I was doing some spring cleaning this weekend when I came across that jewelry drawer -- you know, the one with all the nice pieces that other people have gifted you but you never actually wear. With summer (and travel plans) around the corner, I decided this drawer could be put to better use. A quick Google search landed me on this spot. I've never bought/sold gold or anything (I've never really been into a pawn shop) so I wasn't really sure what to expect. It's conveniently located just across Cambie Bridge though, so I figured I'd take a stab. When I walked in I was greeted by a staff member and the cuuuutest little dog! I explained why I'd come in and handed over my loot. The staff member ran some quick tests on the jewellery to make sure it was real and check out the quality. He explained what he was doing through each step and it was actually all pretty interesting. Since all of the pieces I brought in were gifts, I wasn't really sure how much any of it was worth. I was so excited when I found out it was just over $500 that had been sitting in my drawer this whole time. Apparently gold prices have been really good lately (so the employee informed me) -- win! As he started writing me a cheque, I noticed they were selling some nice jewelry in the store, too. I ended up finding a beautiful pair of diamond studs for my mom's birthday! Nothing wrong with these guys. My experience was mostly positive. I had some 18k gold which of course they tried to lowball me on. Luckily I had done my homework & pointed out one of their competitors was offering a rate about 30% higher. I didn't need to produce any written quote to back this up, the girl merely checked out the competitors website right there on her laptop on the desk. So, no problem, they gave me the higher rate. Also no service fee or anything like that. It would have been a full five stars, but for the fact that the girl took so long in the back getting my money that I began to think she absconded out the back door with my gold! I had asked for cash but she finally came back saying they didn't have enough on hand. So we settled on part cash, part cheque. About a month ago we visited VancouverGold to get an opinion on a diamond ring. Larysa (the gemologist) performed the diamond evaluation. She was extremely warm and professional, and did a thorough examination of the ring. The entire process took about 30 minutes and the equipment she used appeared to be of high caliber. Later we took the ring to another appraiser to get a second opinion and Larysa's grading was 100% accurate. One of the pieces was weighed wrong and was actually heavier than he said it was and the other piece he couldn't recognize even though it was hallmarked.He was very young and didn't seem to have very much experience at what he was doing.He definitely wasn't able to handle this very simple transaction. I was super happy with this place. They do exactly what they say, which is to offer a fair payout for the gold value of any item. If its a coin that's pure gold and weighs 13 grams, that's what they'll pay you for. If you've got a gold ring that's 50% gold and weighs 10 grams, they'll pay you for 5 grams of gold. It's pretty simple, makes no difference whether you've got an appraisal from a jeweller that shows how much they ripped you off. If they say your ring is worth $3500 then I suggest you see whether they'll actually pay you that much for it. I always trust whoever's writing the cheque. read more

What to do with the (many) gold earrings where I only have one of a pair or have broken pieces ? With Christmas coming up, I thought I'd see if I could sell them for extra cash. After talking to friends of friends, Vancouver Gold seemed to be one of the more reputable places to take my small collection of odds and ends. The office is discreetly located in an office tower on Broadway near Ash. They take appointments after hours, but if you go during regular business hours it's first come first serve. I didn't think it would be busy, but was I ever wrong. The price of gold is at an all time high and (like me) some people are trying to get some extra Christmas money. Appointments can take any where from 15 mins to about 1 hr depending on how many what type of pieces need to be assessed. They test the gold for purity (they don't accept plated or filled) and if there are gems, they need to remove them since they need to be able to melt the gold. This is no seedy back room dealer. The offices are clean, the staff are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. They test and weigh the gold then calculate the cost. There is no obligation to accept their offer . If you do decide to sell your pieces, you have to provide ID. You MUST be the owner. NO STOLEN GOODS. read more
