Such a wonderful restaurant on the edge of Wallowa Lake! The sweet couple who run the restaurant, Michael & Dionne, are second generation owner/operators, and oh so kind! From the moment we walked in, Michael asked the last name on the reservation and had memorized first when we told him. Vali's does one meal per evening, from 6pm-8pm and requires reservations. Everyone is served the same meal, with the only option variations being in drinks and the dessert you choose. The meal include appetizers, main course, and dessert. They have a menu that varies week to week, but that is always delicious! Tonight we enjoyed pork schnitzel, red cabbage, and au gratin potatoes! The pork schnitzel was perfectly tender with a crispy crust, the red cabbage cooked JUST right with a perfect amount of sweetness, and the au gratin potatoes were nice & cheesy! Our dessert options were between Pistachio Creme Brulee with Cherries, Chocolate Ginache, or Apple Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream. My Pistachio Creme Brulee was AMAZING, as was my wife's Apple Cobbler! The entire meal is such a personal experience, hosted by this wonderful couple that you KNOW want you to have the best experience possible. We didn't get to speak with Dionne, just received a kind wave from the kitchen, with a "Thank you for coming in!" I'd love to have Dionne come out from the kitchen to socialize after the desserts have been served! She seemed very sweet. All in all, I can't recommend this place enough. There was a table of eight, with four generations, that said they'd been coming annually for many years, and I can't blame them. Call for a reservation. It is small and quaint but the decor is cool. It's a family business. We had salad, steak, mash potatoes, asparagus, and dessert. It's only one entree a night. If you don't like what they are serving that day, call ahead to see if they can substitute. They do homemade donuts as well but it gets booked up. Very good! I'd recommend going! read more

We went to Vali's for our anniversary after wanting to go for years and it did not disappoint. The owners (who are also the chefs and servers) are absolutely delightful and the food is even better. We went on Sunday which was their Schnitzel night (it is a prix fixe situation) and everything from appetizers to dessert was out of this world delicious. If you have not had the pleasure of eating here at some point over the last 50 years, get on it. It's the closest you'll get to experiencing an alpine restaurant without leaving the states, and the second generation has made the trip just as rewarding (and even tho it sounds a bit much I wanna say magical) as the first generation did. I feel like they're family because that's how they make everyone feel and they're genuine. This will be their last year and you'll regret missing your chance. The whole Wallowa Lake experience is nothing but good and Vali's has always been the gem of each trip. Ordered donuts on Sunday morning. Excellent! Unfortunately we discovered this place too late and already had dinner plans Sunday, but it is top on the list for next time (also, we wanted the full experience, right now it is only an abbreviated takeout menu). Absolutely excellent Thursday meal, despite having to be take-out during COVID. The staff could not have been nicer. We had the doughnuts on Saturday and there is no question that they were the best doughnuts we've ever had. If we'd known we would have bought a dozen! Wallowa Lake Resort is truly an oasis. One big reason we enjoyed our cabin rental during the early summer pandemic, was the next door Vali's FINE dining restaurant take out experience. Place a Weekend order a couple days before, so they know how many to make. I KNOW you have never indulged in a proper doughnut like these. They are worlds removed from any grocery store donut or even your probable favorite chain. Get the jelly doughnut- it isn't made from fruit flavored gelatin or cornstarch, it's made from down home, home made Mountain real jam inside. We had the pleasure of having dinner recently at Vali's. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about our evening there. From the incredible Shrimp and Corn Fritters with Mango Habanero Sauce, the Honey Jerked Salmon with Coconut Lime Rice with Pineapple Salsa and grilled vegetables. Every bite was an explosion of deliciousness and cooked to perfection. We were too full to eat our dessert which was apple strudel, so we opted to take it home to enjoy the next morning with our morning coffee! It was also fabulous and just the way we remembered the apple strudel in Vienna! Light, flaky and not overly sweet. Michael was extremely welcoming, friendly and accommodating. We were very impressed with the quality of food and the service. Even Michael's lovely wife, Dionne came out of the kitchen to say hello to us even though she was very busy preparing the dinners. That was so sweet of her and it didn't go unnoticed. We highly recommend Vali's Alpine Restaurant at Wallowa Lake. We can't wait to return. I simply do not have enough good things to say about Vali's. My now-husband and I were scheduled for Sunday schnitzel dinner as a way to kick off our honeymoon. I unfortunately got sick the week of the wedding, was unable to pack for our trip, and we had to push things back by a day. Michael was incredibly helpful in refunding our money and getting us on our way. We rescheduled for chicken paprikash on Thursdays and naturally ran into more weird online hiccups that aren't worth explaining but merit mentioning because Michael was yet again incredibly understanding and accommodating. Our chicken paprikash was delicious, especially combined with the spaetzle. The rolls that came with dinner were still warm and the cucumber salad was the right mix of sweet and sour. We ordered the dessert special of the week (a Paris-Brest) and a piece of apple strudel, which came complete with some vanilla ice cream. The two of us devoured the desserts in about 30 seconds because they were so tasty. On Saturday, we picked up donuts for our ride home and received a glazed twist, a chocolate bavarian, and a peach danish. Again, also amazing. The glaze on the peach danish was to die for and the fruit itself didn't taste sweetened, which balanced the whole thing out nicely. All in all, great people and AMAZING food. I spent most of our trip comparing other meals to Vali's and keep commenting to my husband that we need to make it back to Joseph sooner to eat more. I'd highly recommend, especially when eaten in the park with a view of the lake. read more

