This lobby is atrocious. The lobby won't let you put your packages in the mail drop inside - you HAVE to put it in a collection box outside. Someone else and I needed to drop off a package and we couldn't find the collection box. It turned out that you had to turn the corner to find the collection box. Really? Also, the lobby smells like piss. Also, the lobby is lacking the important stickers for the automated postage center. For example, I attempted to mail a package today via the APC afterhours, and I needed to put a sticker on the box. It turned out that there were no stickers near the APC. All the stickers were behind locked doors. With no stickers, using the APC may be useless. Hence, I had to lug my box back to my house. FAIL. FAIL. FAIL. read more

I admit this is partially a review of the postal carrier who delivers my packages -- but he works from this office and has caused me to interact here more than I have ever wanted to. Apparently for Downtown/Belltown denizens you have 2 postal carriers: one for your normal letter mail, and a second for any packages you have sent your way. My normal mail-person? Stellar! I get my letters and he sends mine. No qualms there. The package guy? Well, calling him a lazy-good-for-nothing-jerk-face is putting my feelings ~nicely~ (and a bit immaturely perhaps). I don't get my packages delivered. I don't get notices left. I only know that a delivery was "attempted" by tracking it online. Those attempts? Never happened. I used to work from home and was there ALL day. Don't try to tell me I wasn't home when I was. So then I call the midtown post office. I schedule a redelivery. It never happens. I try it again, and request a call back form a supervisor. Guess what didn't happen? Yeah... I fought a month to get one package delivered, which was obnoxious since it was sent w/the 3 day option. The next time I didn't get a delivery but somehow managed a notice, I tried to have someone pick it up for me. I work during the post office's open hours -- so there is rarely a day/time frame i can make it myself. I call ahead of time -- make sure someone else can pick it up. I have a slip this time so I sign it and put their name on it. They then go take time out of their day to grab it for me -- and they wont give him the package since he doesn't live at the same address. When I call to clarify they again say anyone can pick it up, until I explain what happened and they back peddled what they said quicker than I could blink. I give them an extra star for when, by pure luck alone, I had an afternoon off I was able to go to the office and not wait half a lifetime to pick up my packages. From here on out I'm shipping Fedex/UPS or having packages delivered to my work. read more

This post office is such a hit or miss. I have gotten my passport application & photo in less than 20 minutes before. But I have waited in line to send a package that has taken 40+. Sometimes they will have all the supplies you need to get your package ready while in line, sometimes they wont. Sometimes the staff is super nice, sometimes they are not. I have tried to drop a package in the drop box before, but it was stuck shut. If you have never been on Third, let me explain to you, this is like a subsection of downtown. It's super sketch, and these sketch people like to hang out around the post office. But they are harmless don't worry. If you can find any other way to ship your items I suggest you do so. This place is deteriorating from the inside out. The walls are falling apart, there is no ceiling, the thought of touching anything makes me want to throw up because everything is filthy dirty. Aside from appearances you most likely will be standing in line for at least 15 min so prepare for that. And don't expect to be greeted with any friendliness, this staff has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. These people do not care about you are how long you have been waiting. Just toss your package up there give them the money and get the h*ll out of there as fast as you can before your nerves become so shot that it ruins the rest of your day. I will gladly pay more if I have to to ship my goods somewhere else. The USPS is falling apart and it is time to take business to real professionals who understand that something so simple like putting a smile on your face and even pretending to care is the easiest thing in the whole g*dd*mn world. PASSPORT ONLY REVIEW: Yeah, it expired, so without a passport my jet setting days of seducing exotic women while they attempt to assassinate me with lip-stick zip guns are on hold. And the process, notoriously, is a pain. After three failed photo acquisition attempts, I went into the USPS in a hail mary play. Incredibly, there's a separate line for passports. And it blew the glacially-paced main line (one star) out of the water. And not only did I get two passport photos (for an admittedly pricey $15), but the lady at the counter helped me go through my application, buy an envelope, pack everything up, and got me a money order because I didn't have my checkbook on me. And BAM--the passport was on its way with a tracking number. Look out, ladies--I'll have to get the shaken martini and gunpowder stains out of my white tux, cause I'll be back in action before you can say "your imagery is outdated and sexist." read more

