I had 22 gold coins I needed to sell and ended up talking to Oscar at Portland Gold Buyers.com as my first stop. He convinced me that he was giving me a fair price on my coins and I , unfortunately, trusted him. I then went across the street to Affordable Jewelry and Precious Metals (394 SW Washington Avenue) and found out they would have paid me $3,100 more for my 22 gold coins. I then talked to Oscar and asked him to match his closest competitors price and he refused, so, my decision to trust Oscar cost me $3,100. I am not telling you to not use Oscar if you should choose to do so but what I am telling you is check for pricing somewhere else first (like AJPM across the street who actually shows their pricing on a live screen in their office). Based on my experience, if you don't have a good understanding of market price when you start negotiating with Oscar, you are going to lose money as he is focused on maximizing his return on your metals even if the pricing he offers is not reflective of the true value of your metals. About a week after my conversation with Sal, I came back ready to purchase the ring. This time, I was greeted by a different employee, a woman with white hair whose name I unfortunately did not get. After I pointed out the ring we had selected, she immediately told me that it was "probably not the ring" I was referring to. She then informed me that the ring was actually priced approximately $2,000 higher than the amount I had been quoted. A small discrepancy of $100-$300 would be understandable, but a $2,000 increase is significant and difficult to overlook. As we discussed the issue, Sal happened to come out from the back. The employee (The woman) began explaining why the higher price made sense, stating that if they sold the ring at the original quoted price, they would essentially be "giving it away for free." Considering the agreed-upon price was still $4,600, that explanation did not sit well with me. I may have misread the situation, but it seemed as though even Sal was uncomfortable with how the conversation was being handled. In the end, I acknowledge that I should have requested a written quote, and that's a lesson I'll take with me moving forward. However, the experience left me disappointed. What started as an exciting purchase for a major life moment ended with confusion, frustration, and a lost sale.
