Getting assigned to a tutor that had availability took over two weeks. Scheduling is complicated and even though I requested sessions up to two months out, they were never confirmed until the night before or morning of, often changing shortly before the scheduled time. The tutor was not helpful, only providing generic tips and tutoring. Nothing was tailored for my child unless I asked for it. Nothing was assigned to be worked on between sessions. It was only when we asked were we told we could work on some assessments if we wanted. Even then, we had to ask to go over them and discuss what was missed. My child's scores actually went down after 3 months of tutoring. He gained nothing from this experience. Would not recommend. read more

We gave Varsity Tutors a chance to assist my teenage daughter with some help prepare for her final exam in AP Chemistry. We signed up for 4-1 hour sessions at $329 which would put her last session about a week before finals. I noticed an additional charge to my account today which was not only a surprise but it was $40 dollars more than the original payment for the 4 sessions. I reached out to Varsity Tutors and was told that the tutor had scheduled 4 - 1.5 hour sessions so it was an additional charge to cover that time. Let me explain that my daughter is the one who scheduled with her tutor around my daughters schedule so I wasn't involved with that. So the tutor or someone within Varsity Tutors scheduled the additional time without our consent and my daughter just ran with it. I then asked if I was placed on a reoccurring plan and she wouldn't give me an answer and that I would have to call customer service to ask that question. I called the toll free number and and pressed the corresponding numbers for account changes department. I then was on the call with a young lady who told me I was on a reoccurring account and when I asked for cancelation, I was given the run around and even guilt tripped into believing I was letting my daughter down for not continuing the sessions. I told them she is a straight A student in advanced classes and we just wanted to help her prepare for the chemistry final. I finally got them to cancel my reoccurring membership but was informed that my recent payment was not refundable and that I could get summer sessions scheduled but they don't refund the money. My daughter enjoyed her tutor and I could have given them a better rating but given the bait and switch from the gentleman we initially spoke with (who never mentioned we would have a reoccurring account or their cancelation policy) and the non refundable charge they took. I can not recommend Varsity Tutors and would give them 0 stars if I could. Beware, if this is your first time looking into tutors be careful what you might get from Varsity Tutors unethical practice and the money you may pay. read more

This organization is very dysfunctional and lacks organization. I was scheduled for a 12:45 pm call. This was a consultation to see if I would hire them i waited for their call, nothing. At 1:07 pm, they call me late (see screenshot). They text me to reschedule for 8:30 pm. This time I text them and let them know I'm waiting for their call. The additional screenshots attached tell the story. I find it interesting they have time for text messages but not the phone conversation. I would not hire them for your tutoring needs. Its important to keep commitments. This was very disappointing. read more

Terrible! Do NOT waste your money with this program. I paid for 1on 1 tutoring and group classes. The 1 on 1 tutor was meh. So, I added an online class. It was a mess. I was told my child was enrolled in a session with 4 other students. 14 students logged in to the session. I called to ask about it. I was told to enroll in a new session. We did. My child logged in and there were 29 students enrolled in the class. The tutor says we are going to read a passage. 1 student questions this and says the SAT is digital and no passages. The tutor replies ok let me find something else to do. She then starts giving the students tips that are available to everyone on-line. Find somewhere else to spend your money. read more

I signed my daughter up for one eight session one month before her SAT test. I made it very clear that I just needed the 18 sessions since we were only four weeks before her test. I was charged another almost $600 a week after her test. When I contacted them, they would only stop taking payments the following month and refused to give me the $600 back for this month even though she is not using it. Very unfortunate since the tutor was great! I will not be recommending to anyone and will be disputing with my bank. read more

I have been or my daughter has been a client of Varsity Tutors for a few years now. I continue to use them because I am totally impressed by the overall experience. This is my 1st Yelp review because prior to this experience I was just impressed I am now blown away and so puffed up with excitement! So far Varsity Tutors has been amazing! Response time is great, his tutor is wonderful at answering questions and keeping the session moving, and the online platform is very easy to use. I love being able to watch the videos after the session to see what he did and having them as a resource for him to review. Our tutor usually responds to emails within minutes and the company is great with customer service. We couldn't be more pleased! Highly recommend!! read more

