I had the worst customer service experience yesterday with a colorist named Randi at the VA Highlands location. From the minute I walked in she was extremely rude (I was running a little late but asked if they would still take me and they said no problem). It was my very first time getting my hair professionally colored in a salon so naturally I had some questions like if I went all over dark, would balayage or highlights be an option in the future if I chose a specific color. I also simply asked if she would be doing a strand test since I heard that is standard especially because I had a few diff colors in my hair. Apparently asking questions is not allowed when someone is about to put permanent hair color in your hair, this set her off and she then refused to do my hair AFTER she had already mixed the color and had me sign the waiver. She wasted my time (and hers) for no apparent reason when I was already under a time constraint with a flight. This is extremely unprofessional behavior and all the salon was able to do was rebook me for someone who charged more the next day at a time that was not convenient for me but I had no choice at this point. The new colorist was way better and did a great job, but the whole experience really left a negative impact and I have been getting my haircut here for 7 years so I wasn't a first time customer at the salon. I'm not sure why a customer isn't allowed to ask questions prior to getting their hair colored for the first time-- naturally there will be some apprehensiveness. Really did not need attitude and it ruined my entire day. read more

I had my first experience with the Van Michael Salon in the midtown location with a stylist named Samuel who was fantastic! He really wanted to know exactly what you wanted and asked direct questions to understand better. The tools and products used here are great and the price is much more affordable than other places. The parking is validated which I didn't know the first time I went so I ended up paying for parking, but just park in the deck in the back and bring your parking ticket in to the salon for it to be validated! I was about 15-20 mins late to my appointment due to the construction in the area and finding parking, but Samuel was kind enough to still take me in. The location is also next to a bunch of food places so if you are hungry afterwards you can satisfy most cravings at a walking distance of the salon. read more

From Los Angeles, but here in Atlanta working on a television show. Needed a men's hair cut very badly. Choosing a place to go when out of town and trust my haircut will turn out how I love, is always a risky shot in the dark. Not this time. I based my decision to try VMS by Yelp star rating and reading a few reviews, then called and was booked with Samantha. Parking was a breeze (meter), the interior is sleek, classy and bright! Samantha greeted me happily as soon as I arrived! She's so pleasant and directed me to her chair where we consulted for a few moments about my wishes and the difficulties of my hair. She gladly accepted my offer to look at some pics of my previous favorite cut for reference. Samantha offered a relaxation shoulder massage (I declined) then washed and began cutting my hair. It was very easy conversing with Samantha. I could immediately tell I was (literally) in good hands. When the cut was completed it was an almost identical match to the pic I had shown her. Please, SPARE YOURSELVES. This salon is a factory. No matter how hard your stylist tries to sell themselves to you, they probably are not even giving you their real name. I found that out years after going there. Most of them use fake names. Which is weird. You build a "relationship" with your stylist and you don't even know their real name. Every service was rushed. My colorist was ALWAYS late getting to me and typically seemed hung over or disinterested. Then would rush through the service to get me to my haircut on time. The only reason I continued going back for a year and a half was because it was walking distance from my house. No one working there seems particularly thrilled or happy to be there. I wouldn't either, to be honest. The salon itself is old, smelly and dingy. The bathrooms remind me of a truck stop. The front side where all the cutting happens is not that bad. But the back area where you get your hair colored, smells like mold and dead rats. For this salon to be charging the amount they are for their services, you'd think the facilities would reflect that expense....but just the opposite! I now go to Salon Red in Candler Park. They are a breath of fresh air! The staff doesn't dress in ALL BLACK and they're all super friendly and the space is airy and open. They also give you WINE!!!!! My stylist spends so much time and detail with me and I never feel rushed! THEY ALSO HAVE A PARKING LOT!!!!!! Do yourself a favor...go elsewhere. Especially to see Beth at Salon Red! read more

