I want to share our experience with this clinic. We have taken our cat to see the cardiologist, which has always been excellent. Unfortunately, our experience with the emergency service was disappointing and frankly terrible. We brought our cat in for bleeding from her nose, as well as an infection in her mouth, eye, and nose. The doctor told us that our cat had sinus cancer and said there was nothing they could do. A technician then approached us to discuss euthanasia, but she was rude, lacked empathy, and could not answer our questions. We decided to take our cat back to her regular veterinarian. After receiving an antibiotic injection, our cat is now doing much better. We paid $400 for an unsatisfactory experience with an unhelpful vet and a discourteous technician. I am very disappointed and would not recommend taking pets to this clinic's emergency service. They were ready to kill my cat when she had a problem that was solved with the right medication. read more

The patient advocate was lovely. The rest of the visit was absolutely awful. My dog ingested a pesticide and was having severe tremors and vomiting. She was unable to walk so I carried her into the exam room where a tech took her pulse, told me it was an urgent case, then left me and the dog alone in the room for over an hour with no update. I finally called the front desk from my cell to let them know we'd been forgotten, then someone came in and said the doctor would be in soon. We waited another half an hour for the vet to come in. When she did, she was unprofessional and downright rude. Any questions I asked were met with irritation, defensiveness, and outright lies (like when she claimed she didn't need to examine the dog because a nurse had conveyed the results of her intake exam in the back, even though no exam had been conducted). I understand they were busy, and I appreciate that being a vet is stressful. But this experience was unacceptable. I will not bring my pets back to Upstate Veterinary Specialties, and would not recommend them to anyone experiencing a medical emergency with their pet. read more

Do not bring your pet here. We arrived at Upstate Veterinary Specialties in Latham at 2pm after our dog was attacked by another dog. Her tongue was bitten and split about an inch open. There was blood everywhere and it was actively dripping as we checked in. To their credit, they brought us into a room quickly and immediately told us she would need sutures. That is where any level of competence or care ended. We waited a total of eight hours. During that entire time there was zero communication. No updates. No explanation. We repeatedly had to walk back up to the desk and ask what was happening. We never once saw a doctor. After eight hours, a vet tech named Carissa V finally came into the room. She attempted to guide us toward leaving and downplayed the situation. Only after we pushed back and specifically requested that our dog be brought to a doctor for another opinion did she agree to take our dog back. She returned only about four minutes later with our dog cleaned up. Based on that timing and what followed, it is extremely difficult to believe our dog was ever actually seen by a doctor. It appeared that Carissa V made her own assumptions and decisions without a proper veterinary evaluation. She then told us the case had only been triaged and that we were good to go. Our dog had an open bite wound in her tongue from another dog and they sent her home with no antibiotics. I asked Carissa directly if antibiotics were needed. She said no. I followed up again asking about the risk of infection and she confidently stated there was a 100 percent chance our dog would not get an infection. That statement is alarming and medically irresponsible. Because Upstate made us wait so long, we lost the window to have our dog's tongue properly sutured. What could have been repaired is now irreversible. As a direct result of this delay, our dog will be losing a piece of her tongue. This outcome was completely avoidable. We were shoved out with no transparency about timelines or what was happening. Only after pressing further were we told that a doctor had called out sick. That is not the client's problem and it does not excuse eight hours of silence, no doctor interaction, and negligent care. Carissa V was one of the few staff members we dealt with and based on this experience she is a liability. Her communication was dismissive, misleading, and unsafe. Within 24 hours we brought our dog to another care center where she immediately received proper treatment including the care that Upstate failed to provide. Upstate Veterinary Specialties and its staff were useless in an emergency situation. They are terrible communicators and showed a shocking lack of urgency and professionalism. I would never bring my dog here again under any circumstance. If you can avoid Upstate and go anywhere else in the Capital Region, do it. read more

For example, my son in law has a boxer, known for their short lives. He's old and starting to fail. Losing control of his back legs The first thing they wanted to do was a $5,000 MRI. They have a water therapy tank where he will walk with his legs submerged. $500. per session? For a dying dog My dog has Cushings disease. His cardiologist misdiagnosed for $900. 9 months later, for $600. he thought it might be Cushings. Referred us to G.I. They wanted to do a test to see if it was renal or pituitary. But the treatment for both is the same!!! Took our dog in with a torn ear. They put him in triage and we waited for 4 hours, the last 2 in a small cubicle, until we tried to leave and go to the clinic on the Troy road. They told us that we couldn't leave. Turned out that that big clinic had only 1 vet on duty. What more can I say. They take advantage of how much we love our pets. read more

