I needed to have my wife's jewellery appraised by a certified gemologist for insurance purposes. I was surprised to find only two listed for Vancouver by the Canadian Jewellers Association. There are probably more who do not belong to CJA but I could not find them. I went with Imperial Gem after speaking with Harold by phone. I was impressed with his straight forward approach. I was not disappointed. He evaluated 12 pieces in 3 hours and prepared a thorough detailed report complete with photos. The cost was per piece and was reasonable. Although I only met him once, I have no doubt about his professionalism and integrity. According to his web site (imperialgemlab.com) he also provides appraisals through leading Jewellers at various BC locations. BTW, I did check with Birk's and they have to send their appraisal items to Montreal and the cost is at least double what Imperial charges. The five star rating may seem over the top but I honestly can't find reason to give less other than the difficulty finding a parking spot at his office. read more

We had six items appraised when Harold was at one of his satellite locations (Lawlor Jewellers in Ladner). Having an appointment there was quite easy and convenient, and both Harold and Janice (at Lawlor) were very helpful such as explaining different types (replacement vs estate values) of appraisals. Harold's appraisal (estate values) and documentation were thorough and the appraisal fee very reasonable. We then followed up with Harold by email to get insurance replacement values which he did quickly and again with excellent documentation and very reasonable fees.
