My current profession leaves me desk bound and shackled in a suit and tie, being a former Marine I began looking for a way to relieve stress, challenge myself, and learn something new. After a bit of research and a few quick internet searches I found myself on the Vanguard Gym web page, after perusing the site and check the schedule I decided to stop in and see what MMA is all about. About 5 months later I was 15 pounds lighter and down to a single digit body fat percentage, which I still am today some 2 years later. I find all of the workouts offered at Vanguard to be very challenging and work my cardiovascular system as well as my muscular endurance and strength. The entire Staff ensures each student gets a great workout every class and that each of us learns the proper technique and form associated with the movement. I am continually impressed with the cleanliness of the entire gym; the mats and equipment are cleaned daily as well as the restroom and changing rooms. I was initially intimated to join Vanguard, I though being a 240 pound former Marine people with a more advance skill set would look to single me out and "beat up on the big guy" the exact opposite was true. I was paired up Coach Mike who is about my size but far more advanced in the skill and technique department. Coach Mike was extremely helpful, he went out of his way to make sure I understood all the movements that first day, and he still does. Never have I been made to feel foolish or uncomfortable at all in fact, Vanguard it is the most positive environment I have ever trained in. I believe this is all due to Coach Doug and how he runs his gym, the training is great, the Staff is knowledgeable, and facilities are immaculate. One unexpected outcome of joining Vanguard was all of the friends I have made while training there; this, in addition to all of the other a fore mentioned qualities is what keeps me coming back day after day. My son and I started training at Vanguard in late 2012. At first my son was hesitant to train jiu jitsu, but after only a few minutes on the mat with the kids coaches, he loved it. He went from wanting to only train a couple of days a week to wanting to train every day. The kids coaches are outstanding in how flexible they are toward each kid based on their development, yet firm when they feel the need. Vanguard is the only martial arts gym I feel comfortable sending my kid to because I trust the owner and lead instructor, Doug. He is an oustanding role model and solid person. As for the adult jiu jitsu training....it is very well organized so each class and week of training chains off each other, leaving even the beginning student with a sense of knowing what to do from class to class. Many other martial arts establishments just throw out technique after technique without any thought on how those techniques chain together. That method leaves many students confused. That is not the case at Vanguard. Although the classes are highly structured, there is a lot of room for flexibility as there is a lot of open mat time where students can work on their techniques with other students and coaches. I've trained in the martial arts for a little over a decade throughout my life and can say the quality and structure of Vanguard's system is second to none. As for the physical property. It is exceptionally clean with many restrooms, showers, and changing rooms that fit a busy person needs, such as my own. I can train hard, shower up, and be on to work without having to go back home. Although I only train brazilian jiu jitsu, I see the CrossFit class has tons of energy and many students who seem to be really enjoying the experience and comraderie. I'm a new member and I can only speak towards the BJJ/Thai kicking boxing portions of this gym, as well as its members. I did a trial at a number of other places in Herndon, Sterling, and Reston areas, though none others in Manassas. I also had a short stint at a place in El Paso, TX with regard to BJJ training, so that's the extent of my perspective. This gym is fantastic. The people are really what make it. Coach Douglas is as down to earth a guy you can ask for. Talking to him, you infer a genuine passion for BJJ and interest in seeing everyone progress. He also takes a real pride in the performance of his students. These two qualities are key, but it's his third quality that make this gym stand out (at least to me): the ability to instruct. He's organized, he comes at it with a plan, and there's no information overload. He demonstrates a lesson several times, each time building up your knowledge further, until you're aware of the fundamentals, the risks, and the advantages inherent to what you're learning. The same goes for the Thai Kickboxing. I didn't even know what a slip or weave was on my first day, and the beginning instructor, Reid, worked with me personally during the class just to catch me up to speed on their curriculum. I really can't speak highly enough of the staff. It's not just Coach Doug; guys like Reid are at least half of why I decided to sign up. Add to that a class of students that reciprocate that passion and you have a frankly fun (can we use that word in a gym?) classes. I've constantly had higher belts pause mid-roll to show me how to defend against their assaults if they see me struggling, and even new students try to execute clean technique rather than a frenzied assault. It was love at first sight; addictive and rewarding. It has been Seven months since, my life started; rebirth celebration of self, empowerment and DRIVE. I am now at the best; and still improving each day. I joined Crossfit at Vanguard gym in January of 2010. Since then, my life has change and improves in a multitude of areas that before Crossfit were somehow turn off or asleep; now through Crossfit finally reawaken and resurface. Crossfit has enhanced my disciplinary skills, not only in regards to fitness but in life in general. I now work harder and know the value of being the best you can be; at all times. My Coordination and motor skills are at there best, and I'm very proud of them. My technicality and strategy skills are at the top of there game whether at the gym or in life. I love Crossfit! Strengthening my physical strength, will power and endurance to a level I never knew before. Crossfit allows me to work and strive for a better physical me, a better me, someone more like me; with goals to reach, in every aspect of life and the drive to accomplish them. I can now Dead lift 90lbs. wow! That's something I never even knew I was physically capable of? Vanguard Gym is amazing, definitely the supporting back bone to my drive. The atmosphere