Thank you for reaching out; however, communication was not the issue. Dousing my cat in alcohol to perform a sonogram and what was done to her legs had nothing to do with communication. She was having difficulty walking when she came in due to her issues-he did not deserve this. Original Post: As my beloved baby cat who was a patient was having a set back, I drove almost 2 hours at 3am to the emergency room. They did a sonogram, which apparently is standard procedure for her issue and included in the fee: however, they doused her in alcohol and gave her to me soaking wet with the unbearable strong smell that even I could not stand, let alone her who was already sick. I complained and asked why they could not even clean her up and why did they use so much. I was informed it would evaporate. I asked for a cloth and cleaned her up myself. I said something to the Dr. when she came in and she acted like it was standard procedure and oh well-no concern at all. This is unacceptable. Then, to add to that, when attempting to take blood, they could not do it in one leg, so had to try the other and then her tail. Both legs were severely bruised to the point that I called and complained when I got home. I don't care if she might have been uncooperative, of course she was. She was sick, anxious, scared and with strangers. Obviously whoever did this was new or did not know what they were doing. Thankfully, I am appreciate of Dr. Bishop and his staff, but as for the emergency room doctor and staff, never again will I take any of my pets there. Sadly, she ended up passing away and I have to live with her last visit there being heartbreaking and the pain and discomfort she endured as a result of this treatment. read more

If you have an emergency with your pet on a holiday weekend at night, I suggest skipping this place and go directly to Capital District Referral down the street. Our dog, very blatantly by looking, needed stitches for his eyelid Sunday night around 7:30pm on 4th of July weekend. I had my husband go inside with a picture to show the receptionist before taking my dog out of the car and getting him riled up not knowing if we could be admitted or not. The receptionist was very quick to say they don't have an optometrist on call and to go to Capital District. They did not even want us to bring my dog in to be looked at real quick before turning us away. The only good thing was that they suggested Capital District because I will now go there from now and not give Upstate my business. I was told by the other hospital that Upstate knows Capital also does not have an emergency optometrist on call and are contracted out for appointments. Capital took one look at the picture AND my dog and immediately took him in for sedation and to be sutured. They said that Upstate had zero reason to turn us away and that they probably didn't want to deal with stitches that night. read more