I agree that the best advice is to arrive as close to opening as possible and avoid the lunch hour and and late afternoons. I found the staff to be friendly and efficient. What slowed things down were unprepared customers. More than half of the ten people in front of me did not have their packages labeled, taped and ready to mail out. If you want an efficient transaction and a fast-moving line, please have everything done in advance. The post office employee will not tape your box for you. They will not fill out the address label for you. And they will not allow you take up precious time by sitting at their counter while you complete the customs declaration form. Rather, they will have you step aside and assist someone else while you fill out the necessary labels/forms. Please, for your sake and those in line behind you, be prepared as best as possible. Was dismayed to discover my passport expired four weeks before my most recent trip abroad. Despite initial abject panic, a coworker recommended the passport office at the Union street post office. One trip over there and I was in the clear. The entire experience could not have been easier, and the women who works there was lovely, helpful, gracious and mindful of time. How often can you use service, ease of use and the federal government in the same sentence? I'm fairly certain I've never done it before. In and out in 20 minutes, with two people ahead of me. Three little words sum up why I keep using this particular Post Office branch: Automated Postal Center. That's APC, yo. Mostly, it's your average United States Post Office. The lines can be long and the service can be slow, though the postal workers always seem mostly friendly and well-meaning. A recent remodel of the main area of the building left it looking pretty much the same as before: basically clean but vaguely dingy. (I think they forgot to change the posters out.) The location is convenient, though, especially if you have occasion to be in downtown Seattle almost daily, as I do. And there's always the APC. The line could be going out the door, and very few have the inclination to use this machine, as it almost always sits empty, just waiting for me. Using it, I can weigh my package(s), print postage, get insurance or delivery confirmation...pretty much everything the postal worker would do, other than his gentle smile, of course. And I'm done in minutes, package posted and out the door, while the line I was looking at as I came in hasn't dwindled. Others may have different reasons for coming here...the inscrutable mysteries of humanity might yield some clues as to why. For me, it's simple: the location is convenient, and I gotta get back with my APC. Word. read more

Personally I enjoy this place. This is what a post office is supposed to look, feel, hear and smell like. Yes, the lines are always long. Yes, there's usually only one post office employee working the front desk that's angry about their job and yes I'm sure if you touched the counters you should probably sanitize. If someone expects it to be clean, the lines short and the people less grumpy then you haven't been to enough post offices. When I walk into any post office I expect a wait and to be there for a good 30 minutes just to do one simple task. I also find it amusing to watch the crack heads wander by or the armless and legless man panhandle for change and wonder how he got there. I think it's the ultimate place to people watch. So word of advice... don't visit this post office, any for that matter, if you are short on time or afraid of germs. read more

Gross. First, the entire counter service is CLOSED. They say it's "temporarily", but it's already 2 months passed their proposed reconstruction project timeline (lol the USPS). The only thing that's open is the self-service counter, which has extremely limited shipping options. Second, this place looks like it's infected with cancer. I do not often go to the Post Office. I never send mail because honestly I'm too forgetful most of the time, but I moved recently in with some roommates and found myself in need of a P.O. Box. I initially went online to reserve my P.O. Box. That process was rather easy. I was astonished though at the increase in cost for a box over what I had paid years earlier. Push came to shove though and I still needed the box. Upon reserving it I was told to go in to get keys. I did so just yesterday. The lady who helped me was efficient and direct. That's the best I can say. She got my keys and paperwork filled out quickly. She was not overly friendly, which surprised me as the place was empty so I knew she wasn't pressed to hurry. She also did not offer to show me where in the post office the box I was assigned is located, which has been my past experience. I still haven't gone and looked for it as I've been too busy. I cannot complain she did a bad job, but I still wont rate this place above 3stars. They know there stuff and are efficient, but not outstanding. read more

