I wanted to save review #200 for a special review! I cannot say enough good things about Dr Van Gompel. I have seen hundreds of drs for various health needs, but dr Van Gompel is by far one of the finest drs you can come across. I have been seeing Dr Van Gompel for nearly 2 years now for an extremely rare injury that occurred after taking a medication, resulting in nerve damage. Dr van gompel took the time to thoroughly research my condition, order tests and refer me to the appropriate places to get the answers I needed. He seemed to be one of the few doctors that genuinely cared and wasn't going to just let me slip through the cracks. He was on point with his analysis of my condition and all the things that he suggested I do to get better when other doctors said there was nothing I could do. As a provider, I not only have complete confidence in his expertise and direction for my own treatment plan but the office I used to work for referred all our patients to Dr Van Gompel, wo any reservation. He is extremely knowledgeable (not just in podiatry!) and up to date with the latest research and techniques. I love how he will not just read a result from an imaging study but will open up the CD images and show you the images and explain what is going on. Even though he specializes in podiatry, I always feel like he treats the whole person and gives solid fact based recommendations that make sense whether it be in neurology or immunology or other. Dr Van Gompel is also extremely patient. I never feel rushed and he sincerely listens. He is very personable, humble, and down to earth, so that I never feel bad about asking questions or sharing my concerns. I feel comforted in knowing he genuinely cares for the overall health of his patients and will not give up on me even when other drs may do so. He is the first dr where I always feel better after each appointment and that I have a greater understanding of my condition each time I see him. I was very lucky to have seen Dr. Van Gompel. When 3 other doctors, including one from Stanford, misdiagnosed my fractured ankle as merely sprains of sorts (after several X-rays and 1 MRI). For about a year, I suffered with pain at the heel of my foot. I had gone to an orthopedic surgeon, a podiatrist, as well as a neurosurgeon prior to meeting Dr Joshua Van Gompel. The neurosurgeon suggested that I had compressed nerves and would benefit from a tarsal tunnel release. I thought about getting a second opinion before jumping into surgery. My orthopedic surgeon referred me to Dr Van Gompel. My first meeting with him went great. He examined my foot, looked at my MRI and also did an ultrasound guided injection. He agreed that the tarsal tunnel release was the way to go. The next time that I met Dr Van Gompel was right before surgery. He stopped by to check on me before I was wheeled in for surgery. The surgery went smoothly and as expected. I was put into a boot for what I was told would be a couple of weeks. When I returned to get my stitches out, I saw his assistant, Ava. When the stitches were removed, it was apparent to me that the skin had not healed to the point that I would have expected. In addition, I brought up the point that, post surgery, I had some nerve damage to the top of my foot that felt like someone had put a hot coal on my foot and burned, quite often, about 40% of the time. I was told that I probably had my shoes on too tight. I was told to continue wearing the boot until my skin healed completely. Over a week had gone by and I contacted the office again and sent a picture. I was told to come in to be seen. I sat in the waiting room for 45 minutes before I was called in to be seen by Ava again, not Dr Van Gompel. I was given gauze and bandages as well as a prescription to keep my wound clean and take the infection out. I was then told to come back for a follow up a couple of weeks later. I showed up for my appointment and was left in the waiting room for 45 minutes, again. I told the staff that I am respectful of their time and would appreciate them being respectful of mine. I demanded to be brought in next because people who had come in after me were being called back while I continued to sit. They did call me in next but then let me know that there were two or three patients that would be seen ahead of me. I immediately walked out of his office and got into my car. The office staff called me and said that if I came back into the office that they would see me immediately. I told them that I was already headed home and wouldn't come back to see his assistant again. They said that he would make a point to see me if I came back. I am sorry but that was just too little, too late. My surgery was September 27th of 2022. Today is February 20th of 2023. I haven't seen Dr Van Gompel since before my surgery and his office has never reached out to find out that my wound has finally healed and actually looks pretty good. The nerve damage has also subsided. The sad part about the whole thing is that the surgery didn't relieve my original problem. I am exactly where I was prior to meeting Dr Van Gompel and I now have to find a new doctor to start analyzing my problem so that I can try to get relief. I am in pain every day of my life and it is really wearing on me. read more