Put all of your anxiety aside...Van Michael will take good care of you and make you look fabulous. I just moved to Atlanta and was freaking out about having somebody new touch my hair. I checked a ton of places out and luckily, I chose wisely. I love how there's a ton of people that write reviews about how awesome their hair turned out but all they have to show for it is some vague profile picture with not-so-great hair...so to prove my results, I have included a pic I took afterwards under the Van Michael yelp photos. So for starters, I called a few weeks in advance and I talked with a sweet accommodating fellow which started out the great impression. We discussed my price point and that I didn't want "New Talent" so he could match my goals. I told him I wanted someone that specialized in beautiful blondes...thus he gave me Boston. And for my cut, he gave me Mekaylah, which thanks to other reviews, I had already heard how amazing she is. Oh, and FYI, don't try to use their website to book if you are a new customer...that only works if you are established. Thankfully, when I arrived, I was able to use their free parking that is sectioned off in a lot up the street next to the CVS...No stressing about rushing around to find a parking spot. I was instantly welcomed in and given a tour and while I gowned up, they got me a drink. Boston came to get me within minutes. So, for you less hipster-types, he is going to walk over with his Duck Dynasty beard, dressed in black with a prada belt on...do not make any hasty judgments!!! He is gentle, married with cats, an artsy background, and knows what he is doing! Just sit down, enjoy the clever conversation, trust him, and let him give you kick ass color! After my rendezvous with Boston, he walked me over to Mekaylah. Her and I instantly hit it off. She asked the right questions to figure out what I wanted, and BAM!, in minutes she took my haircut to meh to fabulous foxy lady! This is probably the best cut I have ever had! I think my partial highlights ran me about $110 and my cut was $55ish. I ended up getting a product to take home so my total bill was $185. So, all my fears are gone and I am totally sold. While usually I rave about Van Michael this review will not have that same enthusiasm. When I moved to Atlanta 3 years ago, I asked my Stylist friend which salon in Atlanta is the best, preferably an Aveda Salon because I always have the best experiences there. I've been going to the Highlands Van Michaels consistently since then. I have always been satisfied with my hair. The people are very friendly and I love the massages. I got my hair done last Saturday. I chopped about 6 inches off (my hair is very long) and I needed a partial mix of highlights and lowlights. Color: The color is okay, I asked for more dark lowlights but I'm okay with it. The problem came when I went home and realized that the bleach had fried my hair in at least three places that I have found. One of them being right near the root by my face so it's very noticeable. My color stylist mentioned he was tired, I get it - it was Saturday at 3pm but c'mon, you do this everyday. But my hair is FRIED. My coworkers can't even believe it. It looks like someone in beauty school did it. I was honestly shocked and a little saddened because I like the atmosphere in Van Michael and did I mention that I love the massages?? Cut: The cut was well below par. This guy has been trimming my hair for 3 years and has always done a good job so I'm not sure what happened there. This is the first time I have asked him to chop off a lot of hair and really play with the layers. I have really thick hair, so I have to have layers or it just looks blah. He curled it after he dried and the curls looked great, but I had a reservation about the ends being very blunt. As soon as I got home, I washed my hair and flat ironed it so I could see the layers and the ends. To my horror, the ends looked AWFUL. It looked like I put my hair in a pony tail and someone just chopped it off. It was straight and even, I'll give him that. But I need it to be 'piecier' at the bottom since it is so thick. On top of that, the layers around the face were very blunt as well. My ponytail even looked funny. I had to call my boyfriend's hair stylist for an emergency session and have her fix the haircut. I'm having her fix the color after my hair repairs from the damage. For the $167 I paid, I don't think I got a Van Michael Quality Hair Cut or Color. I think I can go elsewhere and find it cheaper and the same or better quality. read more