Our boy was in need of urgent care and we're so happy we brought him to UVS. We were thoroughly impressed with the care our dog received, the kindness and expertise of the entire clinical team, as well as the facility itself. Our vet had been treating our dog for back pain but it didn't come across as anything serious. Therefore, going into the weekend, as his symptoms worsened a bit, we chose to wait until Monday to call to schedule another appointment. Instead, we were told to immediately take him to UVS - quite of shock for us. Our vet informed UVS of our pending arrival. While we were initially informed it would be a 4-6 hour wait, we were brought in within 30 minutes. The technicians were great with our boy handling him carefully and skillfully. Dr. Bishop was awesome as he took his time to explain what he was going to do, what he was doing as he did it, and then explained his observations in each step of our boy's exam. We opted to have an MRI and left our boy in their care. Dr. Bishop stated he would call us at a specific time and he did just as he said he would. Again, he thoroughly explained his observations as well as our options. We liked the fact that when we asked what he would do, he told us; so many vets in our past would not offer their opinions so this was new to us and quite welcomed as we felt we could make the most informed decision possible about our treatment plan. The lobby and exam rooms were clean and well-kept. The atmosphere helped our boy, nervous at first, quickly calm down, relax, and even nod off to sleep for a bit. I don't know what animals they care for but if your furry friend is in need of specialized or emergency care, this is definitely the place to go. About the lobby picture: what you cannot see are the staff members at each desk - they are present and helpful. There were also people in the waiting room off to the left. We write this review with a heavy heart and it has taken us a long time to be able to share these concerns about our experiences at UVS. We had two dogs under care at UVS, Buddy and Myles. Buddy, was admitted to the hospital after ER. Though not fully diagnosed, doctors thought Buddy might also have pancreatitis. Days later while at the ER with our other dog, Myles, we visited with Buddy. He was shaking and unstable and we were concerned that he might be dying. We asked the ER doctor to help but he insisted we wait for the day shift doctors to do their rounds and get back to us tomorrow. We were convinced Buddy was in serious distress and pleaded that he receive immediate attention. We were refused. By 2pm the next day, we received a frantic message from a UVS hospital doctor emphatically stating that Buddy was in decline and in need of aggressive treatment. We then received a call that Buddy was dying. By the time we reached UVS Buddy was unresponsive and had to be euthanized. Had someone listened to us and attended to Buddy that night perhaps Buddy could have been treated, or we could have held him in our arms as he passed. Our pup Myles was also under care at UVS. He'd had surgery to remove his pericardium to relieve pressure in his chest due to a buildup of fluid from an unknown disorder. Interestingly throughout his entire illness, Myles never showed any distress. Other than rapid breathing, he remained a joyful, active pup. He ate, played, and otherwise appeared healthy. During the surgery, a drain was placed in Myles' chest and post surgery instructions required us to get Myles to the ER for periodic drainage and to keep his doctors informed of any concerns. When his breathing became faster, we continued to visit UVS. At one ER visit, however, the ER doctor thought Myles' drainage port was clogged and said he could not proceed. He recommended we leave Myles overnight in ER for our regular doctor to attend to the next day. Having lost Buddy while he was admitted to their hospital we did not feel comfortable leaving Myles there. So, we took him home and called the next day to update Myles' doctors. We received robotic and rude responses from the front desk staff who said Myles' doctor was on vacation, refused to convey our messages to the surgeon, left us on hold, and did not answer when we called back. When we were able to speak with our UVS internist, she arranged a draining and had the shunt removed. When pressed for a clearer picture of what was happening with Myles she told us that neither the results from the surgery nor the tests of subsequent fluid drainage showed any indication of cancer, and the illness remained a mystery. She told us to continue to visit the ER to manage the fluids as needed and to keep in touch with her! We began to grow weary and frustrated with the ER visits as staff did not always understand why we were there. One ER doctor looked at us accusingly and bluntly asked if we didn't realize the dog had cancer and that the disease had progressed beyond care, insisting that is what she had read in his chart?! We promptly made another appointment with the internist and asked her about this. Had she had diagnosed cancer? She said no. She recommended steroid treatment. It did not help. We met again, quite confused and upset. She discouraged us from taking our dog to another doctor/hospital, getting a second opinion, or seeking alternative care. She insisted that the next necessary and essential step was another invasive surgery in which they could "get in there and sort out what was going on." She said she could arrange to have the surgery be performed that day. She never presented us with other options, including the possibility of palliative care. Myles was pulled from me, and the surgeon entered, clearly annoyed at us, saying that we were being overly emotional, not letting go. He refused to discuss the surgery or prognosis with us and did not seem to realize we had not wanted this surgery in the first place. Myles did not do well. Visiting him afterwards we were met by another doctor, equally contemptuous as the surgeon. She called us a day later to say that Myles had suffered "a neurological event". He was not given blood thinners and a blood clot caused a stroke that killed him. When the doctors called us, it was more of the same exasperation from the surgeon and the internist told us it had turned out to be cancer and that the cancer could not have been treated anyway. Then, why had she insisted upon the surgery? UVS staff loved Myles. They comforted us and cried with us. We continue to adopt older and ailing dogs...we never returned to UVS. read more

