Mounira did an excellent job on my Senegalese twists yesterday! I called on Thursday and they were able to fit me in on Sunday at 8am - woo hoo! Mounira was very sweet and answered the million and one questions I asked her about how to care for my hair and keep my twists looking fresh. She started on my hair around 8:30 and by 1:30 she was finished! She took her time and cleaned up all of my twists and finished the ends, and by 2:30 I was out the door! AMAZING! I live in Alexandria, and have had braids done in local shops, but I have to say that it is worth taking the trip up to DC to Uzuri. The price is right, and I had an excellent customer experience. The shop was not overcrowded, they honored my appointment time (bonus points for getting me in on a Sunday) and I was out the door with enough time to enjoy the rest of my day. The other ladies who work in the shop were very kind as well, and I was able to relax and chat and laugh with them while having my hair done. I'm back at work today with my new 'do and I've gotten quite a few compliments on my hair. I will definitely be going back! read more

So the braider that does small braids does not want to braid small braids because it hurts her wrists and she doesnt want to stand on her feet all day, so she prefers larger braids??? Umm I want smaller braids and I will be paying for them, Im sorry but that is your braiders issue.. I went here once before and the fact that I sat with a woman that obviously did not wash or use deodorant was enough that I did not want to come back but I thought I would try. She told me I have to get large braids because she doesnt want to be bothered with small??? This is just triffling on all levels. The owner doesnt care about reviews or clients, she really doesnt. They are overpriced and just tacky. Oh and last time I was there she used both bundles of hair and ran out of my hair and said I really needed to purchase 3 bundles of human hair. I think she stole some I have never run out of hair and my braids were thin and scarce. I think she was taking some of my hair on the side to shape up someone else later. Uzuri Braids is a great salon. I've been going there now for about 8 months. The ladies are friendly and the salon is very nice. They are true to appointment times and the salon has a very nice feel. They do sisterlocs, loc maintenance and braiding, but I go for the two strand twists. They are so good. I see Janice but the other ladies are also great. I've seen their work while I get my hair done and everybody is on the level. Prices are very reasonable. I have a big head so gotta give good tips. :) read more

Uzuri Braids is a good salon. I've been going there on and off for about five or six years. They specialized in natural hair, mainly loc maintenance. The prices are on the high end. The stylists are friendly and the salon is very nice. They are true to appointment times and the salon has a very nice feel. I will say this, you get what you pay for, so even though there prices are on the high end. That's because they are experience in hair care, and healthy hair. read more

My sister has been trying to talk me into braids for at least a decade...I finally bit the bullet when my natural hair hit that hard-to-manage in-between length and I'm so happy I did. I selected Uzuri based on Yelp reviews and they didn't let me down. Everyone in the shop is friendly and hilarious to boot, which makes the time go by faster. My style took ten hours (which my sister says is pretty typical) and if I had one teensy complaint, it would be that I wasn't offered a stretch break or a snack or something (but now I know to bring my own and speak up). Other than that, this place exceeded my expectations for their skill and clear commitment to black hair. read more

Awesome work! Moriah did my mid back box braids n it took no time. (5hrs) it was a great price too. Everyone was very nice and funny. She took one 5 minute break which wasn't at all an issue to me. She didn't do a whole lot of talking (which is also not a problem). One of the ladies even helped me find parking which was nice. As soon as I stepped out of the salon people were stopping and commenting on their great work. I'm soooo happy with my hair and will def be back. read more

