An upbeat salon, up to date on styles & products, great customer service & pretty easy an appointment

Really having a hard time recommending due to follow thru and communication. Wish it wasn't the case, but I'm no longer a happy customer.

Honestly just sad. I got my hair dyed and cut here right before my graduation in May. As I was getting my hair washed the stylist kept swiping my ears causing not only my mask to come undone but also ripping out one of my earrings. My earring unfortunately went down the drain. After bringing this to my stylist attention she didn't seem to care. She had another stylist look for it for about 5 min and then didn't say another word about it. I was sitting in the chair trying to hold back tears as that pair of earrings meant a lot to me. They didn't offer me anything for the loss of my earring and didn't seem to care about it at all. My hair didn't look great, honestly the worst cut and dye I've ever had, but I didn't even care because I just wanted to get out of there. Honestly the worst experience at a salon I've ever had. Would NOT recommend. read more

When I first visited Valor & Violet, I was physically a 6, at best (see before photo on left). Not only did a stylish and sexy hair style elude me, but my self confidence seemed so far from its potential and purpose. After my first experience, as what i received was far more than a "haircut", I walked out a different man. I continue to get my bi-weekly makeovers with Kari, who has helped me physically morph into a 9.25 from the shoulders up. Looking for a luxurious, modern salon with impeccable service and affordable prices? Of course you are. Valor and Violet is exactly what you would expect from a high end Aveda salon in a mid sized city. Good news is that it's actually here in Ames and reasonably priced. I was referred to the co-owner Josh when I moved to Ames over a year ago because I have naturally curly (3b) hair. He was previously at another salon in town. Finding a stylist who knows how to work with and appreciates the needs of curly hair is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack. Hint: it takes very specific training that isn't readily available. I mean, Josh knows about and supports co-washing for heaven's sakes!He's the only person in Ames I trust with my hair. When I heard Josh was opening his own salon, there was no question that I would follow him and support his journey. Valor and Violet is beautiful, fresh and clean. The modern wood paneled feature wall separating the checkin and service areas perfectly represents the aesthetic and environment: organic, clean, relatable, effortless. The wash area, color bar and cutting stations are all arranged in the same space behind the wood wall giving the salon a social and welcoming atmosphere. You're not ushered off to different rooms for each step in the process! I've never felt so comfortable in a salon. It's very well designed and well lit. It's easy to feel transported to another time and place- a relaxing zen like one- inside Valor and Violet. I love that the color bar is in plain view. I enjoy watching my color get mixed and knowing exactly what's happening! I also like that the bar serves as an actual bar where I was able to get two cups of delicious Aveda tea. Yum! The fact that this is an Aveda, plant-based product salon should also not be overlooked. On my recent visit, Valor and Violet made me feel like family. The salon's mascot, a rescued chihuahua named Violet, encourages the familial atmosphere. Violet greeted me at the door when I arrived, came to me for pets during my service and even tried to follow me out! I really hope you'll join me in supporting the journey two incredible stylists are embarking upon. Worst and most expensive haircut I've ever received. I am so displeased I created this account just to write this review. First, Josh was 15 minutes late-not awful, but not a great start. We never got a good conversation going; in fact, he talked more with his coworkers than with me. I did not feel like a priority during the haircut, but perhaps conversation is not for everyone. What really bothered me was that after I gave a very short explanation of what I wanted, he did not ask me how I liked things during the haircut (maybe I was expected to speak up?). He finished after 20 minutes with no verbal indication of doing so and proceeded to dry my hair and say I was done. Even the cheaper ($30-$40) salons in my old city would ask if I wanted my hair shorter at each step and show me the back after they were done. They would also take 25+ minutes carefully cutting my hair. Upon a close examination at home, the sides of my hair were uneven and the top and front were still too long, even looking like they were barely cut. I did some quick fixes to make my hair look more even. The price was about $50 and I tipped 15% on top of that-it's a habit, which I regretted immediately. This was more like a $20 haircut considering the time and quality. I will not be coming back and I'm looking forward to see what the other salons in Ames have to offer. So I was in town on business, and really needed a new gel polish. Called they got me in on a Wednesday in 20 minutes. While I was with Madeline doing my nails, we talked about the terrible hair color I had in Ohio at a salon.....she proceeded to say "I may have time if you have time?"......ummmm... YES please!!! I could tell that she knew what she was doing and did a beautiful job getting rid of my red/eggplant hues...in exchange for these caramel beauties....not to mention a beautiful gel nail manicure! Wish I lived closer, as I would definitely be here as a client! Madeline is wonderful and the salon is modern, clean and smart. read more

Was called twice the day of my appointment that I had made a couple weeks earlier to come in at different times. Then when I hustled there after work for THEIR convenience, I waited around for 5 min before actually being checked in by a receptionist because they were all socializing in the back. I asked for a trim and eyebrow wax. They washed my hair with cold water and barely trimmed off the dead ends. As well as putting way too much product in my hair, making it look greasy. I have been getting my eyebrows waxed for 10 years, and this is the first time I have had 3 ingrown hairs because of a wax. Also the stylist completely ignored when I asked to not wax as much where I have an eyebrow scar, he did so anyways. I will never being going back. read more

I just moved to Ames Iowa from Miami Florida I was afraid that Iowa would not offer the high end service I was use to. I was very wrong Josh was amazing he was very welcoming and asked lots of questions making sure I was completely satisfied with my cut. Review on their Ames location. After my appointment today, I wish I had walked out the minute I checked in. As I try to be more conscious of the holy spirit speaking to me, I do belive I ignored that voice in my head, because I was so desperate and determined to receive a cut and color. It is appropriate, that I share my experience. Customer service was not at check in when I arrived. The staff was not social with me and I felt out of place the minute I checked in. The lack of acknowledgement and atmosphere (music was terrible), throughout the entire appointment made me cringe. They seated me in an over flow chair to color my hair. This chair was in front of a clock in/out station for staff. The staff stood around this station as I awkwardly sat there. No mirror was at my station. Josh was in hiding a lot. There was very little conversation. He didn't check up on me during my wait time before rinsing and of the two hours I spent there, I spent most of it alone in this over flow corner spot. I noticed the staff really enjoy talking amongst themselves than their clients. I felt invisible the whole time I was there or I was an inconvenience. The music was very uncomfortable to hear! Their songs had curse words, such as F*** and spoke of sex very inappropriatly (he was going to pull in and out). It was mix of Rap and R&B. Also the staff- Josh the co owner using it in sentences while carrying on conversation. I understand in 2020 this is common, but I found it to be very unprofessional. I noticed they had clients of all ages in the salon today, I find it hard to believe I would be the only one offended or turned off by this atmosphere. Needless to say I was very uncomfortable and didn't feel at peace through out my appointment. On top of that, for a overall solid color, and trim, I paid $160.00 plus tip. My tip was not significant and I'm sure they were disgusted, but I tip based on experience, this client came out with a nice color and trim, but the atmosphere was very displeasing and the price was WAY to high!!!! I cannot believe my over all payment was $182.00 for a color, cut, and hearing things I cannot unhear. read more