First: yes, they are expensive. But health care ANYWHERE in the US is expensive, for both people and animals, and that is not the fault of the doctors. That's the entire medical profession - paying student loans, expensive equipment, expensive drugs, a large and competent staff, lawyers and insurance as required by law. So yes, what they charge is ghastly, but it is NOT to line their pockets. So let's get that out of the way first. We have taken two of our pets there, both Maine Coons. Our first one, 15 year old Baron Manfred, was seriously declining, losing weight, and we were deeply afraid we were losing him. The crack cardiology team assured us that his heart was not the problem, instead helping us uncover some long term gastrointestinal disturbances that were solved with a change of diet and some appropriate antibiotics. We sent Manfred across the Bridge six months later due to debilitating arthritis and pain that could not be managed, but the UVS folks gave us back our happy, loving boy and six precious months we never expected to have. Our second Maine Coon, Prawn, had a skin cancer that was successfully removed by our local vet, but testing showed that it was very aggressive, and that the margins on the surgery, while clear, might not be large enough to guarantee we got everything. So we brought him to UVS for x rays and an ultrasound. Our oncologist was kind, patient, clearly was a cat person herself, and gave us every detail on possibilities that we could have asked for. She was reasonable regarding options. Again, were the tests expensive? Yes, yes they were. (This second bout of Serious Stuff convinced us to get pet insurance on our newest Maine Coon, less than a year old...just in case.) But what they revealed was that a small shadow in his lower lung was most likely NOT cancer, but instead bronchial/respiratory nonsense that many cats get. And because the ultrasound was pristine, they felt one surgery was just fine. We need to get him x-rayed every 2-3 months to make sure the lung shadow remains just that, but it can be done at our local vet and just sent to them. (Notice that they understand that we need to save money where we can and did not insist that the x-rays be done there.) UVS is worth every penny we paid them. Every single person, from check-in staff to assistants to techs to doctors, was nothing but compassionate to us and to our animals. They have our highest recommendation. read more

We went in at 2:00 pm on Christmas. There were hardly any cars in the parking lot. When we walked in there were 2 people with their animals. We said our dog swallowed a toy and vomited some of it up we said we're not sure if she had anything else, but she didn't want to eat and wasn't acting herself. We wanted her to have an x-ray at least to see if there was any blockage or other things in her stomach, we were finally told at 8 PM that we are being switched from the emergency care to the urgent care and that would take at least another hour before a doctor would see us. We were told three hours before that that we already had a doctor assigned to us and that they were taking dogs that were more urgent. There were a few that came in a chocolate, which is very understandable and I'm not even upset with the owners of the dogs. Don't get me wrong. It's the staff on the way they run things there. I don't understand why they didn't at least take my dog back to take an x-ray or do some blood work to get the process going. They kept saying it depends on the severity. There were animals that came in after us with less severity and went in before us. And they kept blaming severity. But there is no privacy so you can hear exactly what is wrong. We ended up leaving because my dog seemed better enough to go to another to another emergency vet, but I will not go back there again. Besides they obviously didn't think that much was wrong considering they let us wait 6 hours and maybe another hour or so to see the doctor. I thought they were good but seeing all the 1 star reviews and complaints i understand why they only have 3 stars. read more

Four years ago when I took two dogs in for porcupine pills, they were reasonable efficient and took excellent care of us. We were back within a week. The total cost for both visits came in around $2500. A month the same two encountered a porcupine yet again, I called and was told it was $280 to come in for the emergency visit while holding two dogs clearly in pain I filled out the paperwork. I waiting room in a pool of drool for three hours although there was nobody there. The vet finally came in to inform me that yes indeed they did have porcupine pills in their mouth and on their face and one leg which of course I've already knew. I then proceeded to wait another 45 minutes before somebody comes in give me an estimate of cost. The estimate cost was almost $3000 per dog. ! I got up and left. Then I received a phone call telling me they could negotiate price which I found completely absurd. They wanted to do all this extra care for my dog, saying that they were older, my dogs only just turned seven. They are in prime condition. They are vetted regularly. They eat healthy and certainly didn't need any extra additional treatment. I went to my own vet on a Saturday and paid an emergency both my treated for the removal of porcupine one of them having to go through surgery to get them out of her gums the total cost of my visit to my vet was $970. Upstate is still coming after me for the emergency visit although the girl told me it was only 280 to come in now they're telling me it's per . Not only that within 30 days they have turned it over to collections and if I settle, they wanna attack on 35%! I strongly advise people not go to this place. My dog died in their "care" and they had no explanation. As a PhD and an anatomy and physiology professor of 25 years, I expect answers. Not only did my baby die one month ago, still, after repeated calls to the business office no one has returned my calls. I spent $5000 and my dog died and no one will give me any straight answers. They charged me nearly $300 just to take her blood pressure over a less than 24 hour period. Thats highway robbery. If you really want to take that chance, I guess that's up to you, but I would never go there again. They clearly have no respect for the clients, as the business office refuses to a courtesy call back after 3 messages were left. I've spent enough money, I find that completely unacceptable. When I went to see her dead body, and I told the vet that I would be there in a half an hour with my other dog to say goodbye to her the vet said she would meet me there, but she did not. Even after the grief counselor called for her to meet me she did not. She clearly did not want to answer my questions because she doesn't have any answers. I do not trust that the right things were done, otherwise they could've faced me, but they refuse to. The techs were great, but everyone else I did not enjoy... even the woman that was trying to read me all of the charges but I would be open to when I was leaving my dog in their care in the emergency room overnight really showed no care for me being completely distraught about me leaving my dog in that state. Lots of people working there need to learn bedside manner. And the business office needs to learn how to return phone calls. read more