Dr van gompel has 2 of the rudest staff i've ever come across in a doctors office. One is the girl with the long, fake eyelashes at the front desk and the second one is the girl who showed me to the exam room. The second girl ordered me to remove my sock and shoe as she walked out the room, not even courteously standing in the room asking me to remove my shoe (I don't wear socks) and then turning to leave the room. 5 stars isn't good enough to rate Dr. Van Gompel, he deserves a MINIMUM OF 10! Back in April I had a sudden pain in the bottom of my heel. There were no cuts or anything that would show an injury. I went to my primary Doctor who then referred me to a Podiatrist. Neither had a definitive diagnosis for me. I then went to the ER due to the excruciating pain. Once again, no clear diagnosis. 8 days of HORRIBLE 24/7 pain, 5 types of pain killers, and 2 X-rays later and I was referred by a friend to Dr. Van Gompel. As soon as I walked in (or hobbled in), he gave me the correct diagnosis (along with an extremely welcoming personality being that I was a new patient). We scheduled a surgery time and date for later that week. 2 days short of the scheduled date, I couldn't take the pain anymore so he rushed me straight in to surgery (with the proper MRI and blood tests beforehand of course). Mind you, we called him at around 6am that morning and he PROMPTLY returned our call. Due to the type of surgery I had, I was left with a hole in my heel about the diameter of a quarter and roughly an inch deep. This required gauze to be packed inside which needed changing everyday. Dr, Van Gompel did all that he could to help us find an in-home Nurse to do the changing of the gauze. When the Nurse was no longer needed, Dr. Van Gompel showed my Father how to change the gauze for me. I have been seeing Dr. Van Gompel for the last few Friday's as scheduled. During EVERY appointment he is always cheerful and helpful. In addition, he answers every question as well as takes his time with my family and I. His staff is quite helpful as well and the office is kept very clean along with a friendly environment. Dr. Van Gompel is definitely one of the BEST Doctors I've ever dealt with. He rid me of the worst physical pain I've ever experienced (and I hope I never have to experience a pain like that again)! Simply put...AWESOME!!!! My mother had a growth on her foot, so we were referred to Dr. Van Gompel. I thought it would be a simple procedure to remove the growth and it was. However, Dr. V asked a lot of questions about my elderly mother. He noticed that she had a swollen ankle and proceeded to do an exam on her legs. Dr. V. pointed out that my mom had edema. He suggested compression socks and said it could be indicative of something more serious. HE WAS RIGHT!! It turns out that my mom was having other health issues that were causing swelling. All of this because Doctor took the time and effort to do a thorough exam and asked a lot of questions. In addition, I found out that my dad had seen Dr. V. 2 times several years before my mom's visit. I don't know how Dr. V. put it all together, but he remembered my dad. I was completely shocked. He even remembered a piece of unimportant information my dad had mentioned. AMAZING! Dr. Van Gompel is caring, kind, compassionate and has a wonderful bedside manner. Dr. Von G is the man!! I was cursed with my mom's scrawny ankles. In August I had a terrible fall involving a step ladder which completely tore apart my ankle. Evulsion fracture, torn tendons, cartiladge damage...I messed it up bad. I was referred to Dr. Von Gompel through my Medi-cal coverage and honestly feel like I ended up with the best possible doctor for my injury that I could have gotten. He's nice, straight forward, and very good at explaining the details. He comes off like an expert without being condescending like some doctors do. We tried to avoid surgery but it was too bad of an injury and needed to be fixed. My surgery was two weeks ago and I have to say that over all it was a pleasant experience. And while Dr. Von G has always been very nice in his office, he was a different person at the surgery center - he was extremely down to earth and was clearly excited to do the surgery. He even cracked a few jokes that I'm still chuckling about. I went for my two week follow-up today and I am so incredibly happy! He tested my ankle and it is super strong. So far, I have had zero pain. Two weeks in a hard cast, a month in the boot, and I should be able to wear cute shoes by summer!! Thank you Dr. Von Gomple!! A true magician ! We were very down with the news of the surgery from the ER and we went to Dr Gompel. The rooms are really well maintained and there was very little waiting period for us . The doctor patiently explained to us what is going and he also knew we wanted to see what he was saying as well so he made us see the ultra sound and made us spot the damage . Impressive ! He had our trust by the time we were packing up. He usually does his surgeries on a particular day but he said this condition couldn't wait longer so with 48 hours he took us to the operation room . We have called him during the 2 weeks of rest due an emergency and he got back to us within 10-15 minutes. And also got us an appointment the next day to make sure everything was ok. Except the fact it's really difficult to get an appointment ( if you call them they ask you to hold for atleast 5 mins before you get your message across ) everything else is perfect . I just called to request a estimate for a visit. Since I do not have insurance, I was hoping to