Called Van on Friday to see if he could come and repair our Intermatic Timer for our Hot Water Heater. He asked if Monday would be better because my wife and I were leaving the house on Friday afternoon. We agreed that Monday would be better. I texted Van a picture of what could be the problem. He texted back on Monday and advised me he would text me when he was on his way. He showed up in 20 minutes and already was prepared with the proper part. He wasn't here long and did the repair. This is a review specifically about PV installation. I contacted Van to do some rewiring in my mom's house and at that time decided to install a PV/battery system. From the beginning of the PV installation project, I had problems.  These problems were eventually worked out after much conflict, effort and discussion, along with the replacement of some of the equipment. Unfortunately, my system still wasn't efficient.  Being very careful with my electrical usage, during the summer it was and continues to be a daily occurrence that my system returns and buys electricity from HECO 5-8 hr a day.  During the winter months, I have had days when the system went back to buying from the grid for more than 12-14 hours.  Van initially responded to my complaints by attempting to rewire the system and he sent representatives to check the system's integrity. Van assured me that my PV system was working as it should be. But because I continued to have problems, I continued my own research. To my surprise I was informed by the SimpliPHi battery tech support team that 'According to the single line diagram you provided only (5) PHI 3.4-48V batteries were installed, meaning your system is undersized by five batteries".... Subsequently, I was denied the warranty on the batteries. The Outback inverter engineering department(the one used for my system) further stated 'we are in agreement that not having the required amount of batteries for each inverter is a major issue".  Indeed, my lesson was that using a licensed electrical company was no guarantee for the proper design of a battery augmented PV system. Van at one time told me.. "you paid for 5 batteries and I gave you 5 batteries", which is true.. But I did not realize that based on manufacturers' guidelines and recommendation, I was paying and contracting for a substandard system. Vans Electric Inc. Look no further!! Van is the man!! Once again i had an electrical issue. Van answered my call on Monday even though it was a holiday. I had another company set to come today thru Choice Home Warranty. For whatever reason that didn't happen. So I called Van to pay out of pocket, because I was without lights in the living room for 1 week. As always Van answered and offered to come out within an hour. Sure enough it was a simple breaker issue. Van did not rip me off, like most other techs would do. Van even waived the service fee, others would have charges $100 and up. I'm not saying that you will get a free deal, but you will get an honest electrician who will answer your calls and schedule within 24 hours. read more

Thanks to the praises and honesty from fellow Yeeps, our need for electrical troubleshooting and repair was answered. Our neighborhood had recently experienced a blackout but when power returned we noticed that some our light switches and electric receptacles weren't responding as before. We replaced lightbulbs and checked our fuses before we decided to call in the professionals! So, what would any self respecting Yeep do to find a trustworthy, dedicated, cost efficient and friendly professional service? Yelp to the rescue! We called Van's Electric yesterday and Van squeezed us in this morning. What seemed to be an "easy" and simple troubleshooting call, this visit turned into quite a puzzle. Our house isn't THAT old, ok, about 20 years old but was built by licensed contractors and subcontractors. Van found that whoever wired our home had done some "funky" things like shortcutting. Our worries and fears were that of possible electrical shorts that lead to fire. Sure enough, Van showed us the wiring problems that had the potential of leading to a short. While he was in our home, we asked Van to change out several receptacles, too. Van is very knowledgeable, thorough, honest and methodical. Here we go... the work isn't done yet, but I give this company props for answering the phone, giving me a hard date, and estimate to get the job done! Responsive gets them the three stars! And the confidence I heard from the phone call, I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE! I've contacted several other companies over weeks, either they follow up with " did our estimator call you?"... or just plain no answer! I followed up thru YELP, found someone who has some customer skills, and knew exactly what I need to be done! I'll follow up and update, once the job is complete Waited all morning for a confirmation call or more targeted time of the work I needed. I understand things come up, an emergency would lead to calling the customers, that scheduled work won't be addressed! I plan my weekend hours around this company and when I ask for a time? They text me an emergency arose and they're not coming! I normally don't blow off steam about a company, but after all the great reviews, these guys truly disappointed me....and I had a lot of work, to be lined up for these guys if this one job, proved out as good as everyone said these guys shined. #disappointed read more

