Over the past year, I have spent more than $11,000 with them and always felt that my business was appreciated. Unfortunately, my most recent transaction changed that impression completely. After placing a large order, more than two weeks passed without any shipping update. It took three separate requests before I finally received a tracking number. Tyler assured me my package would arrive the following Tuesday, but when I checked the tracking information myself, it showed that only a shipping label had been created. The carrier had not yet received the package. Because of the delay and conflicting information, I requested to cancel my order. Tyler told me that wasn't possible because the order had already shipped, even though the tracking information clearly showed otherwise. After asking to speak with the owner, I spoke with him briefly. Our conversation focused solely on how I wanted my refund issued. There was no discussion of the conflicting shipping information or the concerns that led me to cancel the order. Since I had paid by credit card, I requested that it be credited back to my card, but I was told a cash refund would be easier. When I picked up my refund, I was handed a large amount of cash with no receipt or documentation. After counting it at home, I discovered I had been shorted by more than $200. I immediately contacted the owner and returned to collect the remaining balance. Again, I was handed cash with no paperwork. Since the beginning of this issue, I have requested three separate times to speak with the owner to provide feedback about my experience. Each time I was told he was unavailable, in a meeting, or out of the office. Despite those requests, I have never received a return call. The true measure of a business isn't how it treats customers when everything goes right--it's how it responds when something goes wrong. I chose to support JRC Gold Exchange from the week they opened because I believe in supporting local businesses. Unfortunately, this experience left me feeling that a year of loyalty and more than $11,000 in business were not met with the level of accountability, communication, or customer care I expected. I will do business with Portland Gold Exchange in Sellwood going forward.

The challenge for most individuals buying or selling precious metals is that they don't do it very often and they must negotiate with dealers who do it every day. I had 22 gold coins I needed to sell and ended up talking to Oscar at Portland Gold Buyers.com as my first stop. He convinced me that he was giving me a fair price on my coins and I , unfortunately, trusted him. I then went across the street to Affordable Jewelry and Precious Metals (394 SW Washington Avenue) and found out they would have paid me $3,100 more for my 22 gold coins. I then talked to Oscar and asked him to match his closest competitors price and he refused, so, my decision to trust Oscar cost me $3,100. I am not telling you to not use Oscar if you should choose to do so but what I am telling you is check for pricing somewhere else first (like AJPM across the street who actually shows their pricing on a live screen in their office). Based on my experience, if you don't have a good understanding of market price when you start negotiating with Oscar, you are going to lose money as he is focused on maximizing his return on your metals even if the pricing he offers is not reflective of the true value of your metals. Anyway, while Randy couldn't accommodate my entire sale, he went above and beyond to call another coin dealer nearby, explain what I was selling, and ask if he could accommodate me. He could. So, Randy and Sally gave me excellent directions to the next coin dealer and assured me he would be fair (he was!).
