Amazing facility for powerlifting. Allowed to use kilo plates freely, unlike Iron Asylum. Friendly staff and plenty of machines for bodybuilding and crossfit as well. Wish I lived closer!

***In the interest of fairness, transparency, and objectivity, I rate gyms on a grading rubric which takes into account several factors which you will see listed below. All total scores are based on the average number of stars per category. Each category's grade is based on the average of their sub-category grades if applicable. Thank you*** Overall Review: If you are a bodybuilder or powerlifter then this is the place for you! I have visited The Shop Gym three times since they have opened and can honestly say that this is probably the best gym I have ever experienced and may only be rivaled by places like the Oxygen Gym in Kuwait. The Shop Gym has definitely lived up to their nickname "the Mecca of Manassas" and workouts there are epic. If you live in Manassas go and join immediately. If you live around the Greater DC area then you must visit this gym. If you visit the area from out of town then you must visit this gym. Everyone, go to this gym!!! Gym Grading Rubric: Facility (4.75 Stars): Located in an industrial park of Manassas, the building is a massive yet unassuming warehouse affair. - Quality (5 Stars): The building is new and spacious with lots of room to move between areas and machines. - Atmosphere (4.5 Stars): As soon as you enter this place you feel excited and pumped just looking at all it has to offer. My only critique is that the music, while awesome and motivating, is played at levels which make it extremely difficult to carry on a conversation. We might could turn the dial down a bit. - Cleanliness (5 Stars): Overall cleanliness of the workout area and equipment is great. No complaints. - Hours of Operation (4.5 Stars): While not a local area member myself, if I was I would like better hours. They are open during the week from 7 am - 10 pm which pretty good but not for those early riser looking to get the lifting in before work. Weekend hours are 8 am - 8 pm. Again good hours but not as good as other area gyms open on the weekends at 7 am - 10 pm. For the expense of membership (see below) one might also expect 24 hour access. Perhaps they will move that in that direction after they have been open longer and see increased memberships. Equipment (5 Stars) - Type (5 Stars): This place has it all. I have seen machines that I rarely see anywhere else such as a true vertical leg press and even a unicorn, the standing chest press! I'm not even sure what else they have that I might have missed because there are so many cool pieces of equipment to choose from. They have cardio machines though not a ton of them like LA Fitness. - Serviceability (5 Stars): While some machines are obviously older than other everything appears to be in good working order. No complaints. - Amount (5 Stars): Like I said earlier, there are so many pieces of equipment, dead lift stations and squat racks that one should almost never have to wait to get their designed workout in. Utilities & Amenities (4.5 Stars): - Bathrooms/Showers (3.5 Stars): This facility is a warehouse and industrial so I wasn't expecting luxury bathrooms and I wasn't disappointed. The bathroom situation is best described as "functional". They could stand to be a little better cleaned and maintained which may be due to a lack of a dedicated maintanence employee, though I'm not for sure. Also, a serious gig is that they have only one shower on the premises. If I was an area member I would expect better shower arrangements and changing area with lockers. - Wi-Fi (5 Stars): I checked their wi-fi and was able to log on and play videos with no issue. - Other (5 Stars): One of the coolest things about The Shop is that they have a real posing room with mirrors, quality/proper lighting, and even the rear 45* angled mirror so you can see your back! They have a lounge area and small kitchen with sink, microwave, and fridge. There are also a lot of cubby spaces for guests to store their bags while they train. Owners & Staff (5 Stars): ok, these folks are great. The owners, Tim and Jason (there may be a third owner I haven't met) are genuine and friendly guys. Katie, Rachel, and the other staff members I have met are also super nice, engaging, and helpful. Membership & Fees (3.5 Stars): This one is tough. Membership is $55 per month. That's significantly higher than most competitors. I don't know their financials but I suspect the higher rates are due to the operating costs associated with having the biggest and best gym in the area. If I lived in the area I would join, but I am fortunate enough to be financially able to do so. The bottoms line is it's about what you value and what you can afford. If you are visiting you have two options: $15 for a day pass or pay $100 for a ten visit punch card. Clientele (5 Stars): Powerlifters dominate but they are a friendly bunch. Not a lot of soccer moms yet.

