Tours outside of those hours are available by appointment. So this was a trickier attraction to visit. I had been looking forward to touring this Jones County attraction, so when my schedule opened up a free Thursday, I rearranged my schedule so that I could tour this property. I had called the listed phone number many times to set up an appointment, but never received a callback. I even called before I left that morning, and the recording said tours were available at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm, and cost $20 cash. I arrived at 1:36pm, only to find the gates shut. I called both numbers listed on the sign again and left more messages, but never heard back. I did notice a car and a truck parked outside the home. Thinking I was just too early, I drove past the property a few times, closer to 2 and at 2, but the gates were still shut. It is a beautiful property, but be warned: even if you follow their posted hours and instructions to the letter, there is no guarantee someone will actually be there to let you in. It may no longer be open for tours.

New Bern residents that saw us in a restaurant or other places went out of her way to say thank you to us for being there to help. Love the people, places, and the charming Bear statues everywhere. New Bern was founded in 1710 by a Swiss entrepreneur from Bern, Switzerland. Bern in Swiss means bear which is why there are many bear statues. We thank you so much for the kind hospitality. In the short time we were there, we did did our best and worked hard. We know there is still much work to be done as New Bern is one of the hardest hit cities in NC affected by the hurricane. It had been quite awhile since we'd spent any time in this beautiful, historic town snuggled up…read moreagainst the Neuse and Trent Rivers - but I can say without a doubt that we will be back for a visit between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when they go all out to make it a magical wonderland for kids of all age. So much of the architectural integrity of the the central downtown area has been preserved, even highlighted, as the city has grown and spread out in a much more modern fashion. There are over 160 houses and buildings within in walking distance of the waterfront that are on the National Register, and that area contains almost 2000 crape myrtles, the city's official flower. It is a great deal of fun to walk around the downtown area, especially at night when the buildings are all lit up, especially the beautiful City Hall building. New Bern was founded in 1710 by Swiss and Palatine German immigrants, and it is the second oldest city in North Carolina to be settled by Europeans. The town was named for Bern, the capital of Switzerland, and the hometown of many of the initial settlers. The coat of arms of Bern contains the symbol of a bear, and there are brightly painted statues of bears all over the historical area of New Bern, and even an attractive little section named Bear Park.

This building is the main courthouse and houses the County Superior Court and the County District Court of the 3rd Judicial District. The rectangular-shaped red-brick building is two stories and faces east. There is a tall square tower with an entrance on the ground floor with a steep roof that rises above the roof line on the east front. At the north and south extremities are one story arched porticos, while the second story windows are arched. The structure's roof is mansard-shaped. The first story's interior has a cross hall layout with a central hallway. The second-story courtroom takes up the entire width of the structure. Street parking and a dedicated lot are nearby. We arrived at the AOH Museum right as they opened. We were greeted by the museum curator who was a simply delightful man who gave us the warmest of welcomes. He told us it was a self-guided tour and handed us the written information for the tour. He added that he was available for answers to any questions we had. We started in the dining room. Before I go on, I should share that I'm a psychic medium and any historical spots usually are interesting for me. Anyhow, two or three steps in I sensed someone standing to my left. I thought it was interested in my boyfriend so I walked from the spot. No, this spirit was walking with me. I walked into the hallway where we started and was greeted by another staff member who was super friendly and accommodating. The three of us chatted about the area and the building. I finally asked if there was anything "unusual " about the building. She felt I meant structural. So my boyfriend simply said, "spirits". She immediately referenced a woman named Miss Mary. I pointed to my left and whispered, "she is standing right here" as I pointed to my left. The guide seemed delighted. We continued walking throughout the building and we were joined by the curator once again while he was told what I was and what I was getting. He too was thrilled and pointed out amazing and interesting facts about the building and the people associated with it throughout its history. The curator did not have to stop and spend such wonderful time with us. I was honored as he spoke with such passion and love for his work. I could go on about the things that I "picked up" but I'll save that for future visitors. We were overwhelmed with the hospitality and kindness of the curator and staff as they made us feel welcome. I won't forget this visit...ever.
