Maybe put a sign up on the door or something to let folks know would be a good idea. This place is always busy on the weekends when they sell tamales, menudo and carnitas. LONG lines in the drive thru lane so I'd imagine they sell a lot. BUzt perhaps better planning and signage would avoid disappointed customers. I doubt I'll be back.

Everyone dresses with bakers hats and the place is clean and you can smell the fresh baked bread being cooked. The service is a great as well. As soon as we were seated, we were helped and our order was taken. From there it just became a below average experience. The eggs were fine but look at the pictures. The hashbrowns look store bought or like from a fast food joint. The ham was thin sliced and looked like a cut from a deli meat package from the store. This was very disappointing for the price of I believe $11.99 for this plate. You can get much better food for $12.00 in the RGV. The best thing about this place was the pan dulce/sweet bread. The conchas were good. My advice if you are in the area, stop for the pan dulce but skip the over priced breakfast food because you will be disappointed like I was. 3 stars for the cleanliness and ambiance and pan Dulce. That's about it!

He spoke Spanish and English. The prices here were good, kinda low for the wedding cake cookies but not complaining. Some of the bread was a little dry but the piggy cookies were sweet and moist. The owner and baker, Erik, is friendly and helpful for a visiting birder like me who is unfamiliar with the unique south of the border pastries. The shelves are filled with everything from your standard raised donuts to cream cheese empanadas and conchas to marranitos and other pastries I can't remember the names of. But the names don't matter when they're as delicious as these are. Custards and jellies added gloriously decadent highlights to the treats. If you're visiting the area, particularly if you're on an early morning birding trek visiting the refuges and parks along the border, this is a must visit.

So, before breakfast commenced and the coffee from Chiapas was poured for those attending, we opened the box to discover the colorful mix she had chosen. The flaky brown and tan biscuits were the first plate we tried with our homemade strawberry jam and cream cheese. I tasted mine plain at first to get a sense of the composition. The resounding taste of butter in the near bread told me of the quality was on par with any I had enjoyed before. Biscuits are not difficult to make, but doing so consistently is important. Then we tasted the dark brown gingerbread pigs, known as "puerquitos", which were gloriously fresh with a dusting of confectionery sugar. I was impressed again and the subtle taste of piloncillo found its way into every taste. While it's mildly unfair to review a place based solely on its takeout, El Fenix made a very good impression on me, and I look forward to visiting in the near future.
