It was built in 1961, and one of the employees pulled out a plaque to show me. Initially, this clerk was kinda salty, telling me I couldn't take photos, but I assured him that I already had, and have been to over 100 post offices in VA with nary an issue. He chilled out after that. I loved the holiday display out front and the tidy grounds. Inside was clean and the brass mailboxes were a cool vintage feature. Ruthville is named after Ruth Brown with the establishment of the post office in 1880. She was the wife of a prominent landowner, Abraham Brown. According to the last census in 2020, there were only 6 housing units and a population of 5! Ruthville is tiny, only 0.055 sq. miles. Residents in the Charles City area also use this post office although there is a Charles City Branch off of Rt. 5 on Courthouse Road just 5 minutes away. This is considered an historic landmark and is quite large for serving such a small community. I like the white painted cinder block building with its handicapped access, vintage touches (the wrought iron can be seen at the top of the ceiling), its brass mailboxes, and antique lighting. There's also a drive by drop mailbox outside. Love it for its history! Hours M-F 12:30-4:30, Saturday 8:00-11:30 No passport service

When you walk in you come to some stamp machines where you can purchase stamps. Now if you need some service head over to the counter. They have the post and ropes for line control if needed. But every time I've been there they have not had them in use. The folks that work at this location are great. They get you taken care of as quickly as possible, so what more can you ask of them.

When I got inside, there was one person in front of me at the desk. There was one person working the desk while all the others were in the back watching inappropriate videos out loud, cursing, and laughing at the videos. After 20 minutes of waiting, the line was wrapped out the door. The first lady was trying to reopen a closed P.O. Box that belonged to someone else (Steve who lives in WV). Another lady was called to the front to take over & the customer asked if she could come back tomorrow with Steve on FaceTime to show his ID & mortgage to have his P.O. Box reopened. The post office lady said, "we aren't supposed to do that", but she didn't specifically say she wouldn't do that. She let that customer leave thinking she could do that the next day without being 100% clear that she couldn't. When I got my turn, I had a horrible attitude. I just wanted my receipt so that I could leave. I got it and left with the line even longer. This office is horribly unprofessional & I see why their rating is so low. I plan to complain to USPS directly with the information about that P.O. Box issue because it is unethical & no one else is able to open/reopen a P.O. Box via FaceTime. So, don't pick and choose to do so when it's convenient. These people need customer service and ethics training ASAP!

The carrier for Friday was not my regular carrier, didn't see the one for saturday. perhaps more training would clear this issue up. Sophia usually handled that arena by mostly ordering online, but we were running short so I was given the task to pick some up. It was right after I got off work so I stopped by on the way home. Foot traffic was very minimal which resulted in no wait at all. I actually stood in line for no longer than 15 seconds. As stated earlier, it was for buying a book of stamps. To my surprise, the cost for the book was over $14. Back when I used to ship items off by mail, stamps cost under $10. It's crazy to see the prices go up each year. Unfortunately, we have to accept the changes and move on. Besides the price increase, the transaction went smooth as usual. I know this location will always come in handy for yours truly. A few years ago I had a package sent that the sender forgot to include my apt number on. My regular mailman had the day off and I just happened to be grabbing the mail and saw that the package was not delivered. We tracked it and saw it was being sent back the the sender, so we rushed to the post office. The person behind the counter got the tracking info from us and decided to check for it and found it right away. Another time recently my mailman saw me near the mailbox and gave me a shout because he had a package that was too big for my mailbox and would've had to be picked up from the post office otherwise. This location does get really busy, there are a lot of apartments nearby in walking distance. Sometimes they are understaffed, but that is the case almost everywhere. Everyone I have worked with here has been professional.