My experience here has been pretty positive from my visit. The Gym/Equipment: The gym itself is decently sized. It's not a huge space like commercial gyms, but smaller with just enough machines/equipment for everybody to use. Being that it is a strength gym, there are plenty of powerlifting equipment to use. Plenty of barbells, deadlifts platforms, comp. bench's and squat racks. And, they have plenty of accessory machines as well. Overall, this gym has plenty of equipment to go around and nice quality selections to choose from. The gym was well kept and clean as well. The Environment/Staff: Upon entering the gym, I was greeted by the staff and they were incredibly welcoming and friendly. They gave me the tour of the space and I can tell from how everyone was interacting with each other, it was a tight-knit community. Seemed like almost everyone knew each other and it mad the whole environment feel very welcoming. The overall atmosphere was very cool, from the people to the great music selection. It was a fun experience. Overall, a 5/5. Highly recommend checking Unleash'd out! You won't be disappointed. I know I'll be back when I'm in the area again.

Not only do the staff and members welcome you with open arms (which is somewhat expected in CrossFit), but the coaches go the extra step to understand your strengths and weaknesses before the workout to ensure they can do everything in their ability to make you better and get as much value from the workout as possible. The staff's overall love and understanding of CrossFit shines through in the programming and the progressions/scales they provide to their members to ensure the highest quality CrossFit experience possible. In talking to the owner, the rigorous process and the required continuing education the coaching staff is required to maintain is unprecedented which also leads to a better CrossFit experience for both members and visitors. In our last visit, the box lived up to their unofficial name of "PR City" as I PR'ed my bench press - yes they programmed a regular bench press (not floor press) because they have enough racks and benches for the ENTIRE CLASS. Which leads me to another amazing aspect of the box - the equipment. Not only do they have a massive rig in the middle that can accommodate a ton of people, but they also have a dedicated area that has permanent gymnastic mats along the wall giving you a great place to work on handstand progressions or wall walks. Not to mention the massive amount of oly plates and rowers, but rarities at most boxes, but they have an OUTSIDE rig and dedicated stone pit. The use of technology to further the member experience is impressive as well. The staff encourages each member to report and track progress on beyondthewhiteboard, so that measurable results can be achieved. My wife, who is a Level 1 CrossFit Trainer at our home gym, said after our last visit, if we moved out of PA, we should consider the Manassas area just so she can coach and train at this facility. If you are visiting or considering trying CrossFit you cannot go wrong with starting at CrossFit Manassas.

We were immediately greeted by the two giant Mastiffs they have (which I can only assume also do CrossFit), and Jennifer got us checked in and introduced us to Coach Doug. They gave us a quick rundown of the workout for the day, and where all of the equipment was if we needed it. We met a few of the other people in the session, and it was great to see people of all skill levels knocking out the workout. It seemed like Doug and Jennifer gave us a little extra special attention because we were beginners, but they focused on safety and the right technique first, before they moved into building strength. I can safely say this is the first time I have done CrossFit and not injured myself. The facility had a lot of equipment in great condition, and they had a huge screen on the side of the wall that showed heart rate levels of some of the people in our session - it was very cool, and I enjoyed geeking out during the workout. The workout was good - not too intense, but my body is a little sore the next morning. Coach Doug even hung out with us for a few minutes after to encourage us to keep doing CrossFit if we feel it's right for us, and find something that works for us in our own towns. Overall, a great experience, very knowledgeable and fun group of people, and I would definitely recommend to anyone in the Manassas area - if nothing else, just drop in and try them out. We had a blast. Thanks, Doug and Jennifer! My shoulders thank you too.

Not the Experience You'd Expect From a "Judgment-Free Zone"…read more I spent a lot of time at this Planet Fitness location in Manassas, and it's honestly not what you'd expect from a place that promotes being welcoming and judgment-free. There's constant turnover in management -- and the most recent changes have only made things worse. The current manager creates a really tense and uncomfortable atmosphere. He's passive-aggressive and not easy to communicate with, which seems to affect both staff morale and the energy in the building overall. There are also ongoing issues that members constantly complain about -- from broken equipment to cleanliness concerns -- and nothing ever seems to get fixed. It's frustrating to see the same problems brought up again and again with no real action. Things are often just brushed under the rug until the next manager rolls in... and the cycle repeats. If you're looking for a gym where the environment feels positive, consistent, and well-managed, I would recommend checking out other locations or different fitness centers altogether.

I'm usually in and out without having to wait for equipment, and even when I do, the wait is short. The overall atmosphere is friendly-- as everyone relatively shares the same goals, and are consistently respectful. I frequent a couple other PFs throughout the year, but I'm happy to say this one, I can call home.
