This Post Office has had its ups and downs over the years. Joe, who had been a manager for well over a decade, was great at running the place. I never heard one complaint about the guy. After Joe left, the place went on a downward streak. There's a clerk these days, Jamilah, who is fantastic. It's always nice to see her behind the counter. On a couple of occasions, when I had PO box-related business, I left when I did not see her there, knowing that she would be able to handle the situation quickly. read more

The Kalorama USPS facility is supposed to be open on Saturday mornings (0900-1200). But, golly gee, the employees of this branch didn't show up for work this Saturday morning! According to my letter carrier, this is a recurring phenomenon. This is indicative of the "dont give a hoot" attitude of the manager and employees assigned to this branch. They open your mail and do not close boxes properly,when you call for answer or email you never get an explanation as too what happened and who was responsible for the incident.When mail is damaged like the last letter is never scanned in informed delivery as if someone when in there and deleted the picture of the unauthorized open mail from the delivery system.Yesterday I found a letter from my from the credit bureau dirty and obviously opened with a letter opener ,the mail box was not open and it was securely locked.Is a federal violation to open mail ,specially from the credit bureaus why do Federal POst Office Employees think this is okay,I felt violated twice as I'm already experiencing identity theft which which why I receive a lot mail back and forth front he credit bureaus and other federal agencies and with the local post man opening letters with my SS and financial information is impossible to resolve things.I can not put m,y my mail on hold to protect it since the problem is internal.A lot federal violations that are internal and locally just because is DC does not mean people are exempt not to follow federal laws and regulations. read more

I was refused service by the only woman working at this post office today for no apparent reason - the exchange I had with her is funny and informative enough to be worth posting here, but I'm primarily doing it to remind you, dear reader, that there is a mechanism on the USPS website for filing formal customer service complaints, and USPS is required to respond. I don't know her name but I know from the receipt of a previous transaction this is clerk #05 at this location. She was also the only person working at the time of my complaint below. Between 1:05 and 1:10 PM today I went to this post office to mail a letter and a package. There were no customers in the post office and clerk #05 was the only person working and was at the counter, so I approached the counter with my items. She had her head down and did not acknowledge me, even when I was right in front of her, until I asked if I should put the first item on the scale. I then saw that she was busy texting. "You all think you're entitled" she then said. "You don't know what I was doing" after I pointed out that I could see her texting instead of acknowledging that i was in front of her waiting to be served. She continued berating me, now with her voice raised, for not waiting in line before approaching the counter, even though I was the only person there. Then she said "I refuse to serve you." I told her I planned to complain and she said "Go right ahead." So after taking my items to a different post office at some inconvenience, here is my complaint. Although the line is typically long and this location never seems to have enough counter staff, I will say that they are pleasant and much better than the location on Florida Ave. This location is open on Saturday which is a definite plus. The folks that work here now are a definite improvement from the mean ones that used to work this location. I just wish they would extend their hours of operation. read more

There is one man who works here who couldn't be nicer or more professional. He has helped me with challenging international mailings. Another woman here is incredibly rude. I had to mail five packages. She mistyped the names and addresses on at least three labels for customs forms. I asked her to redo as I was concerned that the packages could be misdirected. She refused and started shouting at me that my writing is illegible and I needed to return to first grade. In fact, the labels were pretty clear. I then had to escalate to refusing to pay for the mailing labels. At that point she basically threw my packages back at me and started yelling that she didn't care what I did with them. She then berated me for the next 5 minutes as I removed the labels myself. So if you get the nice guy Alvin you will have a very good USPS experience but could also be treated with total disrespect and offered incompetent service. read more

I've worked in shipping professionally in NoVa, DC, NYC and Sacramento, and these guys are a trip sometimes. Will add that my sister is a mail carrier for USPS, and is baffled when I describe some of things the desk clerks here have said to people I know. Have been using them for about 4 years to ship packages for my current employer & most times haven't had any problem myself. Not a single other co-worker of mine can say the same however. Somebody there is making up funny rules that go against USPS policy & they should probably stop. The most common ones are that they try to place limits on the number of packages they'll accept from a customer, and that they'll refuse to give a receipt for the shipments they accept. My employer relies heavily on USPS for a mail order business, and packages have gone missing in the past after being shipped. There are also scammers who create false tracking numbers, and even identical webpages to the USPS tracking page, that will say a shipment arrived at its destination - so one can see the importance of having some kind of backup in case a shipment goes missing. As stated, I haven't had any problems here, but am just getting a little tired of hearing about it from everybody else. read more

