Anyone with a pair of scissors can cut hair, but it takes passion and talent to become a hair stylist. I have had my hair cut and styled many times, but never on Madison Avenue. Just like everything else on Madison Ave, you don't know what you're missing until you have tried the best. I never review a salon/haircut until I've had a chance to go home, wash the products out, and style it myself. That is the true test of a killer haircut. Sure, the stylist can make it look like I walked off of a movie set.... But, can I do it the next morning? My hair is very fine, which makes it tough to style. It grows incredibly quickly, too. The moment I've found a haircut that I can live with, it grows out and looks straggly again. My stylist, Yann, took the time to analyze every natural curve and wave in my hair, the depth of my part, how long since my last haircut, all to plan for what the cut would look like as it grows. That, my friends, is attention to detail. He even showed me how to angle my part halfway down my head to naturally give the appearance of more volume and soften the deep line down the middle. Simple, but genius. No one has ever suggested that before. For the cut, Yann had me stand, flip my head over, lean back. All the while, explaining and teaching. BONUS: Yann teaches hair styling. So even though I won't be making a career change any time soon, I received a complimentary lesson in hair maintenance. He was also very good about showing me what products he was using, such as a texture spray. I immediately stopped on the way home to pick up some of this magic spray to allow me to style my super soft locks. The layers he put in are positioned perfectly, so that on the days that I don't make the effort to style it at all, they tuck neatly behind my ears. Easy, effortless, but so carefully planned out. The entire time that I was in his chair, Yann made me feel like my haircut was the most important thing going on in that salon. For those few minutes, I was the most important thing on Madison Avenue. I've now had a few days now to play with it. Even air drying, with no products whatsoever, it looks great. "Yes, I'll have a bob cut, with it just below my chin, and make it short enough in the back that you need to buzz it a little." And then, let the hacking begin!! My fellow Yelpers - this is a no no; then, Varin came along, and opened my eyes as to what a REAL hair raising experience is really all about. I was tired of my exhausted pony tail, so I booked a cut and blow dry. Philippe booked my appointment with Yann, who is not only highly knowledgeable, and a hair care guru, he was pleasant, a great listener to what my overall "vision" was, and made the appointment, well, fun! Yann: "You have beautiful thick hair! It's so healthy!" I have usually heard this: "Your hair is SOO thick! Do you want to thin this out??" Yann and I sat together, for a good 15 minutes, as to how I usually care for my hair, what "would make me happy" from this visit, and looked through ideas on pinterest.com so as to better explain what I can expect. I have NEVER, ever, been spoken to like this about my hair -EVER! This part I think is really crucial, and many places fall into the trend of giving you whatever you want, despite the fact that it might not suit your face. It was really valuable. Then, we got to the fun part of cutting, and styling, and then he would explain what he was trying to do, and how I could maintain the look afterwards. Again, all valuable information that is rarely ever shared unless you pull teeth, or pester. My hair, when left to air dry, is naturally with a wave, so Yann explained how to play it up, or keep it professional. After the gentle, and French way to layer, and then angles in the front to frame my face, Yann as he blew out my hair explained what not to do - always helpful! The results were beautiful and amazing! My hair style looks like I own it (at least that's what my boyfriend said) and I couldn't have been happier! So let's start off by talking about actually getting here. If I hadn't been walking with somebody who knew exactly where they were going, I would have gotten completely lost. The salon is on the second floor of a building. It's not something you can walk by and look right through the window - unless you're across the street viewing in. You have to ring the Varin doorbell to actually get into the building. Then, you walk up a flight of stairs and you finally arrive. The salon is very cute. I love the main focus of the place which is the big window. It has so much natural light inside which I think helps for a place like this. Varin was very well put together as far as color/decor. I got highlights in my hair. Tia was the beautician who worked on my hair. I thought it was very comforting in a way that she had explained what she thought would be best, and asked about the background of my hair, what products I used and so on. I like it a lot because that makes customers get