Horrific. Terrifying. Epic waste of time. You can come here to buy a stamp and spend an hour in line. For the month of January, I probably spent close to 5 hours of LIFE just standing in line. And another two hours standing at the counter. I don't even blame this on tax season, the people that work here are cuckcou for coco-puffs. I have to send a lot of things certified mail. I get a lot of attitude when it's several envelopes. They mis- scan the wrong envelopes and attach it to the wrong labels. They ring things up with the wrong price/wrong weights/wrong zip codes. I come here often people, so I'm telling you, this is not a one time thing. If you come here in the middle of the day, or any time in the afternoon really, expect to be here a while. Everytime I've been here, it's also been an unpleasant experience due to the people waiting in line. They smell terrible. They're on their cells. They're screaming at one another. They're screaming at the people working here. They're pushing one another. One lady kept 'accidentally bumping into my purse'. One man actually called 911, while I was waiting in line- told 911 dispatch that he was having a diabetic seizure and the people at the Post Office weren't doing anything. This was not true- he didn't want to stand in line anymore. Myself and others, heard him announce to the other vagrant that was with him that he was going to make this call- and he did. I left as the paramedics were pulling up. It's absolute mayhem and a zoo. The walls are rotting and it's always so goddamn hot in there. If hell were a real place, this post office and the Atlanta airport would be it. Together, those two entities could provide a perfect fiery setting for eternal damnation! read more

The employees at this particular post office are pretty much always rude, preoccupied, busy holding conversations with random friends who are in there visiting and not selling stamps/shipping packages/retrieving mail/whatever else it is people do at the post office. I once waited at this branch for 15 minutes while one gentleman held a side conversation about some personal matter at his counter, laughing and carrying on with some friend who just dropped in to say hi, and ignoring the fact that a line was steadily growing. I don't love spending time at the post office, and I am sure no one else does, either. I understand that sometimes you have to wait in line. I just shouldn't have to do it so you can talk about your last bad date with a friend while you're at work. When I finally did get helped, the employee who assisted me was rude the entire time, first accusing me of filling out the wrong form in an angry tone and then rolling her eyes at me, looking at it again and seeing that it was indeed the correct form for a package that size. So I was at this post office today to apply for a passport. I didn't really have to wait in a line or anything since the passports have a number system. Either way, the ladies who helped me out were super friendly. They were happy and cheerful and joking with the customer in front of me and with them. Best of all, I needed pictures taken and they showed me it to make sure I thought it was ok before printing it so I wouldn't be stuck with an awful one! I usually dread going to this Post Office, but still find myself here all the time. The line is frequently very long, but it usually takes less time than I'm expecting. I try to aim for off times (ie not lunch and not the end of the day when everyone is desperate to mail stuff overnight), which seems to help. But it's pretty unpredictable. During the holidays it is always a madhouse and I feel really bad for the employees. In fact, some of the employees should win Congressional Gold Medals since this place is a magnet for crazies and disgruntled people. They really put up with alot. But not all of the employees handle it the same. There are a few ladies that are a joy to behold. They are positive and chipper no matter what and don't make me feel silly for asking questions. Most of the employees are just OK though. Then there is this woman that I would avoid at all costs if possible. I will refrain from describing or naming her, but she must be the moodiest USPS employee ever. I've seen her range from perfectly pleasant to neutral to downright mean and nasty. She literally almost made me cry last Christmas!! I was trying to be as nice and polite as possible -- in hopes that it would either win her over or she'd eventually feel bad for being a horrible wench to me -- but no, she acted like I was the biggest idiot in the world and could barely stand to help me. My heart dropped when she was at the counter again this year, but like Jekyll & Hyde, this time she was professional and even gave me some useful info about postage. This is a large Post Office and you can get alot done here. There are passport services, lots of different boxes and shipping materials available, several tables to use, PO Boxes, General Delivery (limited hours, and not at the main counter), and an Automated Postage Center. Unlike other reviewers, I would not recommend using the passport service. There never seems to be anyone working in the office. I got my pics taken at Bartell and processed it through the mail, which is cheaper than doing it in person, FYI. I'm not a huge fan of the APC. You can only get ugly patriotic stamps, and if you have issues or questions you'll have to join the main line anyways. If you choose to use the APC machine for a package, take note that it will print out a large label that must have the address filled out by hand. So bring a pen that works on stickers and don't bother addressing the package beforehand. Also, I failed to figure out how to do more than one transaction at a time. So if you are mailing more than one item, you may have to do them each separately. Either I am completely incompetent or the APC system is not user friendly. Also, it is located by the front door, which is stupid since that area gets the most crowded. Being right in the heart of downtown, this Post Office is conveniently located and on many bus lines. The best advice I can give you is to try and arrive as close to opening as possible if you don't want to wait in huge lines. Whatever you're planning DO NOT get there between 11:30 and 1:30. You will wait in a good 20 - 30 minutes of lines to be helped. Around lunch time they generally only have 1 or 2 people working the counters and in the morning they have around 4 or 5... which doesn't make much sense. Everyone seems to come here on their lunch break but that is the time when there are the least amount of people available to help customers. read more

