They were not only friendly but in the 45 mins I was there managed to give me a pdf with pictures and videos of my vehicle color coded in green, yellow, and red. Green being good to go, yellow being problems needed to be look at in the near future, and red being problems that needed to be addressed right now. All with explanations and questions further answered by the manager who explained it to me well esp for someone with no car knowledge. The manager was really upfront with me telling the costs of those repairs and if I was looking to buy a new car it might be cheaper to get a new one. I've had mine for 11 years that's been on multiple cross country road trips and I was not responsible enough to do good maintenance on it. It really made me trust them. I did not feel like I was getting hustled whatsoever which is something I'm sure everyone fears going into the auto shop. Not to mention they were dog friendly, had free coffee, and a record player with various records available for you to play. I got my vehicle within the hour. They gave me a new air freshener, thank you card with a company pen / business card inside, and they included a keychain with a punch card for a reward after some visits. Like wow! This shop is always asking for reviews so here goes. Had a transmission replaced about a year ago…read more Within a year of getting the transmission replaced it felt like it was slipping so we took it back in. They said it was a cracked engine block. After 2-3 weeks of waiting for parts and waiting for it to get fixed they ended up replacing a condenser (just found this out on the phone). Went to another shop for an oil change and was told the transmission lines were leaking. When I tried to have a conversation with the office manager at Birchwood, I was told it was normal to have moisture on the lines after the condenser is replaced. I wanted to if it was normal to still have "moisture" after a week. She didn't know. She said the mechanic said it was a mess under there and I asked if the mechanic cleaned all of the old debris from before off. She said she didn't know, I should have asked for the mechanic. I told her last time I tried to talk to the mechanic; he told me he doesn't talk to customers, so I asked for her. She was so polite that she hung up on me. Fun Times. Guess I will be paying another shop to correct whatever issues this shop may have missed in their failure to complete the job.

The repairs were covered by my insurance and a check was mailed to Birchwood. Upon receipt of the check being sent, they refused to release my vehicle back to me. I have two children under two and needed my transportation so I went into the shop to pay the bill in full out of pocket and they still refused. They would only accept payment in CASH. Now, I do understand withholding a vehicle until there is cash in hand (although I provided a receipt with check number and issue confirmation) but to ONLY accept payment in cash was beyond ridiculous and disrespectful. They say credit cards are accepted yet I was unable to pay for services rendered because they would have been too inconvenienced to refund me the difference once the check arrived. I will never recommend this shop regardless of the high quality job the mechanics did on my truck.

Was referred to them by the US Forest Service after treating my van a bit too hard up a mountain…read more Went through AAA, who tried to deny me coverage saying the road was unmaintained when it actually was maintained. BJ's advocated for me and was able to talk AAA into covering the tow. One of the drivers, Nick, was able to get my vehicle with no problems and the whole team was super awesome throughout. Huge shoutout to them for getting me out of a sticky situation.

Flat Black was recommended to me by a friend when I was literally stuck on the side of I-5 (on a…read moreweekend!) and needing someone I could tow my car to ASAP. I left the car outside their shop, tossed my key in the key drop, and first thing Monday they gave me a call with a time they'd be able to look at the car. Luckily, the problem was a minor one, and they had it fixed and back on the road in a matter of hours - for less than $50! When my daughter, who lives in Bham, was borrowing my car recently and wanted to get it inspected before considering purchasing it, she dropped it off at Flat Black for a thorough look. They called me that afternoon with a detailed list of what needed to be done, and how the car looked overall. They gave it an oil change, serviced the transmission, and a couple of other things - all in a couple of hours. I got the car back from my daughter yesterday and it's running better than it has in months. It's sometimes hard to feel like you're making a good choice when finding someone trustworthy to take care of your vehicle; but I would not hesitate to bring my car to Flat Black again if it needed anything done.
