This letter is written not only in mourning, but in the belief that what occurred was unacceptable and must be addressed. From the moment we arrived, the experience was cold, transactional, and lacking the urgency or compassion one would expect in an emergency setting. At one of the most traumatic moments of my life, I was met not with reassurance or decisive action, but with delays and indifference. My dog Max was in critical condition and required immediate intervention. Despite this, there was a significant delay before a doctor was able--or willing--to operate. That delay had catastrophic consequences. During the time we waited, my dog's tumor ruptured. He hemorrhaged. He suffered a stroke. What may have been survivable with timely action became fatal. It was all about the money- transactional. I firmly believe that your team's failure to act with appropriate urgency robbed my dog of his chance to live. What happened is unforgivable. I hope that acknowledging it can prevent another family from enduring the same kind of loss.

Just me when I enter their office. That was wrong on their part. I bring my dog Lulu to the West Springfield office, because she was not eating and difficulties walking. I first took my cat here to see an opthamologist last summer. I had taken him to 2 separate vets…read morefor issues with his eye due to allergies and scratching. (We tried a new vet local to us since moving, but decided to go back to the one we trusted, an hour away). Both vets prescribed prednisone drops among trying other things. Our regular vet suggested it was time for a specialist. I'd called several places and no one had an available appointment for months. Some had an office visit charge of $400+ and insisted on doing bloodwork although he already had recent bloodwork done. Finally I called Newtown and got him an appt for the same week, and it was under $300 for the exam. The opthamologist we saw that day is no longer there, but our experience was a positive one. I found out his eye issue was a herpes infection that was not resolving due to the prednisone. Something completely missed by the regular vets. She also recommended entropion surgery for his eyelid that was turned in (later discovering his eyelash had fused to his eye). Fast forward to last week... I brought him back to the vet because of changes in the appearance of his eye. He had a "corneal sequestrum" which is dead scar tissue from trauma. We were monitoring it to make sure it didnt become an issue. Back to the opthomologist in Newtown - this time we saw Dr Crabtree. The cost of the visit was only $202, billed as a followup from last year. I feared surgery, but she told me his eye was attempting to heal itself by pushing out the dead tissue, which was a good thing. Surgery would be $4000, but she is confident he wont need it. She prescribed antibiotics drops but didnt make me buy them there, since I had some at home already. The plan is to recheck him in a few weeks, and remove any loose tissue at that time. Such a relief to hear good news. My worry woth specialists is that they want to do expensive procedures and testing, but this was not the case here. Contrary to another review I read, my cat was treated with care by all staff we encountered.

So I called the next day and was on hold to 7 minutes before being to that you were in a meeting and could not speak with me. They could not have known that in less than 7 minutes? This is exactly the sort of service that is so poor and beneath the level of medical care. Let's see if I get a call back as promised?

I just took Kira to have an exam and the bill was $505.35. The exam was maximum 10 minutes, it cost $113. She also had blood work done which she didn't need because of the throat diagnosis she was given that has nothing to do with blood values so the vet shouldn't have suggested it. I said yes to the bloodwork, I would have said no if I had known the cost- $392.22. I feel taken advantage of. So- I've learned the lesson that I need to ask for itemized costs first before I agree to any treatment here. ***** 5/21/24 The care Kira has received at VCA has been exemplary. The neurologist was great, very attentive, and asked that I update her via email whenever my pup had a seizure. Then, in May 2025, she took a planned 6-month leave. I found out through an automated email when I wrote to report seizure activity as instructed. There was no backup in place, prescriptions could not be refilled, and I was told to find another neurologist without a referral. I found this to be completely irresponsible and a disservice to their patients. The neurologist is now back from leave, and I have called and not received a response or follow-up. They have likely lost more patients than just us. When I called the emergency line last night for guidance on a particularly bad seizure, I was bluntly told they were at capacity (so don't come in) and to call another ER (the ER they told me to call also could not help me). I have had other good ER experiences at VCA in the past, and do not know what has changed to make good service and care nonexistent. So don't waste your precious time and your pet's care on this practice. Try Piper Memorial in Middletown or Guardian in Brewster, NY.

Special shout out for working us in within a day when our kitty seemed to be rapidly declining with an unknown ailment while four other local vets told us either they they weren't taking new patients or that their next available appointment was weeks away. There is a vet shortage out there, we get it. But when your pet is sick and getting worse, nothing else matters. Vet care is also expensive, and the team here was very concerned, in a sensitive way, to make sure we knew what we were getting into financially with each possible course of action to diagnose and treat. Like a lot of pet lovers, we didn't care what it cost if it would save the life of our cat. But the straightforward discussion of costs was impressive and done with compassion. Dr. Scanlon personally called us several times to report incoming test results and follow up. The office is remarkably responsive to calls and texts. Two months later and our pet is back to normal, thanks to quick and accurate diagnosis and treatment here, although she'll need to be on daily medication the rest of her life.