a feeling as if they know what they're doing. My hair came out wonderful, I loved the outcome and she did a fantastic job. The salon provides robes so you don't mess up your shirt, and the cutest changing room in the back of the salon. I thought the staff was so friendly and seemed like they made a good team. Varin offers a variety of drinks during your stay, from water to wine. They also have numerous magazines and iPads magnetized to the wall for customer entertainment. I felt comfortable while I was there. The downfall of the salon that I didn't like about it is the shampoo area. On the wall, there is nothing to look at. No wall hangings or even TV? I think they should fill the wall with something because it's quite boring. Even a TV displaying their work would be a really neat way to advertise or give customers inspiration. Another thing I didn't like about the salon was the chairs, where your feet sit is attached to the chair awkwardly and if you don't be careful getting up, you could seriously trip and hurt yourself. The girl who was working on my hair forewarned me every time I had got up, which I'm glad she did or else I would have tripped over it. Anyone who reads my reviews knows I love to talk about the bathrooms. They only have one toilet. It was spacious and pretty inside, full of black tile. It was neat and tidy, so I give them a positive review on that! I would recommend coming here. So recap, I love the fact that the worker was informative about her work. Friendly and was able to keep a conversation with me while I was there. I love the atmosphere of it all, and being a design major I love the set up and placement of everything. So I found out about this salon by when their colorist, Brittany, invited me to get some services done and suggested I Yelp about it if I was happy with my experience and the results. I asked if I could invite a friend so also get hair styled as well and they were more than gracious when they accommodated us both on the same night. Upon entering I was greeted by Phillipe who along with Candace got me into a black robe, comfy chair a glass of water in hand and I began a hair consultation with Teresa. I already knew going in that I wanted some sort of balayage and ombre work done that was subtle, natural, yet noticeable. Teresa sure delivered! After looking at a few photos I came with on my iPhone she got to work hand-painting away and promised me it would be gradual (I was paranoid about getting harsh lines of color! Huge ombre no-no!) and natural. She sectioned my hair, painted to her liking and then left the color in for what seemed like maybe 15-20 minutes. She said my hair was "obedient" and the color didn't need to be left any longer. Candace washed my hair thoroughly and with Teresa's guidance applied and washed off a simple clear gloss designed to just give me some added shine. Afterwards Candace conditioned, untangled and blew out my hair. As this was happening my friend was getting highlights, layers and also getting a blow-out of her own as we shared a bottle of Vino Verde that we purchased for our "hair date". They didn't mind us being loud...okay...ME being loud and us drinking wine - they even provided us with chilled wine glasses and poured for us, lol. Yann even kept exclaiming, "We're having a hair party!!!" - and we certainly were :). This place is definitely a bit more pricey than what I'm used to since I don't really get my hair done often. I'm usually a "wash and go" kinda gal, only really paying attention to my side bangs to make sure they're straight and frizz-free. But as the old adage says, "you get what you pay for" and what you'll get here is excellence. Granted that my services were complimentary just this one time, I would definitely come back here for more hair fun, to touch up and I'd definitely recommend Varin Salon to anyone looking for a great color, cut and/or style. read more

I've decided to delete that post because the salon has tried in multiple ways to contact me and apologize and I believe it to be very sincere. The cut was way way shorter than I wanted and by far not the best cut I have Ever had but in trying to be positive it is more manageable than before. Fair warning though-If you see an ad on salon apprentice and you go please just be very clear on the length that you want and pay attention as they are cutting it and speak up. I visited Varin salon for the first time this past weekend and had a fantastic experience all around. I was blown away by the service and the unique experience they provide to their guests. I found out about them through Yelp and decided to come in for a cut with Gina. I appreciated the ease of booking and responsiveness when scheduling or making changes. The salon is easy to get to and beautiful inside -- clean, modern and elegant. I was pleasantly greeted by reception, who were just as lovely in person as they were over the phone. They offer complimentary beverages to guests. I