Hotel Rocca della Sena - Hotel Rooftop View

We were greeted by gracious hotel staff that offered us champagne to enjoy on the rooftop terrace. When you walk out onto the terrace, you get the most incredible views. They also have a hot tub on the rooftop. The main lobby of the hotel small but includes a dining area where you eat breakfast and a small wine cellar. The receptionist are great and can book any events or make restaurant reservations for you. The rooms are very clean and spacious compared to a lot of the other hotels in the area. Overall, a wonderful hotel with some of the most beautiful views of Tropea. I highly recommend staying here on your next trip.

A boutique hotel in Tropea overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea that has it all....and then some!…read more Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood a few short blocks from the main Piazza, The Hotel Rocca Della Sena, is an exquisitely appointed 15-room boutique hotel with sweeping, panoramic views of the sea and every ammenity that travelers would want to experience when planning an authentic Italian seaside holiday in true Italian tradition and comfort. Having come from Sorrento after a week's visit, it is obvious to me that the Calabria coastal region is the best kept secret of Italy. The medieval history, architecture, piazza, churches, food and warmth of the local people beckon you to stay, enjoy, be nurtured and rejuvenated by all that southern Italy has to offer. Wake up to the sound of the sea and enjoy the hotel's outstanding breakfast selection with every choice of fresh, local foods that are both, extensive, delicious and characteristic of this region. All this with views of the sea from a position perched high above the cliffs. An ideal location to walk to the grand piazza, which is perhaps the most charming, piazza I have seen in all of Italy with it's many medieval buildings, cobblestone streets that meander throughout the town, taking you through dim lit alleyways that boast one market, restaurant and boutique after another. Here you will find the multi-generational locals who embrace all tourists with open arms and wide smiles. Though English is limited, the body language says it all...." Benvenuto nella nostra città e apprezzare tutto ciò che abbiamo da offrire . Siamo molto orgogliosi di Tropea e la sua ricca storia." (translated: welcome to our town and appreciate all that we have to offer. We are very proud of Tropea and it's rich history."

In short, had we not stayed in some magnificent places in Italy, perhaps we would consider Tropis…read moreto be an overall ok place to stay. It's a relatively clean, quiet place to sleep, but unfortunately that's all it had going for it (certainly not making it a 4-star hotel). Here are the details that, individually may not make or break your stay, but together added to our dissatisfaction: WiFi is VERY spotty in room, if it works at all. Reception helpful, but requires you to advocate for yourself. Not initially forthcoming with details about hotel (for example, we eventually found out they charge €3, per towel, for use of pool towels. NO free towels?!?; Balcony room means you're staring at the back of another building. Must upgrade €20, per room, per day, for decent balcony view). Knowledge of English by the reception is poor. This causes unnecessary challenges in communications, especially at a hotel that caters to international tour groups. Dinner at restaurant = below average American catering hall food......leading to gastric issues the the next day. SUGGESTION: Eat in Tropea.....spent less money in Tropea for a exponentially better and more filling meal! Free breakfast options are tough, not flavorful, and unappealing. Cappuccino machine only partially works. Shampoo = conditioner = body wash.....all in one bottle. Clean towels left on reused bed spread. No clean towels found in bathroom. FORGET ABOUT THE "TOWEL ANIMALS" and put the clean towels where they belong! Shower is the same size as an inside stateroom shower on a US based cruise ship. There is plenty of extra, unused, space in bathroom to make shower bigger. King size bed = 2 twin beds that separate in the middle of the night (other hotels have figured out a way to avoid this). Only 1 pillow per person....must ask for second pillow. 1990s era decor, requires SIGNIFICANT updating to be within "4 star ranking"! Poor lighting in room, no way to increase lighting....creates orange hue on everything. Checkout at 10AM... Water in sink and shower non-potable, as indicated on a sign. Must take potable water from breakfast, or buy potable water to brush teeth safely. A/C settings default to highest temperature and shut off every time you leave room, requiring you to reset. Pool closed for the ENTIRE afternoon Sun deck and "garden" above pool closed at time of sunset, found locked with a chain! Stated open hours are 0900-2100. SUMMARY: 2 star hotel AT BEST Similar to interstate Best Western in the US