Yes it is expensive but in this day and age if you adopt an animal companion you should be responsible and get them a good insurance policy immediately. My son was out of town for work so they kept the dog there for us until he returned for a proper burial. They did not charge any extra for that service. I will preface my review by saying that the ONLY benefit of the doubt that can be given is that it was holiday weekend. I waited for 12 hours to have my Corgi seen on my last visit to the emergency room. 12 hours. 12 fn hours. And when I finally did see the doctor, the doctor was fine. I got meds for my dog which probably could have been taken care of a lot sooner than 12 hours. A 12 hour wait speaks to me of poor process rather than being overwhelmed by an overcrowded waiting room. It also smacks a bit of negligence. One tech jokingly remarked that I had now worked a shift at UVS - except I didn't get paid and my pet got worse while I waited. And I left $500 buck poorer than I came in. Haha! That's. A good one. They won't keep a list and call you to come back when you're in a certain time frame of your pet being seen. So essentially you and your pet are a hostage in the waiting room until they deem your case ready to be seen. Techs round on the first 1/2 hour with your pet, take vitals and then it's another 6 or 8 hours more before another set. As I sat in the waiting room, another beloved pet, literally passed out before his case could be seen. On another visit, with my cat, (a long time ago) a similar wait time ensued. And by the time the vet saw my cat, she was beyond saving. Again the ONLY benefit of the doubt, is that it was a holiday weekend with all other vets being closed. So there was a funnel of convergence. But since the experience was similar from the last time I went... maybe there's no impetus to be better since our choices in the Capital Region are slim when it come to emergency veterinary care. read more

This is a wonderful place. The staff are very compassionate and professional. My dog had eye surgery a few years ago with Dr Corbett. Recently, I had to use their emergency clinic because of an allergic reaction. My dog was seen by Dr. Little, she was very nice and knowledgeable. I will not hesitate to go there again if I need to. It is well worth the extra 30 minutes it takes for me to go there instead of the Kingston clinic that is closer. read more

Recently, my dog was sent to this vet office for an ultrasound. Unfortunately he did not survive what was going on and passed away. But, while there, he and I received the best of care. They were wonderful to me in my time of distress. They were very gentle with my dog who was definately in a lot of pain. Specifically, Dr. Rachel Hannum was very kind. I wish I lived closer to Albany and I would use their services regularly. I don't usually write reviews, but the care was so good I felt it was necessary. read more

I called around to a bunch of different veterinary clinics as it's a Saturday. No one could help me. I called here and they were like 'absolutely, come on up sooner rather than later'. I tell them it's over an hour drive. I get here and 3 hours later the vet calls me and says there's no one here to really help me. With COVID I've had to stay in my car all this time. My cat swallowed yarn. No one can do ultrasound today. The surgeon has their own emergency at home, (which I am sorry about) so they could only take X-rays and it'll be over $600 and it won't tell much. So here I sit, still, waiting for my cat to be brought out and pay over $200 for them to have me still look for someone else. Over 6 hours in total with nothing to show but a still sick cat. read more