Ugh, zero stars if I could Kalorama USPS. This is the worst post office I've ever been to in terms of attitude. Every time I've come here in the last 3 years the staff act as if it's painful to mail my stuff & sell me stamps, excruciating to answer my basic questions, and hard to even look at me. If you make it to the front of the line without a form you need, they act like you stabbed a kitten - sorry, it's not intuitive and the forms are tucked away without any signage, could they not just tell me how to do it properly without all the disrespect? If you ask a question they sigh, roll their eyes and glare over your shoulder for awhile like they need some time to handle that you're actually speaking to them. The only person who ever helped me politely here was a postal worker I recognized from a different DC post office - not the regular staff. I once saw a guy, obviously new to the area, wait 30+ minutes in line with a missed package slip only to be told by the postal workers "We don't have that here. Nope." twice in a row, no additional info or suggestions. Had I known then that packages in my zip code go to the T St. post office, I would have suggested he try there. That's my suggestion to everyone in the greater admo-columbia-14th St area. Go to T Street, the lines are long but super nice people work there who will try to help you and there are big windows so you can people watch while you wait. The one on Florida above Dupont Circle is also fine - I've been there once, the staff were nice. read more

It should come as no surprise that USPS is on the verge of bankruptcy. One person behind the counter. Doesn't even acknowledge you when it's your turn. Glares (yes literally glares at you with a look of disdain) when you ask a simple question. Mine was if they had any forever stamps in rolls left. I already had postage on a priority flat rate box I was mailing out. When I approached the counter, I told the clerk I put postage on it and pointed to the spot. She then weighed the box. She printed a post office label for the amount of the postage, was about to tape it on the box, then sighed heavily because the box already had postage on it. (another glare at me even though I pointed it out when I arrived). No thank you, no good bye, just "next" to the next customer in line. I am giving one star mainly because of the rude older male that always seems to be there. I would give NO stars if I could. Perhaps he's burnt out on working a customer service job, which I get because I did it for years, but that's no reason to be rude to someone who isn't rude to you. He also doesn't seem to know how to use the computer to print out a postage sticker, as they do in every OTHER post office I've been to--he made me stick over $5 worth of stamps on a priority mail package! When I told him that in other post offices the associates printed the postage out on the computer, he said, "I've been doing this for forty years, which is longer than you've been alive. So I know what I'm doing." Not one to take such attitude, I said, "at least when it comes to stamps, not computers." He just glared at me. If I hadn't need to mail the package THAT DAY, I would have politely told him what he could do with the stamps. On another visit, a lady was having a problem with the door, which has ALWAYS been hard to open ever since I've been going there for the past several years. From the inside of the post office, she asked if something was wrong with the door. He said, "what's wrong is that you're on the wrong side of it." I get that postal employees can get away with murder (used to be literally they could!), but does he need to be SO rude? I hope this nasty, unknowledgeable dinosaur retires soon. I'd rather have my tax money going to his fat postal pension than his salary. I only go here if I'm in a hurry. Otherwise, I go to the Pennsylvania Avenue NW post office near work, or the Florida Avenue NW post office in Dupont Circle. This is the worst post office in dc. The unhappy man behind the counter was smug and rude to my girlfriend and I trying to mail out a package. Granted we don't mail packages that often, he didn't have to be a dick about it: "This is wrong - the "To" goes on the top left hand side and the "From" goes on the bottom right hand side. I need a passport, and called the usps number, and they gave me the one for Connecticut Ave NW DC. The line is busy, like all the phone numbers for the D.C. Post offices. I go there in person. Went yesterday to pick up the mail for the 501c3 I work with and I can understand the frustration of fellow reviewers. The place is meh, not clean but not dirty. For a place to pickup mail bi-weekly it is somewhat difficult to do working outside the City. Just like a bank, hours are not convenient for working individuals. I've made it a priority to get up on Saturday mornings and pickup the mail before it closes at noon. I can't speak toward the customer service but I do know that it's supposed to open at 9AM on weekdays and oftentimes I see lines still waiting to get in at 9:10 read more

This post office is comically bad. They are impervious to common sense and refrain from common courtesy in all forms. Have never been in there without getting the feeling that I was burdening the staff. If they put in self service machines for packages (as they should), people would undoubtedly wait in line for those rather than interact with the staff. The person who currently manages this place is very competent and salt of the earth. We're a non profit that has a business po box at this location. We had issues with the previous manager, who was kinda bitter and a bit ornery. It's understandable given the customers who come in here are often mean, high maintenance, and disrespect the staff. The current management and staff do everything possible to be helpful and the person in charge sets a gracious and helpful customer service tone that has led to significant improvements. read more

