for more. The bread roll was fresh and served warm with real butter. A glass of sparkling mineral water topped it off nicely.

You walk through the doors and directly ahead of you is the heart of this place, a front desk manned by someone who could possibly have been the dunce in her hospitality class - no joke, she was a real piece of work (but more about her later). To your right is the kitchen, the bathrooms and what looked like offices of some sort (this is a sailing club after all). To your left is where all the money is - turn here and head for the deck. As you pass the bar to your left, be sure to stop and chat to the exceptional barmen and have them mix up a cocktail for you. Sneak in a mandatory scan of the folk eating on your right as you step out onto the deck, and what a deck it is !!! Take it in kids, take in that view and just be. There are only 6 or 7 tables out there so there may be a little argy bargy to grab a table but once seated, be prepared to grow some roots. Look through their bar menu and head back in to order at the front desk (remember? the front desk manned by the soup nazi herself?). Make sure you are 100% sure of what you want to order otherwise you WILL be made to feel like you have all of 10secs to order before the buzzer goes off and you lose the game !!! After copping a mouthful from her (how dare i ask her what came with some of the dishes), I settled on the chicken salad - the chicken was grilled to perfection and the salad was super crisp and sooo refreshing - spot on for a warm summer afternoon. if you're umming and ahhing about this place - don't - just go, its as simple as that.