at Vanguard gym is definitely contagious with members from every walk of life. You can feel the winner mentality and strong drive that moves everyone to strive for greatness. As a former varsity athlete, competition drives me. When I came to Vanguard gym 10 months ago I first wanted to be sure that I was not biting off more than I could chew, and that I could be ushered into this environment of very active competitors smoothly. I found a group that facilitated growth in competition and in family-style team values. Even the most active and successful competitors of Team Vanguard, took the time to help newcomers, like myself, become acclimated with the facility and the curriculum. It was really an ego-free zone. The coaching staff is very thorough and passionate about the martial arts. They makes it fun and very simple for even entry level athletes and normal people seeking to boost their activity level. I take part in the BJJ program at Vanguard. After my first Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament I found nothing but support in my efforts to learn more and in early August I took home two gold medals at a jiu-jitsu tournament hosted by U.S. Grappling. It would not have been possible without the support and intensive instruction i received at Vanguard Gym. Beyond the increases I have seen in my athletic ability, I find myself welcoming challenges in day to day life and in the workplace. I have been at Vanguard Gym for the past year. Previously, I competed in Tae Kwon Do sparring and boxing in Connecticut untiI I tore my Achilles tendon in 2004 and an elbow tendon in 2005. After these injuries and the birth of my children in 2006 and 2008, I found it hard to pursue martial arts with any regularity. SInce moving back to the DC area, I have searched for an all around martial arts and fitness program, and took judo and jiu jitsu in Alexandria when I had the time to break away from parenting 2 young kids and working full time. When I first entered Vanguard gym, I knew that the gym fit all my needs, as it had a very structured, well organized jiu jitsu and muay thai program that stressed fundamentals and proper technique. Coach Doug's leadership, dedication and attention to detail is evident in the excellent coaching provided by him and his coaches; the top notch sparring and fitness equipment; and the newly renovated cross fit area and wrestling mats. Since joining the gym I have reached a fitness level that allowed me to complete my 1st triathalon this year, and Vanguard's atmosphere and camaraderie has inspire me to set more goals for the immediate future. I could not be happier with selecting Vanguard Gym as the Martial Arts School for my son. Not only is my son enjoying the Jiu-jitsu class and Thai boxing - he is engaged in the class and is asking questions. Vanguard Gym sets the frame of mind expected by the sign above the entrance of the gym. "No Ego". I have been a practitioner of Taekwondo, Shotokan karate, Tai Chi and Kenpo Karate, in my observation all the Vanguard coaches are technical, enthusiastic, and eager to learn as well as teach but always remain humble. Unlike other martial arts schools the coach to student ratio is excellent. There are at least two coaches or more in each class. Unlike most other martial arts schools, Vanguard does not have children coaches - which to me make a tremendous difference. Vanguard Gym is an awesome gym to train at! Whether you want to learn Thai Boxing, Jiu Jitsu, MMA, or just get into shape, you can do it all here. The kids program is excellent as well, every kid that trains here has a blast while training. We have a very succesful MMA fight team, which reflects how good the Jiu Jitsu and Thai Boxing programs are, as well as the MMA program of course. The Crossfit program is excellent for anyone who may just need a program for getting into shape, and for the people who compete or fight, it's like magic cardio. All these programs helped get me in shape and build my confidence to compete myself. The environment is great, Doug is a great instructor who will gladly take the time to help you with something you may be having trouble with. Vanguard is an amazing place! I initially took my sons there for training. They were very enthusiastic about learning Brazilian Jujitsu and Thai Boxing. I really enjoyed watching them learn and improve their game. Coach Doug keeps things fun and safe. All the students are considerate and positive no matter what skill level their training partners have. Coach Doug Esposito has created a great community of competitive fighters, students, and cross fit enthusiasts. This is an inspirational place. As a member at Vanguard gym I cannot say enough wonderful things about it. This gym isn't a gym in a conventional sense. They truly specialize instruction to each and every person. Even as the "newbie" you will get instruction FROM THE INSTRUCTOR. This is not a place where others teach you (though more experienced members love to help, which is wonderful). Not only will you get to see mulitple instructors, but you will also see the owner and head instructor, Doug, on the mats and in the classes as well. I personally love how you can be training next to a house wife on one side and an undefeated professional fighter on the other. This is a wonderful place to train and be. I joined Vanguard Gym just over a year ago, July 2009, and absolutely love it. I joined for the CrossFit program. I am in better shape than I have ever been, at age 45. I was suffering from the beginning stages of osteoperosis/high cholestorol and today my doctor says the bone loss has stopped and my cholesterol level is good. It is a tough program, not for the undisciplined. But the unwavering support of the Coach, Doug Esposito, and the friendly, supportive attitutudes of all the other members has kept me coming back. It's always intimidationg walking into a martial arts gym for the first time, especially as a beginner. I walked into Vanguard Gym about a year ago and was immediately greeted by the Coach. I was welcomed as a part of the family instantly and have acheived a lot since starting there. It is a great atmosphere to train and Vanguard Manassas is especially unique because of the skill of the instructor. Vanguard gym is the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts gym I have been a member of. After 13 years of training in martial arts, I finally found a school that is able to help me meet my personal goals. Coach Doug is a true professional and an excellent instructor. I love training here! I only do Olympic lifting and I have learned so much from Coach Doug since I started here 6 months ago.