opted for Prosecco. What a lovely way to start the morning! They certainly aim to please and make sure their guests are well taken care of. My wash was with Nicole. It was so relaxing. She took her time and gave a nice scalp massage. Nicole will be getting lash certified in the near future, so look out for that if you're in the market for lash extensions! When I got into Gina's chair, I knew I was in good hands. I showed her a picture to give her a sense of what I wanted, but they also utilize iPads with plenty of hair inspo, so you can pick out what you like. This ensures that both the client and stylist are on the same page. I had never seen this feature in a salon before, but I thought it was great. Gina is lovely, personable and very talented! She nailed the look I was going for and really seems to have an eye for what will look best with your features. I'm not normally big on products, but I feel like she selected products that I actually needed and really helped me to understand why she was using them. They use L'Oreal professional products and I really liked them, especially Next Day hair, which I decided to take home with me. To round out the whole experience, they take photos afterward so you can keep track of the different looks and styles you've had there for next time. This is probably super helpful for replicating looks, especially when it comes to color. They offered a complimentary makeup touch up for the photos. Liz, the makeup artist, was very nice and knowledgeable. She did an excellent job making my just rolled out of bed self, look camera ready. I would highly recommend Varin salon and specifically Gina for hair, though I'm sure all of their stylists and colorists are fantastic. They have different people do color vs cuts and after having both I understand why. Teresa is an amazing colorist- she works quickly and precisely and really understands color. Judy gave me a great hair cut where she did not take a lot off as requested. It's always hard to find someone who does not get scissor happy. The service and friendliness of this place is impeccable. I'm one of 'those people' that's terrified of letting others or even myself cut my hair. So it happens less often than it actually really should. But my friend Steph P. said she would go with me and hold my hand and that everything would be okay. The place inside is beautiful. Well lit with chandeliers on the second floor of a townhouse like establishment above stores on Madison Avenue. Very chic. Phillipe greeted me at the door and offered to put my belongings into the closet while he gave me a hair robe to wrap on and welcomed me to 'join the party!' I brought wine. It was necessary. After sitting down for a few minutes I consulted with the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING hair colorist Sarah and the man that would later cut my hair, Yann. I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to do other than get hi-lights and low-lights and chop off at least a solid 2-3 inches and have that layered to some degree. Which I all explained because I felt like saying 'turn me into Lauren Conrad' was not a good justification for myself and that something could potentially go horribly wrong if I actually said that. I was reassured quickly that they weren't going to do anything absolutely dramatic but bring out more of the natural colors of my hair and get rid of whatever past single process dye I had absent-mindedly let someone else do to me a year or so ago. They were incredibly reassuring and offered wonderful suggestions. Shortly after this they provided chilled glasses and even poured our wine! How gracious. Sarah began the process of coloring my hair and from there on it went by pretty fast. The result turned out more amazing than I expected. I was more than pleased. As was my friend. She had something a little trickier done with blonde ombre tints done in dark brown hair. The cutting of my hair seemed almost like an artful dance and he asked beforehand about lengths for extra reassurance to make sure I wasn't uncomfortable with the length it would turn out. It was fantastic and he even offered that if the layers look too long in two weeks that I could come in for an extra touch up. What I was also intrigued by is that they not only take your wishes into careful thought but they look at the complexion and coloring of your skin, makeup, eye color, etc. Take into careful consideration what products you use, how you wear your hair, the texture, frizziness attributed to humidity. Truly outstanding. If I could, I would get my hair done every 4-6 months here because the service was that warm and welcoming and cutting/dying my hair actually did turn into a pleasant party. read more

