I found an amazing donut shop just outside the Halifax docks. The moment you step inside, the amazing smell of fresh donuts hits you, and you can't help but fall in love with this charming little place. The staff is friendly, and the donuts are absolutely outstanding. I tried the crème brûlée and the coconut cream pie donuts, both were soft yeast donuts filled with incredible creams that delivered an explosive burst of flavor with every bite. I definitely should have ordered more. This was an unforgettable experience that has set the bar incredibly high for any donut shop I visit in the future. Came here after googling things to eat in Halifax. They have a pretty good variety of donuts offered, and their menu changes daily. Donuts are nice and soft. My husband loved the Reese cup long John, but found the oreo square disappointing. I loved my maple dip, but my vanilla long John would've been better if it was filled. The menu wasn't exceptionally original or unique on the day we were there, and I can't say it was anything that really knocked my socks off. The donuts are best the day of. I love donuts, so when I saw that Halifax had some cool donut shops, I had to check them out when I was there. I didn't get around to going to Fortune Doughnut, but I made it to Vandal Doughnuts. I got a Blueberries and Cream donut and it was $4.83 taxes in ($4.20 before tax). I thought that for this price the donut was going to be epically delicious. It was not (IMO). I was hugely disappointed. It tasted like an average donut to me. There was some blueberry jelly and whipped cream at the centre and the glazing was blueberry flavoured, so it's a fancier donut, but I personally felt that it was overpriced. I'm from Ottawa, and gourmet donut shops like SuzyQ (which is amazing) and Maverick's (which is also good) only charge about $3 a donut and most people in town find that expensive. I've had epically delicious donuts at Coffee Way in Kingston, ON for $1.40 each, and at Healthy Foods Technologies in Almonte, ON for $1.50 each, so in terms of bang for my buck, I was disappointed. Listen, the donut wasn't bad, I feel that it was a 3-star donut in terms of taste. However, if I paid $1 for a 3-star donut, I would give the place 4 stars. If I paid $2 for a 3-star donut, I would give the place 3 stars. I paid almost $5 for a 3-star donut, so this place is getting 2 stars from me. They used to be amazing when they were "Fortune" now the last 5 times I haven't found a regular chocolate donut, always with weird stuff on top that doesn't give you a great taste. I bought a couple of "Homer's" but they are now vegan and the dough was actually plastic flavour and sticky like taffy, they said they didn't have regulars. The zone is not the best in the city and I only was in that area for the donuts, but I'm not coming back. Just a quick advice, cook more of what really sells instead of having 30 vegan Homer or weird combinations that you can clearly see you haven't sold a single one and it's about to close read more

Owners of Riot Snack bar bring you a sandwich meets doughnut shop located in Gus' Pub. It seems like a strange combo but it works somehow. The artwork on the door, side of the building and on the door next to the cash is bright and adorable! There's a big display lined with gorgeous and unique donuts. The bottom row was the vegan options, only 2 but that's enough to make this donut fiend happy. They have menu board listing the prices of everything and also has their unique sandwich options as well. Four of which can be made vegan and are indicated by the green V. My friend flipped the bill and got us one of each of the donut varieties, as well as a peanut butter bacon burger veganized. We then took a seat over in the pub area. It's an interesting spot. Very old pub style including slot machines which I don't see very often anymore. But it wasn't a bad dining experience. The girl working came over and informed us they were out of the vegan bacon but said they could put extra greens and such in it and that was fine. We chowed down on the first donut while waiting for our food. I believe it was a mocha dipped doughnut. Serious perfection, a real doughnut! Guys, I dream about doughnuts. It's the one thing I always crave to be vegan. This, my friends, was delicious! It was a real fried donut with chocolate glaze frosting on the top. The burgers came out shortly after and they were huge with two patties, veggies and peanut butter. I seriously think it might be my new favourite vegan burger in the city. Even though we were stuffed we wanted our second donut. This one was a Boston creme with green and red frosting swirled across the top. Again, it was the real deal. Oh my god, if you haven't tried this little golden gem stop what you're doing and GO! This place has been blowing up over social media with burgerweek and the doughnut burger they have... yes a doughnut burger!! I only ordered three doughnuts because I knew I'd actually eat an entire box if I got the dozen. My friend got the doughnut burger and a dozen and we fell in love - with the doughnuts !! Personally I never order them, I always find that they're either bland, dry or never satisfying. These are incredible. The doughnut burger is the best thing I've ever tasted. A little spicy but with the glazed doughnut buns it off sets the spice and you just can't stop eating it, we almost got seconds... no judgement allowed. With burger week going on they didn't have too many flavours to choose from so I'm looking forward to this summer when it dies down a bit and we can try the other ones out. I was so happy to find out that they were open Easter Sunday so I scurried in over to get my first bite of Vandal's. I've heard nothing but great things but have always avoided going due to the overwhelming traffic in the area. Boy oh boy, I had no idea I was missing out. I got the zebra donut and the