I recently needed emergency services for my best friend. He had what I learned was a "Hot spot" on his cheek which was now fully infected. My vet could not see my buddy until late in the day. Not wanting this to let this go, on to the ER we went with my furry friend. The staff were caring and fast. We left after a few hours of emergent care with cone of shame and meds to resolve our pups problem. While waiting for the dog to return to us, you can enjoy a cold or hot beverage and snacks from the vending machine. You can also watch other pups going through PT in the hydro-pool. First of all we LOVE Dr. Waxman he is great and compassionate..but had to bring our dog to urgent care last night. The tech was great BUT no Vet could see him for the both the vet's were in emergency surgery. I get it it was an emergency but my dog is important too and couldn't breathe and no vet came in to check on him. We left and I am seeing my regular vet tomorrow first thing. I hope he makes it till then. They are quick to get the papers to you to sign saying that you understand it could be $900. plus for treatment. No problem there getting in to see you. Yes they need more vets there maybe their salaries should be increased. read more

09/02/22- I would like to share my horrible experience with this " emergency hospital ". I rushed my dog Kaizer into the emergency center at Upstate two months ago regarding him fracturing ( hair line fracture) his front right arm while playing with another dog. Kaizer has a disease which makes him prone to fractures. Kaizer has only ever had hair line fractures and I would like to make that clear before I continue, before this fracture Kaizer was doing so amazing and didn't fracture any bones with in the past year. To tell my story I would like to start off with having to wait in the waiting room for over 30 minutes while he was crying out in excruciating pain, nobody had any type of sympathy for him, or cared that he was in so much pain. Kaizer was hospitalized for 1 week with Upstate. The morning before I was supposed get Kaizer back because he was improving (pain wise) and being told I can treat him at home with this small fracture, I got a phone call that morning that Kaizer had fractured ANOTHER bone (back right) while in Upstate's care. I received the XRAYs and was told by my primary that it looked like Kaizer got hit by a car and has never had a break THIS BAD. Kaizer was in Upstate's care when he got this BAD fracture and nobody could tell me any information such as when this happened how it happened or why nobody discovered it til the next morning. After spending more money on X-rays to tell if this was break was fixable or if it could be treated at home with bed rest and medicine, I was told it was not and that Kaizer was going to have to be put down ( euthanized ) due not being able to get this fixed or being able to take care of it at home, I was told this MANY times, that THE ONLY option for him was to put him down. Then my primary mentioned amputation if there were no further options at this time ( NOT Upstate) . Once I mentioned this to Upstate I was told MULTIPLE times by the vet - Doctor Scott that I was being selfish and putting Kaizer through a lot. After the doctor talked to the way that she did (very unprofessional)- Upstate you CAN pull the call record and hear it yourselves. I decided to take my dog out of that HORRIBLE place and bring him to Cornell- Ithaca ( HIGHLY RECOMMEND). Kaizer was hospitalized again for another few days at Cornell when they called me every day with updates and there concerns or questions about him. Cornell made it clear to me there was many options that Kaizer has wether it was plating, screws, or amputation being the last option. Plating and screws did come with risk but the point is they were WILLING to do anything to help Kaizer and euthanasia was NOT an option at all for him. After a weekend of back and forth research that Cornell took there time out to do we decide the best option for Kaizer which was amputation. Today 9/9/22 I brought Kaizer to his LAST check up with Cornell to get X-rays to make sure everything is healing and to see how well is actually is doing. The vets at Cornell took him outside to see his strength and how amazing he is doing today....today was a 15 minute appointment due to then deciding Kaizer is doing spectacular and there was no need for X-rays because of how great he is doing. Point being- DO NOT TRUST THESE VETS. Something happened to my dog in there care that I will never know about and the ONLY thing they cared about was doing it the easy way which was putting my TWO YEAR OLD FRENCH BULLDOG DOWN. I would never recommend this place. Also any post I have made have been taken down by Upstate Veterinary Specialties, shows that they have nothing to say or do !!!!! Very IRRESPONSIBLE. ALSO ATTATCHED ARE RANDOM PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD COMMENTS ON MY POST THERE HORRIBLE EXPEREIENCES. That is why I say " these vets". PROOF ALL BELOW!!!!! read more

Every office they have is always rude, when faced with an emergency I was told they are at capacity and to look online.

Sent by our general vet for care. We waited in a dirty room for nearly two hours. A vet (no introduction) walked in and refused to administer the necessary care, stating "ethics" as the reason why resources would not be wasted on our dying pet. Thankfully we found our way to another vet that day who saved our boy. He has recovered and is doing amazing. read more