I had my first trip to the Van Michael Salon today to see Katie to get my eyebrows tamed - she did a first rate job. So many places I've been do a good, satisfactory job, but shape my brows so intricately that they look unnatural and once they start to come back in, it looks TERRIBLE - Katie, on the other hand, worked with what I have so as not to have it look overly shaped and plucked, which I MUCH prefer. Very natural, but also very cleaned up. She was precise and did probably the most painless job I've ever had. I'd definitely recommend going to see Katie - she's the sweetest girl, is super easy to chat with and does a fantastic job. And as a bonus - she's REALLY fast. My experience with this salon was short but ohhhh so not sweet. I set an appointment for a haircut with Jerry based on a referral. I received two text messages from VM confirming my upcoming appt today at 3pm which I really appreciated. I arrived around 2:30pm today. I parked on the street ($5), walked in and was greeted by two ladies. I introduced myself and gal with long brown hair looked at me a bit oddly and said my appt was with someone else. (The name was similar, but in fact, not Jerry.) I said, "I specifically reserved this appt with Jerry based on a wonderful recommendation and I was told by the receptionist when I booked the appt that everything was all set." The woman told me that Jerry was not even there today- so- who ever booked me on Tuesday afternoon totally jacked up my appt. The receptionist apologized and then said that I could rs for Jerry's next (evening) appt which was 2 weeks from now. I was not ok with that, expressed my discontent, and at this pt, she did not seem really empathetic for this inconvenience and the fact that their receptionist messed up. She never offered to get a manager for me to chat with or place me on a wait list for Jerry- just "her next appt is xyz", take it or leave it kind of vibe. I was really excited about my haircut at VM with Jerry but left the salon with my hair untouched and feeling frustrated and disappointed. I will not be going back after today's poor customer service experience. read more

O'Neil at Van Michael's is the best! I have long wavy hair and usually wait a little too long between cuts because I like to keep my hair long. O'Neil is great at getting rid of my split ends, but keeps my hair at the length I want. He does some long layers and adds shaping around my face and it always looks amazing! He is also super nice and friendly, always asking about my family, friends, boyfriend, etc. I'd recommend him to anyone who's visiting Atlanta or lives in Atlanta looking for a great, personable stylist who makes you feel really comfortable. Parking and traffic in the Highlands can be tricky so plan to get there a few minutes early. read more

Quality and expertise is just a standard theme among Van Michael Salons. This shop had a remodel about two years ago. The layout and environment are much better, more suited to the clientele and locale. The staff is friendly and helpful--bringing tea to clients, explaining treatments, guiding people to and from different areas of the store, etc. The company values communication with the clients, from the moment you dial up and make an appointment to the moment you step foot out the door. The best hair stylist on the planet happens to work from this location. O'Neil is a master with the scissors. I've never been to someone who actually made one of my short hairstyles look longer. He's brilliant with dimensions, and with relationships between different sections of hair. As an added bonus, he's pretty witty too, and be sure to ask him about NASCAR. read more

I have thin fine hair. Most hair stylist doesn't know how to work with it - He listens to you and send you home with styling tips so you can do it. I lost my job a couple times in this economy. I tried to save money by going another salon. My hair looks horrible now. O'neal @ Van Michael location in VA Highland is the BEST stylist in Atlanta. I have always been please with him. I love this Van Michael salon, and my stylist is the best! Tami Le is creative and high-energy and just so sweet. I love to try new things with my hair -- and Tami is really good about listening to me ramble on about what I'm thinking before she asks a few pointed questions and gets going. Amazingly, she is spot-on every time. I have never had a less-than-fabulous haircut from her. Seriously, never. Whoop whoop!! The others in this salon are equally cool. It's has a quintessential Va-Hi vibe -- friendly and easy-going. PS If you find a stylist you like, get on their cancellation call list. I must say that everyone associated with Van Michael's are experienced and professional. Color and cut ran about $200, $255 total with one product and tip. So, bring your wallet and enjoy the overall experience and lovely results. I will be returning for permanent straightening and more. Jerry was so incredible! She got me in last-minute and worked wonders on my new cut. She talked me through my picture and discussed all the specifics, and then checked in with me FOUR times during my haircut to make sure it was proceeding as planned. This is my first yelp review, and I'm reviewing because I have to let everyone know how great this place is. From the moment I walked in the door to the moment I sat down the entire staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming. Christy was my stylist today, and before she even did anything she was on her iPad helping me find the perfect look. She walked me through different ways I could wear the same haircut, and when she made certain I was completely comfortable with the look, she led me to get shampooed and treated me to a 5 minute head massage. Feeling completely relaxed at this point, she led me back to begin cutting. The haircut was admittedly long (she admits she is a perfectionist) but I didn't even notice the time going by as we were in conversation the whole time. When she finished I almost didn't even recognize myself as we completely changed my look, which I now love. The atmosphere of the salon is upscale and trendy, with edm music playing in the background. 5/5 stars will definitely return. read more