Wow...I recieved SO much attitude today at this post office. I've gotten over the fact the line there is ALWAYS long. I don't think it's possible to fix it...it's in a central location near tons of businesses and they can only have so many people on staff. I've had hit or miss experiences here. Some of the clerks are CRAZY nice and cheery. Today, however, I just got the meanest glare from the woman behind the counter. She had moved the woman she was helping to the side since she was filling out, and since I'm usually greated with attitude if I walk up to them before they say "NEXT!", I waited. I got this terrible glare as I made eye contact with the wolf behind the counter...."Can....I....HELP...you?!" So much attitude for just picking up stamps. Cool your jets, woman! The attitude was there the entire time, and she clearly didn't like that I was calling what I needed "booklets" instead of "sheets". Get over it, I don't know the handbook lingo! So...1 star because of my experience today, but a tossed on a 2nd star beacuse I don't always get so much sass. read more

UPDATE (2016): They've since moved this post office, or otherwise updated the address to a different location. Which renders many of these older reviews useless. (I assure you, I have never been to Mabton. I'm not even sure where that is.) A bit hit or miss. The good news is that they have an automated postage machine, so you can skip the line if you'd like. The problem with this, however, is that the machine only has a limited few options of postage types it can process. Both times I've mailed packages out of this post office, I had to navigate through the menu only to realize the option I needed to send was not listed as an option. Nice. Thanks for telling me in advance..? The location is kind of unusual, yeah. It's right in front of a busy bus stop, so you see a lot of unusual foot traffic during the day. But if that doesn't bother you, the post office itself is alright. I have yet to experience the horrible lines some of the other reviews mention. That being said, the customer service isn't super amazing, either. You see an odd thing happening here: customers arrive, confused at how to proceed. The clerk gives a brief, really quick run-down of what to do, leaving out a few details. The customer is confused, and stalls, which takes up more time. The clerk, however, is above hand-holding and guiding them step by step, so you see a lot of passive aggressive, snippy, annoyed exchanges because the clerk is frustrated that the confused customer doesn't fully understand the 'process'. Makes you wonder how efficient things would be if the clerk just told them everything they needed to know upfront, right? Today, the icing on the cake was the clerk asking *me* if my box was flat rate postage or not. Uh.. It's an official Priority Mail box, and I literally snagged it off the rack, so why don't you tell me? How am I supposed to know what kind of postage it uses? I figure this is a new kind of box for PM, but I have to wonder if the USPS just rolled it out without briefing their employees on how it works, or what. I still don't know if I was charged correctly for the postage, since I still don't know if it was supposed to be a flat rate or not. Oh well. But hey, as long as it arrives at its destination, whatever. So far, I've yet to have any problems on that end. read more

Wow - I think I must be going to a different post office than the one these other people are going to. I work downtown and have been going to this post office for years. I have always and consistently had amazing service at this post office. When I go in, even at the busiest times, even if there is a line to the door, it generally takes less than 10, maybe 15 min to get to the front. If the line is only half as long, it takes generally five minutes - tops, to get to the counter. I've waited far, far longer (half hour or more) for shorter lines, at other post office branches. All of the people working here are really nice and super efficient and quick. Just the other day I went in to mail a few hundred mailers out for my business. I had left the envelopes unstamped, thinking that they probably had one of those machines they could just run the envelopes through and print postage on them. I was really bummed to discover that they didn't and that I'd have to buy a whole ton of stamps and stick them on myself. The idea of doing that was just tiring (though I'm nearly 9 months preggo and the idea of doing nearly anything these days is frankly pretty tiring) and I had just decided to take the stamps back to my office and deal with it there when when the lady helping me (Helen - so nice!) said - "there's nobody else in line, let me help you stick those stamps on." I tried to decline, feeling like I would be keeping her from doing some other work, but she insisted and the two of us stood there and stuck stamps on envelopes for about ten minutes. She was SO awesome!!! That is just one example of the coolness of the people working here, but I have always had great folks at the counter. They have always been very friendly and helpful (and did I mention efficient?) and it makes having to take a trip to the post office so much more pleasant. As with other reviewers, I just experienced the "delivery attempted - business closed" notice for my package....at 2pm. So I figured that was odd, maybe they tried to deliver to the wrong business and they'd redeliver. The very next day...this time 11:30am..."delivery attempted - business closed". So I call the post office directly to inquire and all they could tell me is what I saw for myself on the tracking information. I was told to call back the next day and ask for someone specifically. I said that tomorrow is a Saturday and you're closed, so will I still be able to get through to the mailroom? "Oh yes, we're all here on Saturday there's just no walk-in service." Well guess what? I call the next day and the automated robo-voice tells me I need to call back during normal business hours. And this is all for a package that was supposed to be sent priority mail with 2 day delivery. If this is how they treat priority mail I can't imagine what happens with packages sent first class. My package was returned to sender and I was never even given the option to pick up at the post office itself, despite my repeated phone calls to try and intercept the package. Have yet to hear from any manager after I filed a formal complaint with the USPS. read more