Update to my last review.... 5 star service! Van and Aaron were right on time to start the project, expertly completed the work to my satisfaction and met the quote price exactly! I have pics attached, but that won't do justice to the work as this is just the electric work before the drywall work and cabinet installs. My light fixtures weren't working only to find that the connection was loose or loosened through the years. Amazing to know how one bad connection can affect several others. Van came and solved all of my issues! Now I finally have light!!! Made great suggestions for other fixtures, too! The response time was quick and prompt! (On a Saturday, too!!) Called Van to install a powerline to prep for our dishwasher installment. Responded quickly, he worked fast with a helper, he vacuumed the dust and shavings but didnt get all of it. On here it says he accepts credit cards as a form of payment but when he sent me the invoice it asked for my account number and routing number. Didn't really feel comfortable with that. I told him I would be paying by card but he never mentioned that the payment would be via checking and I would have to input my personal information. Overall I think he did a good job on the service but he should update his form of payment because its misleading and false advertisement. He needs to provide a Credit card / Debit card option. I'm so grateful. They are awesome! I had an emergency electric panel issue Monday night had to call HECO had them assess the situation. End result to hire an electrician to replace box, keep in mind no electricity that night and all day. I had friends give referrals everyone I called busy, off island, etc. I turned to Yelp, advice from my boss in AZ, and I couldn't believe first call I made was Van's Electric and Van sent someone over right away and immediately started working. Their goal to get me electricity ASAP and they didn't 5pm not even a full 24 hours without power. Everyone was professional and work ethic is spot on!! For me when I can't use my dryer and have to take a cold shower, that's a first world class problem. Van showed up with his crew the next morning earlier than 7am. This guy is so punctual and wit. He's techy and communicates via texts too. Anyways, he had to return 1 week later to fix everything completely to rewire some of the old electrical line. I called Van yesterday because our garage light wouldn't go on. My husband tried buying new fluorescent lights but they wouldn't go on. He bought a new light fixture. Still wouldn't work. Cyndy's Bottom Line: Quality service! I called to have a motion sensor light installed and when it was completed I asked Van if could do me a favor and show me how to take off the cover on my garage light so I could change the bulb. It ended up that the ballast and bulbs needed changing. Fortunately, Van had the ballast and bulbs for replacement. What an awesome experience. Yesterday, one circuit/breaker stopped working. This one controlled about 5 lights in the living room and kitchen so we were basically sitting in the dark last night. LOL. I got one referral for an electrician but since he never responded to a message, it was time to move on. Looked on Yelp and saw Van's high rating and many ratings. Called Van on a Sunday and was surprised that he answered. Said he was busy the next few days so I was getting concerned that I'd be sitting in the dark for some time. I called Van on Saturday afternoon about 12:30. He came to the house by about 1:30 even though it was a busy day for him. After about 30 minutes of trouble shooting he determined that the problem would require replacing the underground wiring to my home. Van arranged to come back first thing on Monday. He and his two crew came back at 0630 on Monday as promised. Extremely prompt starting the work and everything was complete by 0830. Van is a complete professional. Scheduled an appointment for friday at 9am with another company and gave them till 9:30am. When i called to see if they were on their way they admittedly said they forgot and rescheduled for the afternoon. But as ocd as i am and wanting to get the job done i needed a backup. That's when i called Van. He was currently at another job site and would be available after. He arrived before the estimated 45 minutes. I was luckily able to reproduce the issue and within minutes Van located the issue at the main breaker. He explained and showed me the faulty part. Temporarily the circuit was tied onto another breaker until the replacement part is purchased and scheduled to return next week. Van called 15 minutes after he left and told me that since he'll still be in the area, he'll pick up the part and return within the hour and as promised he did. Awesome! The main electrical panel for my home needed to be replaced and I called around a couple electricians and they quoted me anywhere from $1200-$2000 to replace it. One of them seemed very dishonest and the one who quoted me higher was longtime family friend. I prayed on my way to work asking God to help me with this and lo and behold while I was listening to 1040 KLHT an ad came on for Van's Electric. I remembered going to church with Van and I've known for almost 20 years and completely forgot about him cause he fellowships with another church now. I called the next day and he came the day after to give me an estimate. He quoted me with an honest and fair price and did the work the following week. It ended up costing me less than he quoted and those other electricians were quoting. He did very good work and the new panel looks