    US Post Office, Ochopee FL
    Bruce K.

How can you NOT stop here if you're passing by? It is the cutest post office, considered the smallest in the United States. According to the near by historical marker, it used to be an irrigation pipe shed before it was used after a fire in 1953 burned the existing general store and post office. It's been in continuous use ever since. [Review 12365 overall, 2151 of 2019.]

    Tiny but fully functional PO!

If you are in a rush, drive through the alligator alley or I-75. If you want some entertainment, drive through US-41 from Collier County to Miami. One stop you can make is at Ochopee shortly after you pass US-29. Watch out for a sign 'Post Office.' It is the smallest post office building in US. It is measured roughly 8 x 8. It was a former piping shed for a tomato company. The general store and post office were burned down in 1953. This building was put in commission and still serve the residents of Ochopee! If you are in the area during their hours of operation, drop by to have your letters or mail post marked with 'Ochopee, FL 34141, smallest post office building in the U.S.A' or buy a postcard with the stamp on it.

We were driving by and saw a sign for post office. This must be THE smallest post office in the world! Someone was actually working in there. I think I would have been a little claustrophobic. Lol.

You never know what you will find when you are out exploring the Everglades. It just might be the smallest post office in the United States! It's located in Ochopee which is an unincorporated community in Collier County. Ochopee is the Seminole word for farm. You can find the post office on the Tamiami Trail also known as U.S. 41, 65 miles west of Miami or 35 miles east of Naples. What is now the town of Ochopee started out as a one family tomato farm in the 1920's. A few buildings grew up around the farm and in 1953 a fire destroyed the town post office and general store. From that fateful event a 7 by 8 foot shed that used to store the irrigation pipes from the tomato farm next door was called into service and made into the tiny post office it is today. It is so small that there is only space for one postal clerk at a time. The post office services 300 patrons, mainly members of the local Miccosukee and Seminole Indian tribes. The population of Ochopee is said to be 129 people. The original tomato farm was taken over by the federal government as they set aside land for Everglades conservation. All that remains now are a few small businesses. Fun fact, the person who delivers the mail from this post office has to travel a route that stretches 170 miles through three counties. Should you happen to find yourself at the post office when they are open you can line up at the window for one of the postcards bearing the coveted Ochopee 34141 zip code. Unfortunately for me they were closed but I ran into a lot of other people who were stopping by during there visit to Big Cypress National Preserve. I even got to take a picture of a family from Switzerland in front of it. It turns out the United State's smallest post office is world famous.

Absolutely a photo op!!! Do not miss this little piece of history. The historic sign gives you the story. Easy in and easy out to get your picture!

You see, the plaque makes it legit

A true testament that some things should never change. Peter M. tells it better than I could've. One person inside and it has all the basics except for a restroom. I hear that it closes on occasion when the attendant has to pee. Just about everyone stopping here takes a picture of it, wouldn't you?

Had to stop at the smallest post office in the USA, right? To bad the are closed on Sunday, it would have been fun to peek inside
    Chris S.

Yep, it's tiny. Sadly they weren't open when we stopped by, but it was on the way to where were were going so by all means we stopped by!

Claims to be the smallest US Post Office

I found this place while mapping out a trip across Route 41 so there was no doubt I wanted to stop for a few minutes knowing it would be closed for the the July 4th Holiday. Considered to be the smallest post office in the United States, it's a little surprising this building hasn't under-gone any government sponsored renovations to bring it up to code to meet all the regulations required like any other federal facility being it was formerly an irrigation pipe shed belonging to the J.T. Gaunt Company tomato farm. It was hurriedly pressed into service by postmaster Sidney Brown after a disastrous night fire in 1953 burned Ochopee's general store and post office. The present structure has been in continuous use ever since-as both a post office and ticket station for Trailways bus lines-and still services residents in a three-county area, including deliveries to Seminole and Miccosukee Indians living in the region. Daily business often includes requests from tourists and stamp collectors the world over for the famed Ochopee post mark. The property was acquired by the Wooten Family in 1992. It's one of those places that's cool to stop and take a few photos of then move on...

Whats not to love about the smallest post office in the USA? This is a very cool little post office that once housed an irrigation system for a tomato farm. This little Post Office is a great place to send Postcards from The Everglades National Park or Big Cypress National Preserve. Overall this is a unique stop along Route 41 in Southern Florida.

We stopped on a whim and were shocked to find the Post Office open. A very nice woman (postmistress) was in charge and we were able to send some postcards from The Smallest Post Office. And, we received them the next day in our mailbox at home. This is truly one of the gems to be found on Old 41. If you are traveling across the Everglades, Old 41 offers many uniquely Florida experiences. Alligator Alley is for quick trips; Old 41 is for entertainment and a taste of Old Florida. This

The Ochopee post office is considered to be the smallest post office in the United States. The building was formerly an irrigation pipe shed that belonged to the J.T. Guant Company tomato farm. However, in 1953 it was rather quickly turned into the Ochopee's general store and post office by postmaster Sidney Brown after the original Ochopee post office burned down in the middle of the night. The present building has been in use ever since as both a post office and ticket station for Trailways bus line. It still services the residents in it's surrounding three county area as well as making regular deliveries to the Seminole and Miccosukee Native Americans who reside in the area.

A must-see if you're headed on the Tamiami Trail (and especially if you are a tourist), as this is the smallest post office in the United States. The building is actually a tiny shed, which looks as if it has taken quite a few beatings. The shed had a prior life as a storage facility for irrigation pipes for a tomato farm, before it became the post office in 1953. The office is fully functional and famous for its post mark. They keep pre-stamped post cards on the counter for anyone who wants to have a little souvenir of his/her own and the person who delivers the mail from here has a daily route that stretches across three counties and is 132 miles long. Mail for over 900 residents is sorted here too. Check my picture of the post office's posted hours if you're planning to make a stop and want to see what the interior looks like, or if you want to get something postmarked!

That post office never answered the phone. Tried calling this post office and they never answer the phone. Do, I went in person. My carrier had told me that if one doesn't have the tracking number, it can be recovered if you know the date and post office from where you shipped. So I asked the clerk here about having this post office contact the sending post office to track down the tracking number. Her response was that they have only the same phone number available to the public, which is never answered. She also said she would not ask the post master to call me back and that she couldn't give out a number for any manager at this office. She claimed that there are no phone numbers available even internally to contact other stations except the publicly available on the USPS website. She also said that one of the reasons that phones aren't answered is that USPS managers spend all their time on conference calls. Now, previously, I have called local offices using the number off the USPS webs, so this appears to be a new policy. The clerk did offer the email of a manager, but also said my inquiry would likely be ignore as managers are so busy with their endless conference calls. And people wonder why the government is so unpopular.