I went to Uzuri Braids Saturday August 6th for Senegalese twists, I was informed that they would be $180 for regular sized braids. I was okay with that, and washed my hair before going to my visit and arrived on time for my 9am appointment. The stylist, Mariah, was about 10 minutes late. I was a little bothered but I understand that things happen, even though I had called Friday and confirmed my appointment time for 9am. The salon was itself wasn't glamorous but neither was it disgusting. The environment is nice and quiet, it's just the 4 stylist (including Mariah) and they seem to have a loyal following. The stylist were all polite and did their work without pause or interference. Its a very family type environment and the women seem to have a good friendship and genuine care for each other. Mariah seems to be the only stylist in the shop that braids hair using hair, and everyone else does natural hair and locks. While sitting in the chair there wasn't much talking, which I don't mind and she stayed diligent on her work. No breaks, or pauses and her grip wasn't super tight especially around the edges which one looks for when getting their hair braided. When she was finished 5 hours late, which is quick, I looked at the hair and wasn't 100% happy being that I could see little fuzzy pieces, but I chalked that up to my hair being short, but I was ready to get up out of the chair and enjoy my Saturday. I enjoyed the hair up until the first braid came out on Wednesday. 3 braids fell out in that one day. I was heated, and called the shop to let them know, due to their weekday hours I'd be in on Saturday August 13th to get her to fix the braids that fell out and correct the remaining braids so it won't happen again. More hair came out between Wednesday and Saturday, some unraveled from the ends, and others just slipped out from the root. I arrived Saturday and she fixed the problem, or so I thought, by gluing the ends and fixing braids that looked to be coming out. I thanked her and left the shop. By Tuesday more and more braids fell out. By that Friday the braids in the lower back left corner of my hair were all out, I had to wear my hair to the side in order to cover the problem. Braids in the front of my head started falling out too, and I had to try and camouflage this by various means. I refuse to go back to the salon to have my hair done. I realized that she wasn't a good braider not just based on the fact that the braids fell out only 4 days in but because she never explained to me why the hair fell out or offered to refund me any money. I feel that when you're doing someone's hair it's important to be honest and let them know what their hair can and can't do. If you felt my hair and saw that it was too soft and too short, why not tell me that and suggest another hair style that my hair can handle, Yes, I would've been disappointed but I would've appreciated honesty and by doing that she would've had a loyal customer. But because she didn't say anything, not the first time or even the second time I won't be back. I think that a lot of businesses neglect customer service and in the age of technology where people can blog and review, these businesses are doing themselves a disservice. Uzuri is still the most professional braiding salon in DC. I haven't worn braids in a while, but I decided to get Senegaliese twist done becasue of this hot and humid DC summer. Mariah was so fast and didn't pull my hair. I love my braids and have gotten so many compliments. Denise and the rest of the ladies are so funny (but conversations were kept PG). I also like that the TV was tuned to MSNBC, but the volume was not too loud. When it comes to braids and natural hair, you get what you pay for. Dorian did my individual braids. I went in with a picture of what I wanted and immediately she stepped in, gave really helpful advice, and started up. Wonderful service and a wonderful job. This is MY hair salon. They are professional and efficient with their work. The owner Denise styles my hair in flat twist updos and I love them each time. She also makes sure that every client is happy with their hair style. This place may carry the word "braids" in its title but its actually a full service salon that specializes in braid styles, loc maintenance, sista loc maintenance, and natural hair care along with styling. I needed my senegalese touched up so I looked on yelp for a braid shop with good reviews. I came across this one and called. On the website it shows their hours are 8am-8pm Tues thru Sat and on Sun by appointment. But come to find out you need an appointment regardless. When I inquired on coming in on a Saturday, I was told they were booked and would need to schedule for Tuesday. I reminded them that the website shows appointments on Sundays. The receptionist said there was only one woman that does touchups and she doesnt take Sunday appointments. I shared that I needed my senegalese done this weekend so wasn't interested in a Tues appointment. She said if someone cancelled she would call me. Lo and behold she called me at 12:24 pm and said there was an opening before 2:30pm so I could come now? I exclaimed a resounding yes! I rushed to get there by 1pm and called at 1:05pm telling them I was down the street. They asked who I had an appointment with but I couldn't remember her name. I told them it started with an M. They acted like they were puzzled for several minutes going over stylists names that didnt begin with a M. Then they had an ah ha moment and asked if it was Mariah? Umm, I suppose so. I get there and they ask who did my braids. I said some woman in Maryland. They said we dont redo other people's work. What!!!??? Why wasnt that the first question you asked me when I was on the phone? Why wouldn't that stringent policy be on your website? It was clear that I have never been here before because I told her that when she asked how fast I could get here and I responded that you're on Kennedy right? And I didn't know the name of the one person in charge of touchups. Since this miscommunication was their bad you would think some accommodation could be made. Nope. She stood there repeating that they don't redo other people's work. I walked out. Beyond unbelievable. Unprofessional. Absurd. Ridiculous. read more

OMG. I have NEVER gotten my hair done in 2.5 hours!!! My appointment was for 7:30am. I was on time however it LOOKED like nobody was in the shop because the lights were off so I sat in my car. At 7:45 I received a call from the owner wondering where I was. After I explained, she told me that my stylist - Mounira - was inside waiting. I felt so bad. However Mounira was very pleasant and understanding so I felt better. She got started about 8am and was done by 10:30 AND she took a 15 minute breakfast break!! Make no mistake - her quality of work was amazing despite how fast she works and your scalp won't feel like it's on fire! My finished style was medium sized, mid-back Marley twists. They do provide hair -$5/pack which is not includes in the price. Make sure you check to see if they have your color. The prices are a wee bit higher then others however to have professionals who are dependable, on-time, and fast, makes the price worth it! read more