No pens lying around and they charge you for a whole roll of tape even if you only use 2 strips of tape to begin with. I think its ridiculous that they charge you for a whole roll of tape when I'm just trying to send a SMALL package back home. The guy handed me the whole roll and charged me $3.49 for packing tape without telling me that I had to buy the whole thing...a complete rip off. I can't believe this place! Dirty, old, disorganized... really? This place draws a lot of homeless and bums. A lot of "pick-up" mail... sometimes there is a separate line, sometimes not. Even if there is, signs are so poor many people don't realize it. Sometimes there is a extra line for Express (one domestic item). Sometimes not. Took me several visits to realize this, because the sign, again, is a piece of paper on the counter, not visible from other side of the room. Today's visit was my last! I walk in, and there are 3 workers (and a "supervisor") working and only one person in line! He looked at me and grumbled about the wait. Well, the second he was at the counter, his life story began! Everything led to him telling other story (My birth date? Why I was born..., in... , and my father...). I heard about his marriage, kids, cars... Other two lines didn't move either, so my wait was ridiculous! When I left that crazy old idiot was still talking and the lady PO person still nodding away. And the line was now out into lobby, maybe 25 people! Why didn't the employee just gently move him on? Why did "supervisor" helping other worker step over and open another line? My only guess is they don't care... they don't give a damn if you stand in line for half an hour. All the same to them. People, if you really need to go to the USPS for any reason, I have good news. There is another location on 3rd, about 5 blocks down. Small, clean, friendly. You won't walk out feeling dirty. read more

Terrible post office location. I was unaware that this office was under construction, and so was every single person that walked into the building. There was some alarm going off, and the line was 45 minutes long. I made my husband stand in line while I dug out my pen from my purse to label and wrap my package. And I left him to stand while I shared my tape and pen with half the surprised people in the foyer. Very bizarre. I'm sure it will be an amazing post office when it's remodeled, but maybe they should add another station, or offer an employee to help move the line along and supply a little tape or a pen on a chain perhaps? I had to pick up stamps to mail out holiday cards for my company. The line was out to the door, but the line for the automatic box was also just as long, so I chose to see a real person. It was rush hour and they had 4 people behind the counter, so the line actually moved pretty quickly. They all seemed friendly and helpful. I was in and out in 15 minutes. If somebody couldn't complete their transaction, to, say, fill out their form correctly or put the ship to address on the box, the employee let them stand to the side, finish what they needed to do and cut back in line so they didn't have to wait again. read more

I hate going to this post office. Definitely understaffed despite its strategic location. Always a long line at anytime of the day. They have non-self-sealing USPS flat rate boxes on the lobby but didn't provide any tape. Pretty sure they used to have free USPS Priority/Express Mail tape. It's ridiculous! Definitely not a one stop for our shipping needs. The building itself seems to be very old and in need of rejuvenation. About 2 years ago they had a facelift but sadly, it's just the exterior. I come here a lot for work and each time I have something I have to get in line for I am prepared for the long line that is always here. I have worked at some pretty crappy customer service jobs so I feel for the employees though some can be a lot more helpful if they tried but I put most blame on how USPS setup and runs the place. A little more focus on customer service and different stations would make this place run so much more smoothly. read more

Although there is a long line, staff is nice and willing to answer your question when you are waiting. It is not a easy job. Some staff are old people and they have to stand there to work for a long time. Be patience to them. read more
