Unfortunately, in the last 14 months we have had to bring 2 of our dogs here for emergency…read moresituations and euthanasia was necessary. This recent time was on 7/5/2025 with our 11 year old chihuahua mix, Cheyenne. We only had her for 10 months as we adopted her from a shelter at the age of 10. Cheyenne had been at our vet 2 1/2 days previously and was not diagnosed with a serious condition after an examination and lab work. Things went downhill quickly over the holiday, necessitating a visit to Deerfield Emergency Veterinary. As a nurse, I knew the situation was hopeless upon seeing poor Cheyenne's X-Ray. This was the first time I, and my daughter who accompanied me, had to face this first hand. We have owned pets for 30+ years and my husband had always been the one with our pets as they crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Losing a pet is never easy, whether you have them for 13 years or in Cheyenne's case, less than a year. My daughter and I were met with compassion and kindness during the entire visit. We were never rushed, given all the information about the process and staff was always available to answer any and all our questions. We cannot thank all the staff, especially Dr. Lavioe (sp), for making a painful situation less frightening. Thank you again to everyone there. Hopefully we will not see you again but know where to go if ever faced with this again. God bless.

I first took my cat here to see an opthamologist last summer. I had taken him to 2 separate vets…read morefor issues with his eye due to allergies and scratching. (We tried a new vet local to us since moving, but decided to go back to the one we trusted, an hour away). Both vets prescribed prednisone drops among trying other things. Our regular vet suggested it was time for a specialist. I'd called several places and no one had an available appointment for months. Some had an office visit charge of $400+ and insisted on doing bloodwork although he already had recent bloodwork done. Finally I called Newtown and got him an appt for the same week, and it was under $300 for the exam. The opthamologist we saw that day is no longer there, but our experience was a positive one. I found out his eye issue was a herpes infection that was not resolving due to the prednisone. Something completely missed by the regular vets. She also recommended entropion surgery for his eyelid that was turned in (later discovering his eyelash had fused to his eye). Fast forward to last week... I brought him back to the vet because of changes in the appearance of his eye. He had a "corneal sequestrum" which is dead scar tissue from trauma. We were monitoring it to make sure it didnt become an issue. Back to the opthomologist in Newtown - this time we saw Dr Crabtree. The cost of the visit was only $202, billed as a followup from last year. I feared surgery, but she told me his eye was attempting to heal itself by pushing out the dead tissue, which was a good thing. Surgery would be $4000, but she is confident he wont need it. She prescribed antibiotics drops but didnt make me buy them there, since I had some at home already. The plan is to recheck him in a few weeks, and remove any loose tissue at that time. Such a relief to hear good news. My worry woth specialists is that they want to do expensive procedures and testing, but this was not the case here. Contrary to another review I read, my cat was treated with care by all staff we encountered.

Being a nurse practioner (in people tho) but being aware of bloat which is a risk in sheperds rushed him here in the middle of the night. I was treated very professionally and treatment happened with the blink of an eye to save his life. The vet was amazing who was in the military and knew working dog lines like German sheperds very well. She acted quickly with all the protocol a bloat dog is expected to have. He required surgery for a gastropexy and by the time we left he was being prepped for surgery to save his life. The vet called me after surgery and informed me a mass was found in his spleen (another common issue with these dogs and can be life threatening if not found) and removed the spleen. He was kept for about a day and half and did great. The vet assistants were amazing, so compassionate and loved Wiley like he was part of their family. I am so grateful for their expertise care and also for their compassion towards our family. I was an extreme mess during this time and I thank each and every one of them for the wonderful care they gave to my boy. Thank you on so many levels again for saving my boy. I am forever grateful to the staff and practice in general.

Special shout out for working us in within a day when our kitty seemed to be rapidly declining with an unknown ailment while four other local vets told us either they they weren't taking new patients or that their next available appointment was weeks away. There is a vet shortage out there, we get it. But when your pet is sick and getting worse, nothing else matters. Vet care is also expensive, and the team here was very concerned, in a sensitive way, to make sure we knew what we were getting into financially with each possible course of action to diagnose and treat. Like a lot of pet lovers, we didn't care what it cost if it would save the life of our cat. But the straightforward discussion of costs was impressive and done with compassion. Dr. Scanlon personally called us several times to report incoming test results and follow up. The office is remarkably responsive to calls and texts. And every single tech/office person we dealt with was kind and competent. Two months later and our pet is back to normal, thanks to quick and accurate diagnosis and treatment here, although she'll need to be on daily medication the rest of her life. But we have definitely found our vet in the Berkshires and have nothing but positive things to say about our experience at VCA in Great Barrington. Highly recommended.

When we landed in upstate, we were on the hunt for a great practice to bring our furry family. It was by accident we found Bilmar when putting down our old cat last year as the amazing woman who came to our home and helped us say good bye to Tobe is married to one of the veterinarians at Bilmar. So, we took a chance (after being frustrated with care for years) and made an appointment the next time our cat needed help with a recurring URI. We have not been disappointed... far from it. Bilmar is the very best. Kind, caring, animal lovers, they care about the animals and the owners, INCREDIBLY well informed and thorough. Everyone from the front desk through techs and vets are amazing. We adopted a special needs dog last year rescued from a brutal breeding situation and Lucille just loves it there. She is always excited to arrive and when we do, she goes in the back with the staff with joy. Not a small feat for our velcro pup. To me, that says it all.

The tech took him into the room and when he was returned to me I was informed that they performed a de-worming as well. My puppy was not scheduled for this. I had given her a stool sample for testing. When I asked why it was performed I got an argument from the tech. The vet had confirmed my distress, the dog was not scheduled for a de-worming. The dog had a reaction with multiple episodes of vomiting. I do not trust this office and will not return. Make sure you go with your pet when they are being treated.