lemon square donut. Both were light, fluffy and delicious. I was genuinely surprised as I've never had such an amazingly baked pastry before. There was no crusty parts, so harder than usual spots. Everything about each donut was consistent. I was also surprised at how well they have perfected the sweetness of each donut - neither were making my mouth tingle with sugar. I was, unfortunately for me, able to eat both donuts and I could have still probably had 2 more. I am also beyond happy at their vegan options - which were going quickly. One Sunday morning I was having breakfast downtown and saw their Instagram post of a Mr. Hankey doughnut!! I LOVE him, so got very excited and headed right there afterwards. You walk in the door at Gus' and the Vandal stand is right there at the entanceway, with a display of maybe a dozen varieties. I got several all bc they looked cute. They are your standard donut and I would compare them taste-wise to the vanilla dips from Tim's, pretty moist, sweet, crazy fresh. The UFO one had a neon lime filling while the others had no filling. The chocolate peanut butter one is good, and I find more filling. For $1.85 each I think, it's a good deal to just in for one as a snack. My 2nd visit around 2pm on a sunny, freezing Saturday in Feb - the place was busy! A dozen in line? Staff were going as fast as they could to replenish. I tried the coconut chai this time and it was quite good! The Root Beer Float was ok, had no root beer flavor, which I found disappointing. The Skor Twist is really good, but larger, almost as big as two donuts. The Strawberry Shortcake is very good, quite heavy and I ate over maybe 20 mins. 3rd visit on a cloudy chilly Tuesday in March - we were the only customers in the place. I tried the Freak Lunchbox donut with gummy worms and sour stretchy candy. So pretty! Had no unique flavor, but that's okay. Same with the blueberry dip - expected the icing to have at least a bit of blueberry flavorful, but not really. I like these for the look and they are very fresh (even if other donut shops are fresh, these taste fresher). The Sensual Sensation may be my favorite for taste, with a Ferrero Rocher sitting atop Nutella, with crushed nuts on chocolate icing of a white donut. The vegan Birthday Cake is like a standard vanilla dip, but still good. The Froot Loop one was good, sweet and reminded me a bit of a popcorn kind of flavor, but think that's just me. The Maple Bacon is favorful! For Cinqo de Mayo, they made a plain donut with Mexico flag colors, which was fun. The orange chocolate one was quite good, with a definite orange flavor (moreso than say the blueberry dip had). The Wildberry was yummy! (Purple swirly icing with a wildberry jelly filling, topped with some crushed nuts). The rum & coke is very tasty and filling, albeit no rum flavoring that I could detect, the filling tastes just like the candy Coke bottles that sit on top of the donut. The Reese's Pieces is great but simple, a vanilla donut topped with whole pieces. The Marge (chocolate donut, blue icing, rainbow sprinkles) is simple but tasty. The Kit Kat break donut is large, rectangular with an entire Kit Kat bar inside! (one of their premiums for $4.20) but worth it! The Orange Creamsicle got me excited but it didn't have a strong flavor at all I found. Their "Strange Brew" donut is great - red & black checkered icing on a white donut, filled with tons of coffee-flavored filling, and it is very filling. Their novelty donuts are always clever...a Trump one, and a "Kinky" Trump one for Pride week were hilarious and still delicious. The Mint Aero is good, with chunks of the bar broken atop a double chocolate donut, which may have peppermint extract. The Blueberry Cheesecake is excellent, with a cream cheese layer and big blob of filling, but not as messy to eat as it sounds. The Cookie Monster is so cute, his face in blue sprinkles on chocolate cake donut, with an Oreo stuffed in its mouth. The Girl Guide Cookie donut is delicious with coconut (obviously US styled, as Canada Girl Guide cookies are not like this). The Mud Pie is very good, white donut with chocolate and cookie crumble dip? And the hole filled with Nutella. The Cookies & Cream is pretty good, on a chocolate cake donut with white icing, Oreo crumble? The Cinnamon Toast Crunch one is very good, with lots of whole cereal pieces atop white icing and a caramel (?) drizzle on a white donut. The Unicorn Poop is good, pretty colored sugar and purple icing on a white donut with some kind of filling. The Twixtster (?) is a giant $4.20 one similar to the Kitkat, where it has a whole Twix stick inside a rectangular white donut, with white icing & chocolate drizzle. Filling! The "Basic Bish" aka pumpkin spice filled donut is very good, with cinnamon sugar and whipped cream on top? The Oscar the Grouch is cute and same as the Cookie Monster on a chocolate cake donut. Been back many times with a line of 20 people ahead of me one Saturday at 10am. One customer ordered customized donuts without telling the pick-up time, so that held the line up a bit. And they will make ANYTHING for a custom order - even hilarious erotic ones! read more

I've been here a few times, but mainly to get doughnuts. I did get a few sandwiches but find them decent and not exceptional. I have to admit that I miss Ace burger so maybe that's part of it. The doughnuts are good. I find the icing much too sweet though so I always end up going for a fritter or a filled doughnut (and removing the icing). If the icing wasn't so sweet and thick, I'd probably give this place four stars. Delicious - some of the best doughnuts I've ever had! I got the strawberry pop tart, which was a giant piece of heaven. The amount of filling is quite generous and each bite was bursting with flavour. My friend got the Homer, which she loved. We eventually returned during our trip and I got the classic chocolate dip.