great! We needed to put in another breaker box, add in some outlets and dryer outlets in our shed. I called Van and he came to check out the job. Van is very knowledgeable, super nice, and honest. After I met with him, I knew I wanted him to do the job. He's actually a third generation electrician and he's been doing electrical work since he was just a little kid in school! Wow! When he came to do the job, Kaipo came with him. They were both clean, friendly, and efficient. They worked pretty fast and they were really meticulous with their work. They even let us watch them and answered any questions we had. My husband and I watched in awe as they worked! It's clear he's been doing this since he was a kid, because...man, he was good. Electrician rewired kitchen and main circuit breaker and did a very poor job. Firstly, substandard wiring was used and could well have led to a fire had it not been discovered. Electrician was forced to go back and rewire, causing a lot of commotion and debris. Holes in ceiling/drywall were larger and more numerous than necessary. Electrician made a huge mess without doing even basic, common-sensical prepping, creating lots of extra work cleaning up. Old outlets, screws, cut wire pieces, etc. left strewn around. Definitely could NOT recommend this vendor! read more

Five stars really isn't enough. I called this afternoon while at work to ask a few questions. My main breaker had been tripping (4 times over the weekend). Van was very helpful over the phone and have me several possible issues and a price quote for each possibility. We made an appointment for 7am the following morning for him to come out and take a look and see what the problem was (at no charge! Wow). Just before getting off work Van called back and said he could fit me in today and wanted to come take a look at my breaker. I got stuck in traffic but my wife was home to greet him. By the time I got home it was all done. He explained to me what he did. He checked my inside fuse box to make sure there wasn't any issues there. He checked the main breaker and discovered that not only was it wearing out due to age....the connection was loose. He further explained that both issues (age and loose connection) cause heat and heat is actually what trips the breaker. Luckily we caught it early enough and the damage didn't worsen. His professionalism and great service was top notch! He gave me a great price and a free tube of caulk!!! I am sorely disappointed with Van's Electric and cannot understand how he had such a great rating when he let me down two times in a row. First, he stated he would come by my home between 4:00-5:00PM the day after (Saturday) I contacted him through Yelp (Friday night). Only when I texted him at 6:30PM on Saturday, he called me back saying he couldn't make it. He was pleasant enough and we accepted his excuse he was busy and could not help us unless it was after two weeks (he's busy). He said he would give us an estimate first. We thought we still would give him our business even though we would have to wait two weeks for him to do a repair. He says he's a Christian on his Yelp page and a second generation electrician. We felt he would be dependable and honest. So, that (last) Saturday evening, he told us he would give us an estimate after assuring us he would come over late one evening this week to do so (the following Saturday was too busy for him as he had a large installation job at a church). . . and we believed him that he would come over to do this estimate. We finally had to text him Thursday evening (5 days later) asking him if he was planning to come over to do this estimate. He texted back, "Sorry, too busy." That was it. As a business person, especially one who depends upon the quality of service being done, the responsibility to follow through, and the trust and bond that must be created between customer and company, I will not recommend Van's Electric to anyone. It would be a mistake to recommend someone irresponsible and misleading. We've asked ourselves why Van couldn't have planned ahead to talk to us earlier in the week that he didn't have the time to help us? Our conclusion is he didn't have the common courtesy, business etiquette, or foresight to speak to us explaining or apologizing for his empty promise. I learned one thing about using Yelp, begin looking at the negative comments first. Van sticks to his word! If he says he'll call you, he will. I called because I was trying to install a new chandelier and my dining room. I tripped a circuit and could not get the breaker to reset that supplied power to my dining room. Van explain he didn't have time to stop by my house but told me to give him a call when I got home, so I did. He troubleshot the problem for me over my phone for no charge! Not only that, but Van helped me figure out that my circuit breakers were mislabeled! And the best part about all of this is that I did a minor renovation to my kitchen as a surprise for my wife. Everything was going great until this electrical problem, and because of Van I was able to finish it the night before she get home. After buying a new house, and having a previous electrician come by to straighten out the electrical and not fixing it, I had serious reservations if I could get it it fixed. However, I should have called Van the first time. He was early, showed me what needed to be done, educated me on his craft while he was repairing it (which allowed me to do some additional plugs later on) and was completely professional.
