Desire ""Hair Salon" technically is as it's name states but really is more like a barbershop which…read moreis primarily a "black" barbershop although I've seen all types of folks come here for cuts including Asian dudes and women who have shorter hair and more. I've personally been coming here for well over 10 years and still get my haircut here even when I visit NJ. I come exclusively to see Jay. There are other talented barbers here but Jay seems to be the most constant and consistent. The prices are decent especially considered the quality cut I get here. I feel Like the prices are fair but if you're seeking a more complex haircut, it may cost more as it's posted. The shop is located right in the "University Village" part of South Orange, about 5 blocks from downtown South Orange. There is a lot across the street to park and on street if any spots are available. There is a 'sister shop' called "Desire Hair Salon II" which identical to this one in how it's run and clientele closer to Downtown. That said, this one remains my favorite.

BEWARE of Joyce at Joyce Hair Cut in East Hanover. On 5/3/2025, both my adult daughter and I…read morereceived haircuts that were completely opposite of what we requested. We specifically asked for layered trims to maintain a soft, flowy look. A self photo was shown for reference. Instead, we were left with choppy bangs with chunks of hair missed, uneven layering, and a long strand in the back that was completely untouched and clearly visible when in a ponytail. The hair does not curve in softly toward the body's center as requested when brought forward; Instead it looks jagged, harsh, and messy. Joyce told us to "wait 2 days" for the cut to settle. We did. Photos were sent on days 5, 8, 9, 12, and throughout 2 to 4+ weeks. The haircut never improved. The choppiness remained, and the result still looked amateur and careless. Texted Joyce, on 5/18/2025, explaining the issues in detail and requested a refund. Ponytail is worn daily to hide the uneven trim even though uncut pieces of hair stick out and daughter hides her hair under a hat. Coworkers asked what happened to the haircut. Joyce's response blamed the poor result on dry hair, not being blown out, and personal aesthetics, saying she's been in business based on word-of-mouth. She refused a refund and continued texting in Chinese despite repeated requests for English. She offered a "free fix"; not convenient to return and do not trust her to cut hair again. The issue is not dry hair or lack of styling. It's incompetent execution. Other stylists have trimmed long, Chinese hair without needing any products or blow drying. This was a simple dry cut that went very wrong. Joyce refuses to refund either haircut and only accepts cash or Zelle, which gives the customer no protection. Another stylist will fix her work.

Bought a Groupon for a haircut & all over highlights package. It was a total disappointment. Asked…read morefor blonde highlights but ended up with stripey strange hair. Some of my highlights on the back was burned. I am also unsatisfied with my haircut. The salon owner rushed the entire process and left my hair wet because i didn't ask for blow dry. At the end of the sesssion I was charged $25 for having long hair. So I ended up paying $100. The extra fee for long hair wouldn't bother me if I received proper service. Anyway I left the salon without saying anything since my hair was wet and the blonde highlights looked more saturated. Once it dried and I saw the actual color I was so upset and called the salon for a redo. She agreed that I pay $25 for product fee. She claimed that thats what I wanted and it looks nice. It would look better if I had blow dry. When I didn't agree and hung up the phone she called back and offered me to apply toner for free. I believe toner itself can't fix this hair. I wouldn't risk coming here for major color changes. It might seem affordable at first but might end up like me and have to pay way more to fix it later.

Where! Where! Where! is the Zero.. I have been very sick…read more, on oxygen and steroids for some 28 months now. Being in this condition was hard for me to get to hair salon. My hair got so long , down to my waist. Finally, I went to Glo salon that I been following them for sometime in facebook. Beautiful work. So , I snapped 2 photos and I told Dominica what I wanted to get done. She said that the clients in both pictures is her work. Fine. I was looking at color, highlights and cut. After 4 long hours, sitting in that chair , on oxygen, this is what I got. As sick as I am when she told me $445.00 I got even sicker. Very very expensive. But, if she did good job , fine .I do this twice a year. Base Color is red, there are no highlights,, and cut is like 2 year old chopping it all off.

I arrived for my appointment and was offered a selection of beverages. In addition, I was asked…read morecomplete some forms. After completing the forms and receiving my beverage, I was greeted by my nail technician. I had gel on my nails that needed soaking and the nail technician stated that the owner said that it will be an extra charge to remove the gel on my nails. I then consulted with the owner about it and she informed me that there will be no charge. To make a long story short, it took almost three hours for my gel manicure to be completed. The mail technician seemed nervous and not thoroughly skilled. She made a mention of learning a technique in cosmetology school. Which lead me to believe she was somewhat a novice and it showed after my nails were done. I kept asking her to redo some of my nails as it came out bumpy with air bubbles. There was another customer waiting a good while for a pedicure. I can tell she was getting impatient by a comment she made to the owner. I had to leave after hours of sitting to get my gel manicure professionally done and the end result was the worst I've ever received. In a nutshell, the place looks nice and the offering of beverages while you wait is a nice touch. However, the real reason I came to establishment proved to be a horrid experience. I will never patronize Glo again. Arrived just in time. My time in this place surpassed that. Though redone, it still came out bad. Those pictures are what the end results were. Owner, did not get to see that. Did/will not pay for this. Thank goodness for Groupon's buyer remorse. Owner, never offered any remorse. She was too busy. Additionally, the technicians's knowledge and experience is something that should be addressed accordingly before servicing a customer. Get it right.