get a decent estimate of costs. The First Lady I spoke with at the Fremont site was nice and helpful. She transferred me to a second lady that kept on over talking when I was speaking and said over and over again 'like I said'. The problem being that she never said anything to me about my pricing questions clearly. To have this type of customer service and charged $200-$450 depending on this issue kinda sucks. If someone does not have insurance, then don't you think it matters if it is near the $200 or $450. I mean even an example of 1 visit + 1 X-Ray = $225 is a reasonable answer. But I did not get a reasonable respond. I felt like I will have to bring somewhere from $200 to $450 dollars and be at the mercy of whomever to fork out the cash. If you don't have insurance, I would not contact the Fremont office. They may not pay you much attention. If you do have insurance, they probably would treat you with more care. read more

I visited Dr Van Gompel on the 27th of August 2018 and I have to say super doctor love his bedside manner. I knew I wanted this doctor as my orthopedic surgeon (after extensive research). All the reviews are so true he's amazing. Will know more on the 18th when I have my foot fusion. I am expect nothing but the best from him. He has such extensive knowledge and his ability to listen and not rush you means the world to me. I've been seeing Dr. J. Van Gompel for about six months now. I LOVE that he doesn't rush into surgery at first sight. He actually tried to fix my very painful ankle. I had seen another doctor previous to Dr. Van Gompel. This doctor told me that I was probably going to die within five days! What?????? I immediately sought out my personal doctor who referred me to Dr. Van Gompel. My first visit he gave me a cortisone shot. I totally panicked because everyone had told me how much they hurt. I swear to you, I never felt a thing! I was 100% out of pain by the end of the day. Fast forward six months later, cortisone shot wore off, I'm still in pain, I did the cam boot for 9 weeks to no avail. I had surgery on the ankle 12 days ago by his recommendation, and I haven't had any pain in those 12 days! Not even after the surgery! I was on my feet the same day!!! I love this man! I'd give him 10 stars, 100 stars if I could! His demeanor with his patients is awesome! He didn't care how many questions I had, he never rushed me...ever! Not once! FIND ANOTHER DMP- Joshua Van Gompel should NOT even be practicing medicine. Original appointment for Wed 12/22/21 at 2 pm. I called at 1:30 since I was running a few minutes late. I was told your appointment was for Monday 12/20 at 2 pm!!!! (2 days ago) I NEVER got a call form their office. Made a 2nd appt. for Monday 1/24 at 2 pm. I cancelled this on Friday 12/21 due to Covad concerns. Then I started growing an in skin nail in a different toe, so I called back & made an apppt for 2/16 at 12:45. The next day I get a call form their office Joshua Van Gompel doesn't want to see you & is referring you to his brother Gabriel! I asked why? Because you cancelled 2 appointments - I said your office cancelled the first one without even telling me about it. Anyway, then I get a call from their office that the brother Gabe does not want to see you either! So, neither Joshua or Gabriel should be practicing medicine. A so called "doctor" who turns down patients for no reason or for having cancelled 1 appointment should NOT BE A DOCTOR. The ONLY reason I even tried seeing this clown was because my general physician nurse insisted that I do because she herself has been going there for years! I am going to get her to switch. The other pdiatrist I consulted just wanted to fuse my toe joint or shoot it up with steroids. But more than that, he has the best bedside manner of any of my doctors. I'm another very impressed patient of Dr.Van Gompel. I've got several issues with my feet and ankles. Some complicated, some not. He has reviewed my diagnostic test (X-ray, MRI) results with me and is excellent at translating the technical jargon. He has a natural ability to put you at ease and communicates in simple terms. Thanks to Dr. Van Gompel I truly understand what my specific problems are and how to move forward in the Pre-Surgical process. In the interim he has administered a couple of very helpful Cortisone shots to relieve foot and ankle pain. Barely felt either shot due to his outstanding technique. Can't say enough great things about Dr VG and his practice! My 10 yo daughter who is a competitive athlete broke her toe at summer camp and it wasn't healing quickly. We had done two sets of films from other providers which both were both negative for a break. Sure enough after an MRI we found out there was a break. Since I used Yelp in my search to find a good doctor, I feel I should add my experience here, also. I just had my two week followup appointment with Dr Van Gompel, after having toe surgery. Basically, I have to agree with all the other reviews praising everything about this doctor. Dr Van Gompel and his nurse practitioner are very professional and knowledgable. They both have the best bedside manner that I have experienced so far in the medical field. Before, during and after my surgery, I was made to feel relaxed and completely cared for. I had almost zero pain, little swelling and just a small amount of bruising. I highly recommend Dr Van Gompel to anyone looking for an excellent Podiatrist. read more