What a wonderful recommendation from a local in town, Joesph OR. Open Wednesday through Sunday with a limited menu. They serve one entree with sides and a dessert. And 2 seatings, 5:00 and 7:00 so make a reservation!!! We were in town and made a reservation for Sunday and hit the jackpot. Pork schnitzel with sweet/sour red cabbage and au gratin potatoes. Individually, each item was delicious. In combination, beyond spectacular. A little schnitzel with the cabbage and a swipe of the cheesy potatoes made me go back for more, and more. Four choices for dessert ended the meal. Wonderful hosts, friendly and attentive. Next time, I have my eye on the Hungarian goulash, a family recipe or the alternating Friday menu. Kids love the traditional decor & the owners are super nice, even calling me 'love' when I bought s cup of coffee, served in a china tea cup. Vali's serves the best food you will eat in Eastern Oregon. If you have not been, prepare yourself for gourmet. The restaurant itself is small with a casual Hungarian "cottage" style decor. The food, in contrast, is more at the level of Seattle's famous Canlis restaurant, but with a rich, flavorful and hearty, Hungarian spin. The Vali family knows what they're doing. My husband and I as well as our families have been on several occasions and each visit always ranks among my favorite memories, not only because of the phenomenal food (eg. Hungarian beef and dumplings or duck leg), but also for the thoughtful and intimate service and setting. We recommend Vali's Alpine Restaurant to all our guests at Eagle Cap Chalets. I would say this is the best restaurant in the area, and I love that it's owned and operated by a local couple (she does the cooking he does the serving). That's it. Nothing fancy, except good home cooking. The wine by the glass options could be better (if you like good or even decent wine just order the beer). But the food can't be beat, especially for the area. We will be back to Joseph every summer for years and Vali's will always be a stop for us. read more

IMHO the best restaurant in Wallowa County. You do need to plan ahead for reservations and the menu for dinner is limited to that particular day. The food and service are second to none. This place reminds me of how small restaurants used to be and how real food should taste and the deserts !! Went to Vali's last night on my sister in law's suggestion and it was amazing. We had the flank steak with blue cheese butter and it was to die for! The restaurant does one meal a night as a husband and wife duo. It makes it so easy to go and know what you will have ahead of time. My kids loved their steak as well and ate it all.