Especially if you ask for something that involves a little more labor on their part such as sending a package overseas, this place is a big no-no. I am shocked at the ratings on this post office. I've even had discussions with colleagues about it (as I often go here because I work so nearby). Here is the thing--there is a guy who works there...left-handed...very sarcastic. I think this intimidates folks--but if you don't let it bother you and actually engage...you'll find that he's not really being rude--but being playful. He's funny to me. But beyond that--he is probably one of the most helpful USPS people I have ever encountered. Very knowledgeable and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS helps me to find a more efficient way to ship my packages. I say this because I spend tons of money shipping packages and other sorts of mailings to my fiance in the UK...I think one time I was trying to ship something Express...which would have amounted to nearly a hundred bucks and he had advised me that priority international would get it there just as fast--if not faster. He was right. Anytime I visit this post office, I always end up walking out feeling confident that my packages are left in good hands. The guy who is normally in there on weekdays is always super-knowledgable and I can always count on him to offer up some cost-saving alternatives if any are available. I don't know any other USPS in the city with staff who will do that. I think most people who come to this post office need to lighten up a bit (as I've advised some of my colleagues). It's by no means a 'stuffy" post office. Sometimes you'll walk in and even hear some old school tunes playing on the radio. If I was to advise folks on how to navigate this USPS, I'd say, smile and banter back--you'll realize the staff aren't as "attitude-y" as one might think. :-) read more

When I went to the post office at 12.35pm today, I found a sign on the locked door saying "Closed -- Back At 1.25." A delivery man happened to be out front emptying the boxes, and he told me that this branch closes for an hour to go get lunch (and asked me to call and report it -- which I intend to do). When I went back an hour later to mail my package, the worker nonchalantly confirmed that she had indeed gone to lunch. Now, given USG employment regs, it's not her responsibility to NOT take a lunch break -- but this is the first time I've ever encountered a USPS location that just flat-out locked the doors for this reason. read more

One of the slowest post offices that I've been to. I went on a Saturday morning and was second in line with one person being helped at the counter. It was easily a 15 minute wait. In the past, I have waited over 20 minutes to be helped in similar circumstances. I think this place is seriously understaffed. This is an odd, quirky post office. The bald older clerk who seems to be the main person is pretty gruff, but after I was going there for a while he was nice enough. He seems to be nice to the regulars. But I'd like to tell you about a woman who works there who is now the poster woman for all that is wrong with the US Postal Service and customer service in general. Her name is either Ms. Kazee or Kazzee or Keeza... or something like that. She was by far the rudest person I've ever met working at a place like this, and that's saying something. I asked her a very simple question: What's the maximum size of an envelope that you can put in a box on the street instead of coming into the post office (due to post-9/11 anthrax security measures). She first told me to go outside and look it up myself. Excuse me? Then she smirked and told me, "One ounce." I said, "Wait, that can't be right." At which point she crossed her arms, turned her back to me and started talking to someone else. This went on like this. She was ridiculously rude. I asked her name to report it and she turned to me, leaned forward and said, "It's right here. Ms. Kazee. K-A-Z-E-E." Or maybe she said Kazzee, or Keeza, or something. I was so angry at that point I couldn't even believe it.) But I was also proud. Instead of letting my anger get the best of me, I just said, "You know what ma'am? You'd have a lot better day if you just got up in the morning and decided to." I walked out thinking, you know why people give horrible service like this? Because they know there's nothing you can do about it. I was thinking this woman is probably in her 50s, she's already got her pension vested... even IF there were anyone at the post office who would ever listen, she's got her pension. You and I will be paying her salary and her retirement for a long time. But I thought, at least I can put it up on Yelp! read more

I have a feeling that "Matt S" was a fake reviewer. Believe the reviewers who wrote before him. This was my worst experience at a post office in any city. It's one thing to deal with people who are blunt or loud. It's another thing to be stared at when you're clearly struggling and in need of basic assistance. Perhaps I'm an idiot for thinking that a post office would actually have a PEN somewhere. I was running errands and came in to fill out a simple form, so I didn't have one on me. The older "gentleman" working the weekend shift just handed me the envelope and then said: "NEXT." I checked one table for a pen. I went over to the bar where I thought there'd be a pen attached. I then went over to a few other tables. I walked around the small little office. The old guy was staring angrily at me the other time, not really paying attention to the customer he was supposed to be "assisting." I overheard someone else being given a three-word summary of what to do. With so many people looking for jobs, someone either needs to come in and manage these fools properly or the entire branch should be replaced. I can't come in during the week because of work. I'll now have to just pay the fee to fill it out online. Save yourself the trouble and go over to U Street or one of the other branches. read more
