I've worked with rescue years ago, I've had Great Danes for 20 years. I met a wonderful family…read morethat needed to place a Great Dane they were fostering. I had excellent references, but I also have a very old cat. I wanted a nice quiet dog so the cat wouldn't be scared. Jack seemed like a great match. Jack needed a quiet home and someone to love him. I had put in an application to adopt, but I needed time to make sure it was going to work, especially for my cat. The family fostering brought Jack to Petco where San Luis Valley Animal Welfare was having an adoption fair. I arrived about 30 minutes before them. I talked to Aileen. In my application and that day I was upfront with her about my ability to walk Jack. But, that I had the means and a trainer willing to walk him. My not being able to walk Jack was a big issue with her. But, she let me take Jack home and I agreed to let her check in with me on his walking. And she did. She checked in every week. "How is Jacks walking going?" Not how is Jack settling in, how is Jack and the cat getting along, she just wanted to know if he was walking everyday, twice a day for 30 minutes. I responded with how he was doing, how the cat was handling things, how much he slobbered. :o) I also said he was going on his walks, but that he wasn't gone for 30 minutes. He has trust issues, like most rescues do, especially Great Danes. He didn't want to be away from me that long. He would fight leaving me and then walk a certain distance, he would stop, turn around and pull the trainer back to me. We were trying to build trust. Let him know I would be there everytime he came back. After a few weeks of her asking me about his walks (and nothing else) I had fallen head over heels for him. My cat was getting used to him. We had a routine going. Everything was great, I was ready to adopt. Then she sent another email saying I had broken the agreement and she would be taking him. It broke my heart. He had been walking just not a full 30 minutes because he was insecure. I admit, I got a bit upset. I told her if she was taking him, she better do it that day. I spent the day in tears. Then she gave me a little hope. She thought my emails about the walks were vague. So, I explained again. She emailed back, asking to talk to my dog walker/trainer. By then I had had enough. My application had all my references on it, she let me take the dog home, she let me fall in love with the dog. I don't think she ever planned to let me keep him. If she had, she would have been more concerned about his complete welfare and not just 30 minutes twice a day. I admit my emotions were raw by this point and I told her to either pick him up or give me adoption papers, but I couldn't take the emotional rollercoaster she had me on. She picked him up the next morning, leaving me in tears. I can't imagine what Jack was thinking as they took him away from me. He must be so sad and confused. I know I am.

This Group of people are heros! My husband and I adopted a little black Chihuahua back in November…read moreof 2011. Tumbleweed is the light of our life. We were not offended by the questions that Aileen asked. This group cares for theses animals sometimes for years and finding a safe, happy home is their primary goal. We had not had a puppy for 15 years and found the questions helpful. It made us realize how out of touch with puppy proofing we were. We were not Fans of the PetSmart Training classes. We went to 3 classes but felt that there was definitely a philosophy difference. I think it was more that we thought our pup was the cutest, smartest thing on Earth and we felt She DID understand English. LOL PLEASE keep up the awesome and caring work that you do!
