My individual therapist's name was Courtney Day. I'm sure she meant no harm, but I felt harmed working with her. During sessions, she seemed bored, annoyed, unsupportive, impatient, and frustrated with the scope of my issues. Due to many traumas, I have been to many therapists over the years and did find it helpful, life saving even! But I found many of my experiences at Counseling ABQ to be counterproductive to my healing, and I am writing this in case anyone else has a difficult time there and wonders, as I did, whether it was me somehow. When I terminated with Counseling ABQ and sought treatment elsewhere, the experiences I had at Counseling ABQ did not repeat themselves elsewhere. Overall, everyone there was super friendly and well intended and kind, but I think for whatever reason that some of the therapists could use some individual feedback on how to allow patients there to feel as though they were treated with compassion. The support group I was in began with about 8 members and after a few months I stopped going because it was very re-triggering, and by the time I stopped going only one or two people were attending. About 3 people showed up to the first group who never came back, which further leads me to feel that perhaps other clients did not have an experience that left them feeling safe and as though their needs were being addressed. I think the work that the organization wants to do is with the best intentions and I mean no harm or disrepsect by writing this but I found that my experiences there hurt me more than helped me.

Back in August or September of 2016 I assessed with Awake and Aware and was placed with my current therapist. Now I'm awkward and really don't do well with new people in general. However, I don't recall my first appointment with my therapist which means it went very well. At Awake and Aware I've always been treated with kindness and respect. Despite my constant mean mug they always greet me with a smile and appear happy to see me. Next, my therapist. I've been around the therapy block and this is the best match I've ever had. My therapist has a sense of humor, is able to put my feet to the fire when needed, and best of all is authentic. I'm purposefully not posting their name here because you got to trust the process of being placed with the right person for you. DBT is the form of therapy used at Awake and Aware and clients are required to attend skills group once a week for 90 minutes. If you're looking for a therapist this could be the place for you.

The first was what has helped me the most. I have worked thus far with Alexa Brown who is doing a phenomenal job taking me seriously. I struggle with the impression that the people around me do not, on even the most fundamental level, have any respect for me, and, as I unravel myself in order to heal the parts of myself about which I'm most ashamed, Alexa's unwavering validation has been invaluable. I could not have asked for a person to whom it is easier to speak. The second was the ease by which I have been able to access therapy. I found it surprising that I could manage to fit anything at all into my schedule, given how much I've struggled to access other forms of healthcare since moving to New Mexico. When we questioned this approach, our child's therapist of four months (Marla) immediately dropped our child's case and closed her file, meaning we couldn't try another therapist or get a referral to another practice. My advice to new patients would be to get a really good idea of what the therapy is, and whether that it will provide a safe environment for your child. Unfortunately, it was not safe for our child, and I wish I had learned that sooner.

(The building shares a restroom that is in desperate need of maintenance by the building mgt - but that's NOT ATI's fault.)