BE CAREFUL OF THIS COMPANY: They IGNORED my specific requests made when I contacted "Ruth" this past Sunday. I SPECIFICALLY asked for a tutor who would do ISEE prep and who would concentrate on math and science. I was told the first session would be an evaluation by the tutor to find the areas my daughter needed to concentrate on over the next few weeks for test prep. Not only did we get a tutor who DID NOT do any of that, but she had no idea how to tutor for math. She WAS ON HER PHONE during the session looking things up. And, she was a kindergarten teacher! Not even middle school or high school. Kindergarten, who was supposed to be a "specialist" in ISEE testing and in math and science! She did not even know the formula for finding the area of a triangle. After just ONE SESSION, my daughter is WORSE OFF now than when we started. And now, they are telling me I am "ineligible for a refund." BECARFUL if you are considering this company to help your children in any way!!! read more

Varsity was informed about the specific problem I needed help with. Tutor did not understand the problem, and was unable to execute the task or teach it. I lost track of time since, and when they sent an email for more business, I recalled I was due a refund. They denied it because one must make the claim within 30 days. Varsity Tutors is great! I was struggling with physics in my first year of college and paying for Varsity Tutors was the best decision that I made. I had two tutors simply because I needed a lot of availability, but that's usually not necessary. My tutors, Dr. Om and Dr. Greg, were each amazing in their own right. Both of their teaching styles were effective for me and helped me go from failing to a B! The tutors are well-educated in their subjects and really care about seeing you succeed. Customer service is amazing, anytime you call or have a question they answer with a good attitude and quickly find a solution. Our daughter met with Sai over a period of several months to prepare for her SAT/ACT tests. We found Varsity to be very easy to deal with from the initial sign-up, scheduling tutoring sessions, customer service, and flexibility. Sessions were at our house and were very helpful. Sai had a lot of tips on how to approach sections and insight into the test that he shared with her, and each session was built around what she felt like she needed to concentrate on that day. He also gave her a lot of practice tests to do on her own time. We felt like the one-on-one sessions worked better than a group class (which we did for our older son) as time wasn't spent covering things already mastered. read more

My daughter had a good experience with Varsity Tutors. I didn't think she would care for the online tutoring service vs in person sessions, but she really like it. After each session, her tutor would write a summary of the session with recommendations/links to address areas that needed extra attention. The tutor was very reliable and if she needed to change a scheduled session, she notified me in advance with possible dates. Overall, it was a positive experience for my daughter. read more

We moved from California to Texas summer 2015. I knew we needed a tutor for my son who struggled for the last school year under the common core curriculum. He had ended the last school year with a D in math and very frustrated. During the summer and the first month of school for the 2015/2016 year, we started him with a tutor at Varsity Tutors. Our first tutor was amazing. He was great with my 11 yr old and My son felt more prepared to take on a new school year. Our first tutor had some personal things going on that caused us to change tutors. While we missed the first tutor, we have been so pleased with our second tutor, Goke. Goke has been perfect for our son. He has done an amazing job making math easy. He is able to explain, simply, multiple ways to do a problem. Along with teaching my son math, Goke would also praise him throughout the session when my son did well. Goke would also take time to know what my son is interested in, like basketball. This level of teaching and interest in who my son is and what he is interested in, has made my son look forward to tutoring. Varsity tutors is great at matching up kids with the right teacher. They listened to what we needed and how we have struggled and found us a teacher that would be perfect. We feel very lucky to have found Varsity tutors and even luckier to have had Goke as our teacher. My son ended last school year with a D and now has an 88% in math. His teacher said he would have an A if he turned in all his homework.... So, big improvement! read more
