Walking in felt like stepping back in time. I doubt much has changed about this place in decades, and that's entirely a compliment. We were seated near a window and the ambiance was everything you'd want, cozy, warm, and genuinely inviting. I loved the feel of it. Our server was very kind. Her English was limited, but she was gracious and patient as I attempted to speak German, and was generous enough to tell me I did well. It added to the charm of the whole experience. Now, the food. The potatoes that came with the schnitzel were the best German potatoes I've ever had. The schnitzel itself was delicious, exactly what you'd hope for. The cheese spaetzle was a highlight as well, rich and satisfying. Plan on sharing it. The one miss was the pizza my sister-in-law ordered, which was fine but felt out of place. Stick to the German classics and you won't be disappointed. Would love to return if I ever make it back to Heidelberg.

Our dinner was really good. We did have reservations. We even enjoyed some non-alcoholic beer. We had apple strudel for dessert, which was also really good. We were staying at the hotel, so just had to go upstairs after dinner. For the hotel - the only difficulty was the check in. We weren't sure where to go to check in. So we ended up asking the wait staff. We walked through the restaurant with our luggage to the the check in desk. Our room was comfortable and homey. The door required an old fashioned key to open. You can't beat the location being right by the old bridge.

However, that doesn't really diminish the hotel experience because the air is already cool and with open windows (no bugs!), A/C is not necessary. The bedroom was fairly large. Though the single beds were pushed together, they came with single-sized comforters. The room also contained two bedside tables, a writing desk and chair, a sofa, and a closet. The bathroom was good-sized too, however the shower was pretty narrow. I don't imagine it would be very accommodating to guests with Reubenesque figures. The wifi is not consistent throughout the hotel. It can only be accessed in the dining room (though barely) and lobby. There's also a playroom for younger kids and a beautiful garden outside. A smaller mountain trail that leads to a nearby local village can also be found in the back. Breakfast is available from 7am and consists of a wide array of breads, deli meats, sausages, cheese, patê, eggs, cereal, juices, and fresh fruits. Overall, a very good variety of breakfast foods; and very well-rounded. Staff is friendly. The owner works the reception is extremely accommodating. He also lives on-site. Though, don't try to contact him after 11pm -- he, understandably, gets grumpy cos he has to wake up at 6am every morning to work. Pro-Tip: If you go out and return late at night, the night entrance is on the right-hand side entrance. It'll lead straight to the kids' playroom. There's a sign, but it's not too prominently displayed and it's in German.

The staff are very kind and nice, and I quite enjoy this place of all the other hotels we've stayed in the past week (quite a few hotels by the way, a good 6) and this is the only one that has decent sized rooms. Just stated a night here for a Christmas market tour. The hotel had great profits to the Christmas…read moremarket venders and was located in the lovely Old Town part of the city. The room we had overlooked a river. Front desk staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful (providing a map and some recommendations). The lobby lounge area was cozy and beautifully decorated for Christmas. Our room did have two twin beds that were actually separated from each other, sometimes hard to find in Europe. The room itself was not particularly spacious, especially the bathroom (which was about the size of a cruise ship bathroom). The bed was firm, but reasonably comfortable. The pillow was a large European style pillow, but needed a bit more firmness for neck support. The hotel does have an elevator, but it only goes up to the third floor. If your room is on the fourth floor, as ours was, you have to go up a final set of steps to your floor (but the front desk did ask us if we needed assistance with that). The hotel appeared to have an associated restaurant next to it, but we did not eat there to comment. The location and friendly staff definitely take the edges off the negatives. For those traveling by train, there is not close proximity to the station (so you'd need a taxi to the hotel). However, the hotels I stayed at in Germany that were close to the main train stations ended up being in much more shady neighborhoods--so lack of proximity may be one reason why the area felt so much safer for this hotel.

It had air conditioning which was nice on a warm day. Once your car was parked you can walk to everywhere. It's an old building updated nicely. The only downside is no parking but if you use the parking place they suggest then you do get a discount. Be prepared if you have a large vehicle trying to find a place. The parking spots are very small. I knew this in advance. The views, the people , the bed and the location makes it worth staying. I will be back.