He politely runs his ideas by you after asking about your style prefferences and hair habits, and during the cut you can tell he is focused on getting every detail right. Highly recomended! Gina and Varin are fantastic! Friday I had a wonderful haircut and blowout at Varin (price: $105). Gina (my stylist) was professional and courteous, which made me feel like a VIP client from the second I walked in the salon door. After taking a look at my original cut, Gina made some suggestions (she used examples on an iPad to illustrate what she was thinking) and went to work. While cutting, Gina explained to me that she was part of the L'oreal Professional team, and spent her time outside of the salon traveling the region, and educating other staff on new products and techniques. She also suggested some of her favorite products, and shared a few for me to take home. This made me feel like I was in great hands! After Gina was finished, I had a complimentary makeup touch up. A very pleasant experience! Everyone there is pleasant and treats you like a VIP. During the initial sit down with my stylist she pulled out an iPad to offer a visual on her vision. The suggestions did take my concerns into account, she's a good listener! The cut and dry were well executed, she delivered on the promise and to top it off, I was served a glass of excellent Prosecco. To conclude my visit, I was offered a complimentary makeup touch up (they have their own makeup line) followed by a quick photoshoot. Working with the United Nations I have had haircuts in more than 20 countries and sometimes with multiple hairdressers in those countries. My hair is a bit difficult - and I am admittedly high maintenance. When I got posted back to New York after 12 years in field, one of my first stops in NYC was at VARIN Salon. Yann - the owner - is simply the hairdresser with the best technique that I have ever experienced. While I am no expert and cannot give you an objective assessment matrix, it is just one of those situations where 'you know it when you see it'. Bought an extensions on a clips by Pop. Cons: 1) customer service is not the best, when I paid deposit Philipp told me it will take no longer than 5 days to arrive, but it took 10 days. After 5th day I called and tried to figure out whats happening, nobody didn't pick up the phone and I left a voice message, and no surprise nobody didn't call me back. On 9th day a called them again, finally smb picked up the phone... and the woman on the phone surprised me more, she said that she is not in charge of that, well I paid money and nobody in charge of that, what's is service is that??? I was really upset!!!! 2) I tried to make an appointment with the specialist of the extensions, but Philipp told well you don't need a specialist you just come and pick them up. Really????? I paid almost $450 just to pick them up!????? I could buy it online for a $300 from the same company and they will delivered it to my door!!!!!! Ridiculous situation but I said to him well I didn't paid almost double just to pick them up!!!! Pros: 1) nice area; 2) bright salon. I've been getting haircuts by Judy for over a year now and she does such a beautiful job. It's consistent and she always asks if what I got done feels right for me every single time even if it's the same style of cut. What I love the most on how she cuts my hair is that I can put my hair up all day in a bun and when I take the hair tie out it has a natural blown out look. It's definitely the way she cuts it because I've never been able to do that before without there being kinks or dents in my hair from hair ties. I get compliments on my haircut all the time even when I don't style it so people love her work. The staff is sweet and that definitely includes the gentleman at the front desk. I haven't colored my hair or done my makeup there but based on what I have seen I would definitely trust them if I ever needed those services. read more

Loved Varin salon, and Crystal was amazing! The salon itself is very chic, clean and comfortable. Crystal greeted me upon arriving and took me right over to talk about my look. While I got shampooed, she pulled up some pics so we could decide what I wanted. Once landing on an image, she kept it up on the wall to continually reference. I have been going visiting this Salon since last October 2010. I am very happy with my Cut and color. Teresa has done my color a few times now and has been great on advising me on changing and maintenance on my style and color. I have also recently had my last color done with Sarah and was very happy with the outcome. Lauren has been cutting my hair and I am super happy with her, especially with my recent look. We call it the Halle Berry look. Ever since she did my last pixie short transformation, I can't seem to see my hair any different way. I have been going to Varin Salon for four years. Yann styles my hair and Ricardo does the keratin (de-frizzing). Mara does the color. I have never had a better cut, keratin and color, ever. Ricardo is a genius, Yann gives me an amazing cut and blow dry, every time and Mara is a wizard with color. You can't tell that there is color in my hair because it's so natural.
